. VVe have to announce with much regret the death , at the age of 48 , of Bro . Major Henry Stephens , at his residence at Park . Bro . Stephens was a P . M . of the Cosmopolitan Lodge , No 917 , and also held office in Nos . iSC and 1 S 0 , besides being a member of the High Cross Lodge . The funeral will take place at Tottenham Cemetery , to-morrow ( Saturday ) , at 4 o'clock .

specimens of Elizabethan architecture in England , having been built in the year 159 -5 by Sir Edward Culpeper , is of grey stone , with line mullioned windows and dormers , with enriched crocheted gables and pinnacles , and stands in a beautifully timbered park , with a long carriage drive approach . Lady Octavia Shaw Stewart of Ardgowan presided . After some
preliminary conversation , and reports having been submitted showing that considerable progress had been made in Renfrewshire in the promotion of the bazaar , it was resolved to appoint lady conveners for each district of the county . It is understood that these conveners will take entire charge of their respective districts . A meeting of the Gentlemen ' s

The report showed that the income last year vvas £ 49 65 , the expenditure being £ 5134 , there being , therefore , a deficit of £ 169- The sum actuall y disbursed in relief to necessitous Scotchmen had been £ 4123 .

The French Exhibition at West Brompton is announced to be opened by the Lord Mayor early this month . An influential Reception Committee has been formed , with Col . North as Chairman , and there is no reason to doubt that this the third of the National exhibitions held in the same premises , under the same able management , will be equally
successful as the preceding Italian and American Exhibitions . As an appropriate feature in the life picture of Africa , which will be illustrated in the Arena section , Englishmen will have an opportunity of seeing the great sensation ot Paris , viz ., lions driven by their proprietor in a Roman chariot .
In his oration as Provincial Grand Chaplain at the consecration of Lodge Alva , St . Servanus , No . 771 , Bro . the Rev . VV . E . Hall said that if we wish to find a practical answer to the inquiry—What is the good of Freemasonry ? we shall find it in ourselves . What good are we working in it ? Are we getting the greatest good we can out of it by giving up ourselves to its rules , to its precepts , and to every
opportunity of usefulness for good which it sets before us to acquire ? Freemasonry is good , though it has suffered much discredit by the unworthiness of many of its members . Let us take care that our venerable Institution , which is so worthy , " be not evil spoken of" through our own personal unworthiness , or our carelessness in neglecting strictly to guard its privileges .

The will ot the late Bro . Alderman Stone , dated December 30 th , 1 SS 7 , has now been lodged at the offices of the Probate Coun . He is described as of Bucklersbury , and of Castleham , Hollington , in the county of Sussex , an Alderman of the City of London , and treasurer of St . Thomas ' s Hospital . After bequeathing an immediate pecuniary legacy of £ 500 to Mrs . Stone , and legacies to
his executors , also to two godsons , he leaves to Mrs . Stone absolutely all his furniture , and other effects . The income of the residue of the deceased ' s estate is also directed to be paid to Mrs . Stone for life , subject to an annuity in favour of the testator ' s daughter-in-law , Mrs . Palmer Stone , and her children . There are ultimate trusts in favour of the testator ' s daughter-in-law and her children , but subject to the life interest bequeathed to the testator's widow . The
Alderman died on February 26 th last possessed of freeholds in the City ot London and in Kent and Middlesex , also of certain freeholds at Hastings and of the mansion house at Hollington , erected by him a few years since , known as Castleham , with the lands originally held therewith , and otheis which a few years since were purchased by the deceased . The gross value of the personalty has been sworn at a little over £ 30 , 800 .

Clement , Eastcheap . Bro . the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress , and Bro . Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., were among Lady Knutsford's visitors at her reception on Saturday evening , at her residence in Eaton-square .

On Thursday afternoon some interesting experiments took place in the Thames , near Waterloo Bridge , for the trial of a new life-saving apparatus , the Combinare Buoyant Cushion , in the presence of representatives from the Admiralty and the Board of Trade . The experiments appeared successful .
The Scottish Corporation , a charity of which the Prince of VVales is President , held its annual meeting on VVednesday at Scots' Hall , Fleet-street . In all 19 pensioners were elected , viz ., two to the £ 25 pension and 17 to the £ 12 pension . The report showed that the income last year vvas £ 49 65 , the expenditure being £ 5134 , there being , therefore , a deficit of £ 169- The sum actuall y disbursed in relief to necessitous Scotchmen had been £ 4123 .
Some remarkable prices were realised on Wednesday at the sale of the library of the late Mr . Thomas Gaisford , of Offington , Worthing . The Guinta edition of the " Decameron , " bound by Le Facheux , fetched £ 64 ; the rare first edition , Kilmarnock , 17 S 6 , of " Burns ' s Poems , " in the Scottish dialect , £ 120 ; a collection of 40 black-letter ballads , printed in the reign of Charles II ., in one volume , folio , £ 32 ; and " Aria ? Montani Dictum , " from the library of Diane de Poictiers , £ 94 ios .
The French Exhibition at West Brompton is announced to be opened by the Lord Mayor early this month . An influential Reception Committee has been formed , with Col . North as Chairman , and there is no reason to doubt that this the third of the National exhibitions held in the same premises , under the same able management , will be equally
successful as the preceding Italian and American Exhibitions . As an appropriate feature in the life picture of Africa , which will be illustrated in the Arena section , Englishmen will have an opportunity of seeing the great sensation ot Paris , viz ., lions driven by their proprietor in a Roman chariot .
In his oration as Provincial Grand Chaplain at the consecration of Lodge Alva , St . Servanus , No . 771 , Bro . the Rev . VV . E . Hall said that if we wish to find a practical answer to the inquiry—What is the good of Freemasonry ? we shall find it in ourselves . What good are we working in it ? Are we getting the greatest good we can out of it by giving up ourselves to its rules , to its precepts , and to every
opportunity of usefulness for good which it sets before us to acquire ? Freemasonry is good , though it has suffered much discredit by the unworthiness of many of its members . Let us take care that our venerable Institution , which is so worthy , " be not evil spoken of" through our own personal unworthiness , or our carelessness in neglecting strictly to guard its privileges .

The will ot the late Bro . Alderman Stone , dated December 30 th , 1 SS 7 , has now been lodged at the offices of the Probate Coun . He is described as of Bucklersbury , and of Castleham , Hollington , in the county of Sussex , an Alderman of the City of London , and treasurer of St . Thomas ' s Hospital . After bequeathing an immediate pecuniary legacy of £ 500 to Mrs . Stone , and legacies to
his executors , also to two godsons , he leaves to Mrs . Stone absolutely all his furniture , and other effects . The income of the residue of the deceased ' s estate is also directed to be paid to Mrs . Stone for life , subject to an annuity in favour of the testator ' s daughter-in-law , Mrs . Palmer Stone , and her children . There are ultimate trusts in favour of the testator ' s daughter-in-law and her children , but subject to the life interest bequeathed to the testator's widow . The
Alderman died on February 26 th last possessed of freeholds in the City ot London and in Kent and Middlesex , also of certain freeholds at Hastings and of the mansion house at Hollington , erected by him a few years since , known as Castleham , with the lands originally held therewith , and otheis which a few years since were purchased by the deceased . The gross value of the personalty has been sworn at a little over £ 30 , 800 .

The Duchess of Teck opened a bazaar and Italian market at the Riding School , Knightsbridge , on Wednesday afternoon , in aid of the Orphanage of Mercy at Kilburn .
At a sale , on Tuesday last , held at the Albert Hall , on behalf of the Society for Promoting Female Welfare , an organ recital was given by Dr . C . VV . Pearce , organist of St . Clement , Eastcheap . Bro . the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress , and Bro . Alderman Sir R . N . Fowler , Bart ., M . P ., were among Lady Knutsford's visitors at her reception on Saturday evening , at her residence in Eaton-square .
We learn with much pleasure that the City solicitor , Bro . H . H . Crawford , expects to resume his official duties on Monday , although the weather of the past week or ten days has somewhat retarded his progress towards complete recovery .
Saturday , the 10 th inst ., has been appointed for the private view of the summer exhibition ( the 21 st ) of the 19 th Century Art Society , at the Conduit-street Galleries , and the exhibition will open to the public on Monday , the 12 th .
Among the promises of support received hy the National Rifle Association , in reply to the appeal for financial assistance recently made , are £ 1000 by the South-Western Railway Company , £ 500 each by the Duke of Westminster , the Duke of Bedford , the Earl of Wemyss , and Lord Wantage , and £ 250 by Sir Edward Guinness .
Owing to the late date at which the order was given for the annexe in which the musical instruments , & c , are to be displayed at the Royal Military Exhibition , it is feared that it will hardly be ready to receive the interesting exhibits from the Brussels Conservatoire and elsewhere on the opening day . A full catalogue has , however , been completed .
The Rev . A . Hamilton Baynes , Domestic Chaplain to the Archbishop of Canterbury , will preach at the afternoon service in Westminster Abbey ( 3 p . m . ) on Ascension Day , and the collection will be given to the Incorporated Church Building Society . At a meeting of the Court of Common Council on Thursday , in the Guildhall , a letter was read from the engineer of the lower Bridge works , in which it was stated that the approaches on both sides of the river would be finished this year , and judging from the opinions of Sir VV . Arrol and other gentlemen interested in the works , the bridge would in all probability be open for traffic by July , 1891 .
A special meeting of the Alexandria and Bonhill , No . 321 , Royal Arch Lodge ( S . C ) , was held on the 25 th ult ., when a musical and literary entertainment vvas given by the brethren , all of whom acquitted themselves most creditably . The object was to raise a sum for the Benevolent Fund of the lodo-e . Bro . VV . E . Gilmour , R . W .
