Picnic Of The Sunderland Fraternity.

PICNIC OF THE SUNDERLAND FRATERNITY .

The annual picnic of the brethren of Sunderland took place under most auspicious circumstances , on the 5 th inst ., at Studley Royal , the seat of the Alarquis of Ripon , Throughout the day the weather was exceptionally line , and the Committee , who had made the most complete and

satisfactory arrangements , received general congratulations on the success of the picnic . The party , numbering about 220 , left the Central Station , Sunderland , at a quarter past S o'clock in the morning by special train . Ihey comprised the leading Alasonic brethren in the town , with their wives and friendi , and they were accompanied by his Worship the Alayor , Mr . J . W . Wayman , the Mayoress ,

stroll into the cathedral the party were conveyed in carriages and brakes to Studley Royal , the drive being greatly enjoyed . The stroll through Studley Park was very delightful , the grounds being in magnificent order . The grandeur of the park and of the landscapes generally could not have been seen to greater advantage , and it is not surprising that the Princess of Wales was greatly

charmed upon her visit in 1 SG 3 , shortly alter her arrival in England , to this most delightful place . About noon the party arrived at Fountain's Abbey , the first grand pile erected by the Cistercians , on their leaving the Benedictine Order at York towards tne close mi the twelfth century . A splendid luncheon was provided in the cloisters ot the Abbey by Bro . R . E . Collinson , of the Unicorn Hotel ,

Ripon , presided over by his worship the Mayor , at the express desire of the Chairman of the Committee , Bro . C AlcNamara , the vice-chairs being filled by Bros . AlcNamara and J . C . Moor ( Freemason ) . ihe Mayor was supported by the Alayoress , Alderman and Mrs . Potts , Bro . F . Aladdison , Bro . H . J . and Airs . Turnbull , Bro . W .-and Mrs . Liddell , Bro . and Airs . J . Picnic Of The Sunderland Fraternity.

Wm . Lax . Luncheon being over the Chairman proposed the loyal toasts . In giving "The Health of the Queen , " his YVORSHIP said they all felt the kindl y sympathy which her Majesty had expressed with the bereaved by the sad calamity at Sunderland . Bro . H . J . TURNBULL next proposed " The Ladies , " which was responded to b y Bro . I . S . GAINE .

The next toast—that of "The Worshipful Chairman the Alayor" —was proposed by Bro . WM . LIDDELL , and his WORSHIP thanked them-for the hearty reception they had accorded him . Immediately after the luncheon a photograph of the party was taken in front of Fountains Abbey by Bro . ; Stabler , of Sunderland . Within the Abbey grounds dancing ' was indulged in by the ladies and gentlemen present , and the eniovment of the afternoon was further i . r , v , ^ n ^ a ^ u ..

the admirable singing of the choir of Rothcrham Parish Church and a quartette from Sheffield Church , the latter consisting of Alessrs . Nicholson , Bercsford , Fremantlc , and Birket Foster . This part of the proceedings was so highly appreciated that his Worship tendered his thanks to the choirs on behalf of the party . After viewing the delightful scenery of the grounds tea was served in the cloisters . The party afterwards returned to Ripon in conveyances , reaching Sunderland shortly before ten o'clock , having enjoyed the picnic-to the utmost .

The Theatres.

THE THEATRES .

Bro . J . L . and Mrs . Toole have been staying at Florence and Geneva . # & ;* Her Majesty ' s and the Ol ympic are to be let for a term . The Globe , Opera Comique , and Princess ' s

must be added to the theatres " shut up . " « « * Aliss Maud Hranscombe takes a company to the provinces shortly under the management of Air . Chamberlyn . She will have many good wishes go with her for a successful tour .

The Imperial reopened on Monday last under Mr . Monck ' s management . Captain Roebuck and a number of the members of an American company appeared in "Still Waters Run Deep . "

We cannot say anything in praise of the new Italian Opera brought out at the Folies Dramatiques last Saturday . It would be better to keep the house closed until September , when " Estrella " is promised to be produced again .

* The Gaiety has been occupied this week with a new comic opera , "Virginia and Paul , " by Solomon and Stephens , authors of " Billee Taylor . " Aliss Lilian Russell ( the American actress ) , Bro . Dallas , and Mr . Williams are in the piece .

Drury-lane Theatre is announced to reopen on August 4 th , the Saturday before Bank Holiday , when a new and original drama , written by Bro . Augustus Harris and Air . Rowe , entitled "Freedom , " will be produced . It is now in active rehearsal .

* Bro . Henry Irving' handed ^ 1000 over as the results of his special performances at the Lyceum for the Royal College of Alusic . About the same was the result of the concert at the Guildhall , on the 9 th inst ., when their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales and Lord Spencer attended .

# # * Mrs . Langtry will probably arrive here in about a month and will play at the Gaiety in a matinee as " Rosalind . " She then goes to Manchester and other places in England . Airs . Langtry has made arrangements for a colonial tour , probably extending to continental towns . She will be away more than two years . # #

« The Grand , lately the Philarmonic , is announced to be opened after rebuilding on August 6 th , with an entirely new drama , "A Bright Future . " It is built with all the latest improvements and may be expected to fulfil a want long existing in Islington and neighbourhood , of a comfortable theatre , moderate prices , and good plays . * # #

The Adelphi will shortly reopen with "The Streets of London " as a pro . tern , drama . Miss Alice Raynor will appear in it as " Lucy . " She has been for a long time playing leader characters at the Surrey Theatre . She will find a hearty welcome at the popular Strand home of melodrama . The Adelphi is once more in the hands of Alessrs . A . and S . Gatti .

* * * Toole's will reopen on the 26 th inst ., under Messrs . Tom Robertson and Bruce ' s management , with the late T . VV . Robertson ' s comedy " M . P . " Mr . Fred Irving is engaged for a part in it . Bro . J . I .. Toole closed

his theatre in the very height of success ; " Stage Dora " has brought more money than anything else this year ; but engagements had been made , and therefore required to be kept . Bro . Toole will reopen in the autumn with " Stage Dora . "

¦ * ¦ * % Notwithstanding having played nine time ' s at matinees and night performances in six days Aladame Sarah Bernhardt appeared at the New Club on Saturday on leaving the Gaiety . The audience was kept waiting over an hour while the celebrated actress recovered somewhat from the tremendous strain she had just undergone . A

band ( the Thuringian ) played until Sarah ' s arrival ; but her throat was hoarse and she was not herself . The Gaiety plays came to an end on Saturday last . Although they have not been such a success as usual—except the last week—we are requested to state that Bro . John Hullingshead has no intention of not reintroducing them next year . Indeed he has already engaged Aladame Bernhardt and some other actresses for next season .

A . and S . Gatti .

* * * Toole's will reopen on the 26 th inst ., under Messrs . Tom Robertson and Bruce ' s management , with the late T . VV . Robertson ' s comedy " M . P . " Mr . Fred Irving is engaged for a part in it . Bro . J . I .. Toole closed

his theatre in the very height of success ; " Stage Dora " has brought more money than anything else this year ; but engagements had been made , and therefore required to be kept .
