The lodge was opened , and the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . Bro . George Lawrence was passed , and the by-laws read . Two distressed brethren were relieved , and the sum of £ 2 ios . was voted

to Bro . Binckes Pension Indemnit y Fund . Several gentlemen were proposed for initiation at the next meeting . The votes of the brethren were requested on behalf of Annie Wilson , who is now a last application . After " Hearty good wishes , " the lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to dinner in an adjoining room . The usual Royal and Grand Lodge toasts followed , and

were received heartily . The W . M ., Bro . Davies , then gave " The Visitors , " according them a hearty welcome , adding that , although they might think the banquet of not so sumptuous a kind as usual , that had nothing to do with the welcome and heartiness always evinced to them by the lodge , coupling the names ( of Bros . Dixon , Dehane , and Sanderson with the toast .

Bro . Dixon said it was his first visit , and was heartily pleased , and felt that he was no stranger amongst them . Bro . Dehane complimented the W . M . on the excellent working of the ceremony so abl y performed that evening , but especially as to the musical arrangements , which had added so much to the impressiveness of the evening . The esteem with which the W . M . was held by thebrethren must

be deeply gratifying to him , and encourage him to keep up the prestige of the lodge as his predecessors had done . But as to perfectness of ritual , the W . M . could not be excelled , and hoped that on his leaving the chair he would en ) oy not only the esteem , but the friendship of his brethren for many years . Bro . Dehane concluded by thanking them for their hospitality . _ _ Bro . Saunderson also returned thanks in a few words for

his hearty reception . Bro . Goddard was also called upon to reply , and said that friendship and brotherly feeling among the brethren was a jewe Iworthy to be worn and treasured . The Immediate Past Master , in proposing "The Health of the W . M ., " said he could only repeat that which he had said on former occasions , that Bro . John Davies was as able ¦ a Master as the lodge had ever possessed , which was saying

a good deal , considering they had their centenary warrant , and so many W . M . 's had preceded him . After this toast the Charity box , in accordance with old custom , was passed round , and realised a goodly sum . The Worshipful Master thanked the I . P . M . and brethren for the hearty manner they had responded to the toast , and was pleased that his ruling and working gave them

satisfaction . To equal his predecessor was an honour , but to surpass him was impossible . But as far as lay in his power he would do his best to carry out the duties in a proper and efficient manner , and endeavour to merit their esteem . The W . M . was greeted with great applause . In giving the next toast , " The Past Masters , " the W . M . said there were many of the most distinguished P . M . 's in

the Craft among them , and he was glad to have their assistance ; in fact , they were the backbone of the lodge , always ready to advise , admonish , coach , and render any service they might be called upon to do . Bro . fackson , the J . P . M ., replied briefly , and Bro . Bolton ( as a veteran of the lodge 40 years , and had onlv been absent about 10 times during- that period ) thought

a younger P . M . should have been called upon , but said that the P . M . 's reflected wonderfully on the brotherly feeling in the lodge , as it was not often , for many and various reasons , P . M . ' s remained long years after passing the chair , as was the case in the Temperance Lodge , and being at all times ready to perform any duty , from the chair down , at any time when called upon .

"The Officers' toast was responded toby the S . W ., who remarked that they always had good officers , and had three P . M . ' s among them at the present time , all anxious by merit to arrive at the chair which was soon so ably filled . The evening ' s enjoyment was considerably enhanced ^ by either singing or reciting by Bros . Jackson , Moore , Vint , Dale , and Cruttenden . The Organist presided at the

piano . Friars Lodge ( No . 1349 ) . —This lodge held its meeting on Monday , the 21 st ult ., at the Ship and Turtle , Leadenhall-street , E . C , the occasion being the installation of Bro . Ben . Da Costa into the chair of K . S .

The ceremony was performed by Bro . Harry Marks , P . M ., in his own inimitable way ; indeed , it would be difficult to imagine this indefatigable worker doing anything connected with Masonic ritual badly . There was a very numerous attendance of the brethren at the opening ceremony , which was the first item on the agenda , and their number was considerably augmented by a large influx of visitors ,

marking at one and the same time the extreme popularity of the " Friars " gathering , and more especially that of the W . M . elect , Bro . Ben . Da Costa . Among the members present were Bros . L . A . Da Costa , W . M . ; W . Musto , P . M ., Treas . ; R . Durell , P . M . ; E . S . Friedeberg , P . M ., Sec . ; J . De Casseres , J . W . ; C . N . Fox , S . D . ; and about 45 others . After the installation , and appointment and

investiture of officers , the W . M . worked thc ceremony of initiation in a manner which fully justified the lodge in their selection of such an excellent Mason as the Master for the ensuing year . Indeed , it augurs well for the future prosperity of this lodge , and the brethren may certainly look forward to a year of unalloyed pleasure with such a Master in the chair .

A banquet was afterwards provided , about 70 sitting down to enjoy an excellent repast . After the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , " The Health of the W . M . " was drunk in a very enthusiastic manner . The toast of "The Initiate" was given by Bro . W . Musto , P . M ., in his usual vigorous style , and the duty of proposing "The Health of the Immediate Past Master ,

and of the Installing Master , falling , by command of the W . M ., on Bro . Friedeberg , P . M ., that brother dwelt on the able services rendered by the I . P . M . during the past year , and he also paid a just tribute to the very excellent rendering of the installation ceremony by Bro . Harry Marks , P . M . The Worshipful Master then proposed , in very felicitous

terms , the toast of "The Visitors , and in his happiest vein spoke of the pleasure always experienced by the Friars Lodge in entertaining brethren of other lodges , and more especially such well-known and respected members of the Craft as Bros . Pierpoint , Sam . Wilkinson , Topping , Geo . Gardner , Wallis , Jacobs , and a host of others , to the number of about 30 .

In responding for the toast of " The Officers , " Bro . De Casseres , S . W ., spoke in a very vigorous manner , and feelingly alluded to the great pleasure it would afford him to serve under such an excellent Master as Bro . Ben . Da Costa . Some excellent singing was provided during the evening , and the proceedings were brought to a close by the whole lodge singing the National Anthem .

Lombardian Lodge ( No . 2348 ) . —An emergency meeting of this lodge was held on VVednesday , the 23 rd ult ., at the Ship and Turtle , Leadenhall-street , E . G ., there being present Bros . S . J . Attenborough , W . M . ; R . T . Bowman , P . M ., S . W . ; R . C . F . La Feuillade , P . M ., Hon . Sec . ; W . G . Lowe , S . D . ; H . S . Selling , J . D . ; R . J . Tyler , D . C . ; VV . F . Grimmett , P . M ., Steward ; G .

J . Hanson , H . J . Kimbell , G . Roberts , C . A . C . Kerspn , D . J . Clears , J . J . Raper , A . M . Raper , and A . Hone . Visitors : Bros . J . W . Dickinson , 913 ; Palmieri , and Walter , P . M . S 65 . The lodge was opened by the W . M ., and Messrs . E . VV . Hone , H . J . Kimbell , jun ., W . Knapp , and G . A . Paul were initiated . A draft of the by-laws was read , and , after

discussion , they were approved and passed . This concluded the business , and the lodge having been closed , the brethren adjourned to a sumptuous banquet . In the intervals between the customary toasts Bros . Palmieri , Grummett , Roberts , Lowe , Kerson , Dickinson , Selling , A . Hone , La Feuillade , and S . J . Attenborough contributed some excellent singing , & c .

M . and brethren for the hearty manner they had responded to the toast , and was pleased that his ruling and working gave them

satisfaction .
