presented to Bro . Holleyman , I . P . M ., for services rendered during his year of ollice , and a vote of thanks was tendered to Bro . Spmks , and ordered to be inscribed on the minutes of the lodge , for the very able manner in which he had officiated as Installing Officer that day . Those brethren having briefly acknowledged the courtesies tendered them the lodge was closed , and after an interval the brethren sat down to a banquet , excellently served under the direct
superintendence of Bro . J . VVhiteheart . Among those present and not above alluded to were Bros . C . Coupland , P . M . 1526 , 913 , P . P . G . J . W . Kent ; Dr . F . Spurrell , P . Brewer , 4 SS ; J . N . Carey , 1 S 17 ; and C . Jolly , 913 , S . D . 1472 ( Freemason ) , about 100 brethren altogether . " The Oueen and the Craft , " " His Royal Highness the Prince of "Wales , G . M . of England , " "The Pro and Deputy Grand Masters , and the rest of the Grand Officers " having
been honoured , 'that of the iYI . YV . the P . G . M ., Lord Holmesdale , and the D . P . G . M ., Bro . Eastes , was drunk with cheers . In giving it the W . M . said he felt truly proud to call himself a Kentish Mason , and he knew they all felt it an honour , as he did , to be presided over by such a G . M . as Lord Holmesdale . He ( the W . M . ) had had the privilege of attending Provincial Grand Lodge at Tunbridge lately , and had been much struck with the dignity , grace ,
and ability with which their G . M . presided . After referring to the magnificent amount collected for the Boys' School , under the auspices of Lord Holmesdale , and of the handsome sum sent up by the Province of Kent , he said that day had seen a great honour conferred on the lodge by the presence among them of their esteemed D . P . G . M ., Bro . Eastes , in whose presence he would refrain from saying more than that they were pleased and proud to have him
with them , and he now asked the brethren to receive the toast with a good military fire . Bro . EASTES , who , on rising to respond was received with several rounds of cheers , said their W . M . had spoken very kindly of the pleasurable day he had spent at Tunbridge , and of the courtesy and kindness of Lord Holmesdale , their P . G . M . ; for that , and for the cordial manner in which they , had received the toast , he sincerely thanked
them . He could assure them that there was no better chief in the world to serve under than Lord Holmesdale . As for himself , he would at once say that the working , both lodge and installation , had been a great treat to him , and he was greatly pleased with the thorough and efficient manner in which Bro . P . M . Spinks had carried out the latter ceremony . He knew of no body of Masons who , in his experience , were more
thoroughly Masonic in their characteristics than the brethren of military lodges , for they were , b y the exigencies of the service , spread over the habitable globe , and it was the excellent training they received in such lodges as that that made Masonry respected whereever a military lodge existed . Now he could not go away without thanking Bro . Weston , their charity representative , and the lodge generally for its handsome contribution
to the late Boys' School festival I'und . The contributions from all sources amounted to £ 23 , 000 , and was something wonderful . It had since been said that such a sum would never be collected again , but whether it was or not the Province of Kent had responded nobl y to the appeal of its Grand Master , and had sent up 40 Stewards with some £ 2300 . It was a magnificent result , and why should not the province repeat it ! It could be easily done . Let the
brethren form combinations in their lodges , and pay in one shilling per month to a fund , and in time every member would be a life subscriber to one of the charities , if not a Lite Governor . Bro . Eastes concluded a stirring address by promising to stay longer with them the next time he visited the lodge . During his speech and on his retiring our esteemed brother was enthusiastically applauded and cheered , and left the lodge amid demonstrations of respect
and regaid . In responding for " The rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , " Bro . Spencer , who was received with cheers , thanked the VV . At . for his flattering remarks touching the P . G . Officers , but deprecated what then had been said of him personally especially , when he saw such good and worthy officers on his right and left . The Grand Officers had only one desire and that was the
good of Freemasonry in general , and the honour and piosperity of the province especially . Why , their good friend Dr . Spurrell was ubiquitous ; and as for Bro . Coupland , he ( Bro . Spencer ) could safely say that there was not a gathering together of Masons in the province , but Bro . Coupland was present to assist them with his council and experienced Masonic knowledge . Bro . Bates was a most energetic Mason , while Bro . Weston was
always at work in the cause of charity , and a constant attendant at their Provincial Charity Committee meetings . For himself he could only say that he tried always , and had , he believed , so done the duties entrusted to him as to evoke the kind and hearty good wishes of the brethren . That was the first time that he had ever attended the United Military Lodge , and he must say that he was rather ashamed to acknowledge it . The orderly and
systematic manner in which the work had been performed had given him an immense deal of pleasure , and he did not hesitate to say that any lodge , and the best of them , might gain a lesson from witnessing the perfect manner in which the ceremonies were there carried out . He thanked them for the toast , and should look back to that day as one of the best and most enjoyable in his Masonic career .
Having a long journey before him he then retired amid the cheers and hearty good wishes of the brethren . The I . P . M . then proposed the toast of " the YV . M ., " and said he knew he should not ask them in vain to do honour to it . They all knew what a good old mason Bro . Kenneday was , and how often fortune had frowned on him in his Masonic career , Fifteen years ago their W . M . was S . W .

of the Adams lodge at Sheerness , but the exigencies of the service called him away from it . Fortune had however smiled upon him now , and placed him in the chair as the head of their lodge . He felt sure that in Bro . Kenneday they had a master who would do honour to the lodge , and increase its prosperity . Bio . Kenneday in response thanked them for the cordial reception of the toast ; especially was it pleasant and
encouraging to him now that he had left the serene atmosphere ol the West for the hot glare that fell upon him as their W . M . in the East , and hoped , and trusted he should not fall short of their good opinions . He was pleased to see so many visitors present . He had not taken office without considering the responsibilities of the position , and had accepted them , and trusted that at the end of his year of office he nor they would have nothing to regret .
1 he other toasts were the " The Installing Officer , " "The Past Masters , " "The Visitors , " " The Officers of the Lodge , " "The Masonic Press , " "Bros . VVhiteheart and Froud , the Decoration Committee , " "The Host , " and the Tyler's toast . Bros . H . Harding , F . Nichols , Richards , R . Anderson , and Walker played selections during the evening , and the singing was furnished by Bros . Nichols , Cooper , Harding , and Fisher , in admirable style .

Coulson , W . M ., Bro . J . J . Athey , S . W ., giving the working tools . The lodge was
then closed down to the First Degree , and the W . M . reported that he had attended a special meeting of Grand Lodge in response to a summons and a special letter from Bro . Robert Hudson , Prov . G . Sec , to assist in a revision of the Book of Constitutions . He also mentioned that Bro . Hudson , was anxious to have as much support as possible , as there were several points to be considered which affected Provincial brethren especially . He was
happy to say that every point they went in tor they succeeded in carrying . Amongst other points carried was a clause enabling the Prov . G . M . to appoint an Assistant Grand Secretary and other Grand Officers . The former was particularly necessary in such a large and growing province as that of Durham . Though Grand Lodge sat from 4 until half-past 9 the whole of the business was not gone through , but was adjourned .
Bro . C Wawn moved , in pursuance of notice previously given , that the lodge devote £ 10 10 s . to the funds of the Royal Masonic Institution lor Boys . Ihe resolution was seconded . Bro . Wm . Davidson , J . YV ., moved , as an amendment , that the sum be £ 21 , when the question was raised as to
the regularity of the amendment , and after some discussion it was resolved to adjourn the question for a month , Bro . Davidson giving notice that the sum be £ 21 . The lodge then closed in love and harmony , and the brethren adjourned downstairs , where a pleasant evening was spent .
