THE UNEMPLOYED IN EAST LONDON . —At a time when much thought is being given to this matter , a practical suggestion may be of service . Last year more than ^ 300 , 000 worth of foreign matches were purchased by inconsiderate consumers in this country , to the great injury

ot our own working people , . so true is it that " evil is wrought by want of thought , as . well as want of heart . " If all consumers would purchase Bryant and May ' s Matches , that firm would be enabled to pay £ 1000 a week more in wages . —ADVT , -.. - .

The Pans Academic de Medecine has been investigating the effects of absinthe upon the health of habitual consumers , and has come to the conclusion that the terrible results so often observed are due , in reality , to the small proportion of absolute absinthe contained in the "liqueur verte . " In fact , if a bottle of absinthe was all absinthe it would be rather less harmful than milk and water . 'Twas ever thus—not the punch , but the turtle ; not the sherry , hut the salmon and cucumber . i
