In the course oi his speech the W . Fund" to assist the poor folks during the present influenza epidemic which had been most severe in Dunmow and the villages around . This vvas received vvith much applause . " The Prov . Grand Officers " was responded to by Bro . Snell , who thanked the W . AL for his remarks referring to the Prov . Grand Officers willingness at all times to do vvhat they could to advance Freemasonry in the province

whenever called upon . The LP . AL , in proposing the toast of "The Worshipful Master , " said he vvas a good Alason , and that whatever he took in hand he did well . The VVorshi p ful Alaster , ii responding for himself and his ofiicers , said with their help he hoped to havc a good year of office , and as there would be two initiates next time , he hoped they would deserve all the good things that had

been said about them and reflect credit on the lodge , but he depended on the Past Alasters to keep them right , as they had not the advantages which would be attained if they had a lodge of instruction near to attend . Bros . Wright and Chapman responded for " The Visitors . " The Tyler's toast brought the proceedings to a close . 'The pleasure of the evening ' s entertainment vvas much added to by songs and recitations by Bros . Marsh , McKenzie , Pegram , Chapman , and Piper .

GUERNSEY . Doyle ' s Lodge of Fellowship ( No . 84 ) . —A most interesting meeting of this lodge was held on the ioth inst . at the Alasonic Hall , and the presence of an unusual number of Past Alasters and old members significantly emphasised Ihe character of the proceedings . The lodge having been opened by the LP . AL , Bro . Ilamel , the

Secretary produced a telegram which he had received from the W . AL , Bro . Alajor Giles , regretting that important business in London prevented his attendance that evening . The minutes of the last regular meeting having been read and confirmed , Bro . Wilkins , P . AL , referring to the great loss vvhich the nation at large , and more particularly the Craft , had sustained in the sad death of the Duke of

Clarence and Avondale , proposed that the following Past Alasters : Bros . Balfour Cockburn , Edward Ozanne , and Rev . P . G . Pickeiing , should at once prepare an address to the Grand Master , expressing thc respectful sympathy of all the members of the lodge in the terrible affliction which had fallen on his Royal Highness and his Royal House . This vvas seconded by Bro . Hamel , and at once approved

and carried . Lieut . Kempson vvas then initiated , the charge being most excellently and impressively delivered by Bro . the Rev . P . G . O . Pickering , Chap . 'The Secretary then requested that the W . AL would call upon Bro . Stickland , P . AL , to carry out a ceremony , notice of vvhich had been purposely omitted ( rem the summons , as it vvas desired

to be a pleasing surprise to the oldest and most respected brother of the lodge . Bro . Stickland , P . AI , having desired Bros . Balfour Cockburn , P . AL , and Bro . Lainc , P . AL , to present Bro . Guilbert , P . AL , in the East , proceeded in most eloquent and fervid terms to eulogise the long and zealous Masonic career of this respected brother . It vvas , he said ,

a most unusual thing for that lodge to give testimonials , and therefore the value of that presentation vvas all the greater , and it vvas most significant of the high position that Bro . Guilbert held , and had always held , in the esteem of the members of the lodge , that in 1 S 6 7 Bro . Guilbert had received a Past Alaster ' s jewel for his valuable services in the chair . He ( Bro . Stickland ) , as the oldest member of

the lodge , felt it a great privilege that he had been selected to perform this , one of the most pleasing duties that had ever fallen to his lot , to present his old and valued personal friend and brother , on behalf of the members of the lodge , with that handsome Past Treasurer ' s jewel . Bro . Guilbert , P . M ., responded in a few words , thanking the lodge generally , and apologising for his inability to express adequately

his grateful acknowledgments , but he was quite overcome by surprise and emotion . After a few minor matters had been satisfactorily arranged , the lodge vvas closed . We may add that the Past Treasurer's jewel to vvhich allusion has been made above is not merely very beautiful ,

but is singularly appropriate , the ribbon being embellished vvith the arms of the island , enamelled in proper colours , and the circular medallion being attached to the ribbon by vine branches , richly painted . This exquisite piece of work was manufactured by Bro . George Kenning from a design suggested by Bro . Balfour Cockburn , P . AL

Some business of a charitable nature vvas afterwards gone into , after vvhich the lodge vvas closed , and the brethren dined together at the Lamb and Lark Hotel , under the

presidency of the W . M . We are sorry to add that illness prevented the P . G . AI ., Lord Dungarvan , from being present . At the banquet which followed the installation , the W . AI . proposed " The Queen and the Craft" in suitable terms , and in submitting " The M . W . G . M ., H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , and the rest of the Royal Family , " feelingly alluded to the death of the Duke of Clarence .

The W . AI . next proposed "The Pro Grand Alaster , the Earl of Lathom j Dep . Grand . Master , the Earl of . Mount Edgcumbe j and Officers of Grand Lodge , Present and Past . " ln rising to respond , Bro . R . C Else , Dep . Prov . Grand . Master and P . G . D . of England , the Installing Masterof the day , vvas enthusiastically received . Bro . Else replied

as follows : 1 am exceedingly sorry that 1 have to leave early and thus interrupt your programme , but I have to go into another part of the province to-morrow to perform a similar function . I have to thank you very much for your very kind reception , and for coupling my name with the toast of the Grand Lodge of England . VV e are all of us aware that after the death of our own truly beloved Pro G . AL , the

Earl of Carnarvon , it pleased the Grand Alaster to appoint thc Earl of Lathom in his place , and vve could not possibly get a better Pro Grand -Master . With regard to the Earl of Alount Edgcumbe , we are not so well able to judge in this part of the province , but it is believed that his Royal Highness has made a judicious and wise selection . As regard the officers of Grand Lodge , I have to ask

the ofiicers to attend from time to time and see their work . Before leaving you this evening 1 desire to refer to the wise selection made by this lodge in re-electing my old friend Bro . Charlie Pfeiffer as its VV . AL , and a better man , I am sure , they could not have found . 1 do not know any one who is more thoroughly imbued with the principles of Freemasonry by doing his best to practice out of the lodge

those duties he learns within it . 1 trust this second year of office may be a very happy one . One word of advice , though I hardly think it necessary in this lodge of St . Keyna , in selecting the ashlar to be fashioned into good Alasons , be careful of the quarry from which the ashlar is chosen . Nothing conduces more to the welfare of thc lodge thin the quality of its members . I congratulate you on the move you are about to make in getting premises of your own , and

I hope the members will be able to successfully carry this out , as I am sure it is for the welfare of every lodge to have a hall or room of its own . Bro . Gay , P . AL , proposed the next toast—that of "The W . M . "—which vvas received vvith enthusiasm . He said they had heard vvhat the Deputy said about him , which they could all endorse , and he needed only to add that he vvas a good Alaster , an excellent worker , and always at his post to

time . T he Worshipful Alaster suitably replied at some length , referring to the pride he experienced at being re-elected and promising to use . every effort to maintain the prestige of the lodge and the quality of its members . He would endeavour to deserve their renewed confidence . Bro . Gay , P . AL , proposed "The LP . M ., Bro . Naish , "

and in doing so spoke to the fact of Bro . Naish being instrumental in the lodge tending £ Sy to the Boys' School . Bro . Naish returned thanks in appropriate terms . Bro . Hobkirk , P . AL , submitted " The Visiting Brethren , " vvhich vvas duly acknowledged by Bros . Geary , P . M . GSj C . J . E . Grubb , VV . M . 08 j and Galpin , P . AL GS .

AL GS .
