the Institution at Bittersea during the holidays visited the camp of the Victoria Rifles at Wimbledon , where they were most hospitably entertained , being very kindly conducted over the camp by Bro . Henry Smith , Prov . G . Sec . West Yorkshire . We need scarcely add that the tteat was much appreciated by the girls . The late Mr . William Ward , of 4 , The Lawn ,

Brixton-hill , who recently died , has left £ 20 , 000 to the Corporation of London towards the erection and maintenance of a High School for Girls , to correspond as far as possible with the City of London School . Another £ 20 , 000 from the same bequest is available , in the terms of the will , to be applied in the founding of some permanent charitable or philanthropic institution . In either case

the name of the testator is to be attached to the title of the foundation . Bro . H . Baldwin , Secretary of the Royal Hanover Lodge , No . 1777 , desires us to notify that the election meetingof this lodge will be held on Saturday , the 2 Sth inst ., at the Albany Hotel , Twickenham , at 5 . 30 p . m . He

furtherasks us to state that an emergency meeting will be held on Friday , the 10 th of August next , at the same hour and place . The 1 st and 3 rd Degrees will be conferred at the latter meeting , Bro . George Anthony Aletzger of Sierra Leone , west coast of Africa , standing on the agenda for the 3 rd Degree . Bro . In connection with Bro . Alderman Hadley s recent visit to America , the New York Times says : — "The lowering of the Atlantic cable tolls is only a question of time , of course . The present rates are too high . They are too high for the business interests of America and Europe , which are injuriously affected by whatever tends to check free and prompt communication , and

are hig her than is justified by the present cost ot constructing and operating cables . The old cables are said to have cost about S , ooo , ooo dollars each . For 3 , 250 , 000 dollars a company represented by Mr . Alderman Hadley , of London , proposes to lay a cable from Penzance to the Nova Scotia coast , and thence to the east

end of Long Island . This represents a substantial saving in the first outlay , and if the new company is to deal fairly with the public it will be in a position to transmit messages for a much lower sum per word than is charged by the old companies . The capacity of Mr . Alderman Hadley's company to carry out the promises of its beginning remains to be demonstrated , but its work will be watched with great interest in this country . "

The annual prize festival of the Royal Normal College and Academy of Alusic for the Blind , situated in Upper Norwood , took place on Wednsday afternoon and evening , commencing with a vocal and instrumental concert given by the pupils of the college in the concert-room at the Crystal Pala ; e , the audience bung very numerous . The City Press says a petition from the Hornsey Local Board in reference to the Alexandra Palace has been loogedat Guildhall , endoised by Mr . J . T . Br ., formerly of 10 , Aberdeen-park , Highbury , but late of Holmivood Lodge , Bishopswood-road , Highgate , who died on May 5 th last , has been pioved by Mrs . Martha VVagstaffe Filer , the widow , and Aliss Isabella Filer , the daughter , the executrixes , the value of the personal estate amounting to over £ 54 , 000 . The testator to his

By order of the Secretary of State for War , twenty-seven mules that were purchased for the late Egyptian campaign were sold by auction on Alondav last by Air .
