A recherche repast was enjoyed at v reemasons Tavern , and the usual toasts vvere subsequently duly honoured . Bro . F . A . Philbrick , Q . C , G . Reg ., responding for "The Grand Officers , " said it vvas repeating an old phrase to say that , for the toast so kindly proposed and so warmly welcomed , the Grand Officers returned sincere thanks . It vvas to them a very great satisfaction
to be present at the installation ceremony of one of the most ancient lodges of the Craft . They had no politics in the party sense of the term in Freemasonry , but they vvere the most conservative people in the world , because they kept to their old traditions , and they were the most democratic Institution , because they turned their king out at the end of a year and put a new one in , and showed
their loyalty by exclaiming vive le roi . The W . M . had alluded in touching terms to the times they had lately passed through , and were still passing through . Honoured names in the Craft had fallen before that which vvas the common lot of humanity , but , thank God , they could still keep amongst them those whom the W . M . had mentioned , and those to whom the Craft owed so much . The name of Lord
Lathom vvas a household word in Freemasonry , and those who vvere privileged to be present and hear the address of the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe in Grand Lodge must have felt that no body had expressed its sense of the terrible loss which they as a . nation sustained , and its condolence with those afflicted in high places , in more expressive or in a more becoming- manner than the United Grand Lodge of
England . ^ The rest of the Grand Officers vvere always well received in assemblages of brethren , and it was always a pleasure to be amongst those who worked the ceremonies of their Craft in a manner which redounded to their honour , and in a lodge which had in the past attained the foremost rank of prosperity and success . It vvas not always that anti quity had a dry root , and he vvas glad to see that at the

This sign of life ( not of horror ) they felt was a very great thing in a lod ge vvhich had such claims to anticiuitv and such claims

He hoped the lod ge vyould continue to go on and prosper , and he vvas ^ pressing the hope of the Grand Officers when he wished mat this lodge would prosper exceedingly . They felt in placing Bro . Welcome as W . M . the cosmopolitan character u » 1 ' reemasonry , and knowing no distinction of country or creed , they all met there on terms of that brotherhood
which had made Masonry a great Institution in the past and would ensure its perpetuity in the future . Uro . Dr . S . R . Lovett , I . P . Bro . Dr . S . R . Lovett , LP . M ., thanked the W . AL before proceeding expressed his deep regret to announce officially the severe loss the Craft has sustained by the decease of H . R . H . the Duke of Clarence , P . G . AI . of Berkshire , the eldest son of the M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the
Prince of Wales , which melancholy event had cast a gloom over the whole country , as well as amongst the Craft . He therefore asked permission of the brethren to place upon the minutes a resolution to the following effect : " That this lodge desire to express to H . R . H . the M . W . G . decease of his eldest son , H . R . H . the Duke of Clarence , P . G . W ., and P . G . AI . trial , " vvhich the brethren in solemn silence endorsed , lt was also resolved that a vote of condolence and sympathy be passed with the widow and family of the late Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , G . Sec , feeling that by his decease the Craft had sustained a loss , vvhich , though not irreparable , vvas still of great importance to the brethren at large , the late Grand Secretary having been taken away in the full
tide of his usefulness and prosperity as a Freemason , after having secured the goodwill and respect of the brethren in every rank of the Craft . The S . W ., Bro . It . F . appreciation they had shown of his services . The balancesheet vvas read , and proved of a most satisfactory nature . In addition to leaving a considerable balance to his successor in the general fund of the lodge , the Benevolent Fund showed a very considerable amount . Later in the evening the fund vvas referred to by the Secretary , Bro . E . Blinkhorn , P . AL , vvith pardonable pride , he having been mainly instrumental in bringing" it into existence .
'The business being ended , the brethren adjourned to a banquet , which reflected credit on the manager of the hotel , Bro . Palmer . The usual toasts vvere given by the VV . The Kingswood Lodge , of vvhich he vvas the W . AL , was one of several vigorous offshoots of the Islington Lodge , and they felt interest in the welfare of the parent lodge . Bro . W . He would do his utmost to make the working of the lodge as near perfection as possible , and he knew that he had a loyal body of Past Alasters and officers to assist him in carrying out his duties . The Worshipful Alaster proposed " The Health of the
I . P . M ., " whom he had much pleasure in presenting with a Past Master ' s jewel voted to him by the brethren as a mark of respect ; and also "The Health of the Installing Master , " who had so ably performed the ceremony that evening . The LP . AL , Bro . J . H . Aleyer , in thanking the brethren for the jewel , and the W . cash balance in hand than any P . AL of the lodge had done before him . He would do all he could for the lodge , and , although he could not return thanks in the beautiful English which the Installing Alaster would shortly employ , his heart was true to Freemasonry , and he took the opportunity of thanking Bro . Alclntyre North for undertaking the duties he could not do as W . M . during the past year , and also for installing his successor that evening .
Ihe Installing Master , Bro . C . N . Alclntyre North , thanking the brethren with a humorous reference to and illustration of beautiful English , said that , to descend from the sublime to the ridiculous , he must thank in the ordinary vernacular _ . the LP . AL for his flattering allusion to his services during the past year , and return the compliment by thanking the LP . AL for the opportunity he had enjoyed of occupying that dear old chair for another year . Actinir as
W . AL at the last lodge meeting , it had b .-en his melancholy duty to express from the chair the heartfelt sympathy of his brethren with the M . W . G . M . in his bereavement , and also to allude to the death ot the dearest and truest friend man ever had—his old friend Duncan Cumming— who had many a time occupied that chair when it belonged tothe old club , and they could quite understand that the old char was not only endeared to him ( the Installing Alaster ) by the
reminiscences of five-and-thirty years , but was hallowed by thememi . ry ot many dear friends , who alter occupying that chair had gone before to their last home . Again he nad to thank the LP . AL for the opportunity of installing the W . AL Bro . Faulkner and himself had worked up to and passed the minor oilices , and the able and well-known manner in vvhich he discharged his duties would leave the Past Masters very little to do during his year of office . It
was with feelings of particular pride and gratification that he ( Bro . North ) vvas able that evening to complete what had been practically two years of oilice , and during which time he had installed his two im nediate successors . Standing now as one of the Past Alasters he could assure the younger brethren that if they had the love of Alasonry at heart they would lind that every year of office would increase
their knowledge of the usefulness of the Order , and if when weary unto death vvith tne strite of this world they came to the lodge , the beautiful ceremonies would make them forget their troubles , and they would return refreshed to their daily avocations better men , better soldiers 111 thc good cause , and with renewed courage to lace trie dangers and difficulties of their mundane existence . The Worshipful Alaster proposed " The Health of the
I . P . The LP . AL , Bro . J . H . Aleyer , in thanking the brethren for the jewel , and the W .
