rapid rise showed what energy and ability would accomplish , and might well inspire hope in the breasts of the initiates of that day . Bro . R . W . Nicole , W . M ., in reply , thanked the brethren for the kind and hearty manner in which they had received the toast of his health . He had been impressed by the ceremony through which he had passed that day . They knew that he had the interests of the lodge at heart , and would do his utmost to uphold the dignity of the chair and the prestige of the lodge .

In proposing the toast of " The Initiates , " the W . M . said how gratified he was to begin his year of office with five initiates , but especially proud and happy was he at having initiated his brother .-Each of the initiates gave a brief and suitable reply . . Bros . Nell , P . M ., and Cobb , P . M ., replied for "The Past Masters , " and a kindly reference was made to Bro . E . H . Moore .

The W . M . gave a hearty welcome to all the visitors . Some of them had been with them several times , which spoke well for the entertainment they received . In the case of some who were there for the first time , he hoped to see them again . Bro . H , J . Macfarlane , W . M . 27 , said that it was a very great pleasure to him to be present ; he thought he should express the feeling of all the visitors in saying they had enjoyed themselves very much . They appreciated the working of the installation and the initiation , and congratulated the lodge and the W . M . on the happy commencement of what bid fair to prove a memorable year .

Bro . Duncan , P . M . 59 , also briefly replied , and Bro . W . H . Bolt , I . P . M . 1563 , gave some humorous reminiscences of former visits . " The Treasurer and Secretary , " proposed by Bro . Coxon , P . M ., was replied to by Bros . Petch , Treas ., and Bell , Sec . Some excellent songs were given by Bros . H . R . Bowers , C . Isler , E . N . Beningfield , H . J . Macfarlane , M . A . Attwood , and Alf . Atkin , and recitations by Bros . E . Blinkhorn and C M . Coxon . The Tyler ' s toast brought to a close a very pleasant and highly successful meeting .

The ballot was taken for Messrs . F . Elvin and J . M . Sillitoe , which , proving unanimous in each case , those gentleman were both initiated . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the dinner table , when an enjoyable evening was spent .

After the usual routine business a ballot was takeh for a candidate for advancement , Bro . William Hipkins , 155 1 , which proved unanimous . Bro . Hipkins was then advanced to the honourable Degree of a Mark Master Mason with full musical ceremony by the W . M . The W . M . then unveiled the portrait of Bro . Edward Mallard , which had been previously hung in the lodge room , and which proved to be a very striking likeness in oil , massively framed , and representing the brother in full Provincial Grand Lodge clothing and jewels . Annexed to the frame was a plate , with the following

inscription : — " Presented to Wor . Bro . Edward Mallard , P . M ., P . M , 115 , P . C . N . 115 , P . Prov . G . W ., by the Wor . Master , officers , and brethren of the Charity Lodge , No . 430 , in token of their affectionate fraternal esteem , June 5 th , iSy 5 . Sir James Sawyer , Knt ., W . M ., etc . " With the portrait was an illuminated address , handsomely bound in Morocco and beautifully engrossed , which read as follows : " This is to record that the accompanying portrait was presented by the Wor . Master , Bro . Sir James Sawyer , Knt ., M . D ., the Wor . Past Masters , &

Officers , and Brethren of the Lodge to the Wor . Bro . Edward Mallard , P . M ., & c , c , the Chief Founder and Past Master , in token of their affectionate and fraternal esteem and in recognition of his great services to Mark Masonry in general and the Charity Mark Lodge in particular . " This address was signed by the VV . M ., and bore the names and full Masonic titles of the Most Noble Bro . the Marquess of Hertford , P . Pro G . M . of England , & c , and Prov . G . M . of the Province ( Honorary Past Master ) , and the Past Masters and officers of the lodge , executed in the artist's best form . In

presenting the address and portrait to the Worshipful Brother , the W . M . reminded the brethren that he was the fourth occupant of the chair of the Charity Mark Master Masons' Lodge , and felt that the remainder of his tenure of office should be a season of thanksgiving ; the thanksgiving of the brethren , he added , would not be complete unless they recognised the great and exceptional services of Bro . E . Mallard , who was the First Master and Chief Founder of the lodge , and who had rendered such signal and successful services to Mark Masonry in general and the Charity Mark Master Masons' Lodge

in particular . With that feeling and for those reasons he had initiated the movement which had been so generously and warmly supported by the Past Masters , officers , and brethren of the lodge , and which was crowned by the presentation it was his joy to offer for Bro . Mallard ' s acceptance . Not only was their gratitude due to their first W . M , for the chief part he had taken in founding the lodge , but they owed him a greater debt in his continued zeal , wise counsel , and energetic guidance , which had so much conduced to place the lodrre in the hieh position it occupied in the Province of Warwickshire . After the usual routine business a ballot was takeh for a candidate for advancement , Bro . William Hipkins , 155 1 , which proved unanimous . Bro . Hipkins was then advanced to the honourable Degree of a Mark Master Mason with full musical ceremony by the W . M . The W . M . then unveiled the portrait of Bro . Edward Mallard , which had been previously hung in the lodge room , and which proved to be a very striking likeness in oil , massively framed , and representing the brother in full Provincial Grand Lodge clothing and jewels . Annexed to the frame was a plate , with the following

" With the portrait was an illuminated address , handsomely bound in Morocco and beautifully engrossed , which read as follows : " This is to record that the accompanying portrait was presented by the Wor . Officers , and Brethren of the Lodge to the Wor . Bro . Edward Mallard , P . M ., & c , c , the Chief Founder and Past Master , in token of their affectionate and fraternal esteem and in recognition of his great services to Mark Masonry in general and the Charity Mark Lodge in particular . " This address was signed by the VV . M ., and bore the names and full Masonic titles of the Most Noble Bro . the Marquess of Hertford , P . Pro G . M . of England , & c , and Prov . G . M . of the Province ( Honorary Past Master ) , and the Past Masters and officers of the lodge , executed in the artist's best form . In

presenting the address and portrait to the Worshipful Brother , the W . M . reminded the brethren that he was the fourth occupant of the chair of the Charity Mark Master Masons' Lodge , and felt that the remainder of his tenure of office should be a season of thanksgiving ; the thanksgiving of the brethren , he added , would not be complete unless they recognised the great and exceptional services of Bro . E . Mallard , who was the First Master and Chief Founder of the lodge , and who had rendered such signal and successful services to Mark Masonry in general and the Charity Mark Master Masons' Lodge

in particular . With that feeling and for those reasons he had initiated the movement which had been so generously and warmly supported by the Past Masters , officers , and brethren of the lodge , and which was crowned by the presentation it was his joy to offer for Bro . Mallard ' s acceptance . Not only was their gratitude due to their first W . M , for the chief part he had taken in founding the lodge , but they owed him a greater debt in his continued zeal , wise counsel , and energetic guidance , which had so much conduced to place the lodrre in the hieh position it occupied in the Province of Warwickshire . ' 1

Mallard to accept the portrait and address which had been preparedfor him—to find a place for them in his happy honie as memorials of their gratitude , and to accept also their affectionate desires that he might live long to enjoy his place in their lodge and in the heartfelt esteem of tne brethren , and that on his happiness there might always belong to him that which was so conspicuously his due , " honour , love , obedience , troops of friends .
