was partially recognised by the Prov . Grand Secretary , Bro . James Newton , being deputed by the brethren of the lodge to present Bro . Houghton with a valuable jewel as a mark of esteem from thebrethren of his lodge . Bro . Newton prefaced his remarks by expressing his own regret and apology on the part of and for the unavoidable absence of trie Deputy Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Capt . C . R . N . Beswicke-Royds . In the course of his remarks on the presentation , Bro . Newton expressed his high satisfaction at the efficiency of the officers present , and the ability displayed by the Installing Master in so effectively rendering the important ceremonies of the evening .

Bro . Houghton thanked Bro . Newton for his courteous remarks , and the brethren of his lodge for that token of their esteem , assuring them that he had in his past efforts for ihe Craft sought no material reward , sufficient for himself being the assurance that he had given them some measure of satisfaction during his term of office . The newly-installed W . M ,, Bro . J . T . Taylor , then proceeded to invest his officers , which ceremony he performed in a most efficient manner . The I . P . M ., Bro . Houghton ,

gave the several addresses , after which Bro . James Newton , Prov . G . Sec , addressed the brethren at length with reference to the forthcoming Festival of the East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution , under the presidency of the Right Hon . Lord Stanley , M . P ., Prov . G . Master . Bro . Newton thanked the lodge for their efforts at the Festival in 1895 , and appealed to the brethren to exceed the amount contributed on that occasion . The lodge was then closed .

The brethren spent the remainder of the evening in mutual congratulation , and duly honoured the customary loyal and Masonic toasts , these being interspersed by songs rendered by Bros . Southerst , Harling , Harrison , Tomlinson , and Capt . Halstead , and a flute solo by Bro . J . S . Green , the accompanyist being Bro . R . H . Haworth , Org 215 , who acted in the absence of Bro . Franklin Hindle , C . C , Organist of Amity Lodge .

Alfred Lodge , No . 306 . , INSTALLATION OF BRO . J . A . BOORMAN . The brethren of the above lodge and visitors , including the W . Ms , of the other Leeds lodges , to the number of about 120 , spent a most enjoyable afternoon and evening on Friday , the 7 th inst ., at the Masonic Hall , Carlton Hill , Leeds . The occasion was the installation of Bro . J . A . Boorman , S . W ., into the chair of K . S . for the ensuing year and the subsequent celebra tion of the Festival of St . John . The lodge was opened

by the retiring W . M ., Bro . C . Fenton , when the G . Officers , comprising the Installing Master , Bro . J . C . Malcolm , P . G . D ., P . Dep . P . G . M ., and Bro . J . Strachan , Q . C , G . Reg ., and a numerous body of Prov . G . Officers and visitors entered the lodge . The installation ceremony was most impressively conducted by Bro . J . C . Malcolm , who , however , with Bro . Strachan , was obliged to leave before the termination of the proceedings . The obligation having been administered to Bro . Boorman , the anthem " Be thou faithful unto death " was sung by Bro . Tom Child . The newly-installed W . M .

invested the following brethren as his oflicers for the ensuing year : Bros . C . Fenton , LP . M . ; R . H . Crowther , S . W . ; R . A . Blackburn , J . W . ; J . C Moorhouse , Chap . ; A . Redmayne , P . M ., Treasurer ; S . Peckover , Secretary ; J . R . Barton , P . M . 42 , P . Prov . Asst . G . Sec , Assistant Secretary ; R . H . Blackburn , S . D . ; G . W . Longfield , J . D . ; W . A . Millard , LG . ; C . H . Wilson , P . M ., D . C ; J . Flockton and H . Bacon , Orgs . ; C E . Steel , E . S . Whalley , R . Farrar , and A . Thompson , Stwds . ; and T . F . Wheeler , Tyler . Bro . W . Towers , P . M ., was elected the Provincial

Charity Steward , on the motion of Bro . W . M . Tate , P . P . G . Std . Br ., seconded by Bro . R . H . Crowther , and was duly invested , and Bro . E . S . Whalley and the Senior Warden were elected as representatives of the lodge on the Leeds Charitable Institution . Bro . A . H . Gawthorp was appointed Musical Director . The festival of St . John the Evangelist was celebrated by a recherche" banquet , provided by Bro . Pilkington , manager to Powolny ' s Limited , in the dining room of the hall . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured , not forgetting "The

Masonic Charities , " which was proposed by Bro . W . Towers , the Charity Steward , and responded to by Bro , W , Blackburn ,. P . P . S . G . D ., and Chairman of the Provincial Charity Committee . Notwithstanding that the large number of guests tested the capacity of the room to the utmost degree , the evening was spent in a most enjoyable manner , the musical portion of the evening's entertainment being contributed by Bros . D . J . Miller , T . Child , K . A . Blackburn , C . Rhodes , C . Palliser , A . H . Gawthorpe , H . Gale , and other brethren .

Pattison Lodge , No . 913 . The above is a musical lodge , and takes a great deal of care and a rare lot of time over the musical portion of its ceremonial ; one of the officers explained to us that the principal reason for its—the musical—elaboration was that it made a good impression on the candidate or candidates . There certainly was plenty of it at their late meeting on Thursday , the Gth instant , when Bro . Arthur Moore , for the first time since his installation , presided as its head . The habitat of the lodge is at the handsome Masonic

Hall and Buildings , at the foot of Mount Pleasant , Plumstead ; and although it was a dreary and dull night—wet and windy , cold and miserable—yet not all the efforts of Old Boreas , acting in conjunction with the Pluvian Jupiter , or the prediction of that day's Standard , prevented the " Pattisons" and their brethren of neighbouring lodges attending—not in single spies , but in battalions . The lodge was opened soon after six p . m . by Bro . Moore , who commenced his work by raising Bro . Charles E . Peplow and initiating Mr . John E . Thompson , both ceremonies being most admirably worked by him and his new officers .

It was late before the lodge was closed , but a neat little cold collation was afterwards enjoyed . Alter dinner , the W . M . gave the usual loyal and Grand Lodge toasts , and in proposing that of " The Pro Grand Master , the Dep . G . Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " reminded the brethren of the fact that his Royal Highness had honoured their lodge in the person of their esteemed Bra . C Coupland , who had received at their Grand Master's hands the distinguishing collar of a

Jackson , M . A ., P . P . G . Chap ., Chap ., in responding to the toast of "The Provincial Grand Officirs , " said he was exceedingly glad to hnd himself amongst them once more , and to be their Chaplain . That was one of the reasons that brought him there that ni jht , and the next was to see how they were going on . He congratulated the lodge upon its W . M ., and the W . M . upon the excellent manner in

which he had performed the ceremonies of raising and initiation . He then in whimsical phrases spoke of his journey from near Gravesend in the " Flying Walkin . " They had actually performed the journey of 15 miles in one hour . He assured them that notwithstanding all the difficulties of his fast travelling , he should endeavour to attend the meetings of the lodge , and thus show his regard for the honour they had conferred upon him . So far as the rest of the P . G . Officers were concerned , he

believed they were all well . Bro . Eastes , their veteran and esteemed Deputy Grand Master , would the following day , entertain a large and distinguished body of Masons at his house at Ashford , on the occasion of the installation meeting of "The Invicta Lodge , " which held its meetings at Ashford , and of which Bro . Eastes was the oldest Past Master . In the name of the Past Prov . Grand Officers , he thanked them for their enthusiastic reception of the toast .

Bro . R . J . Cook , P . M ., P . P . G . R ., also responded , and assured thebrethren that wherever he had the honour of representing the lodge he should do all that lay in his power to make himself worthy of that honour . The I . P . M ., Bro . E . M . Taylor , then proposed the toast of " The W . M . " They all knew the reason of his once again handling the gavel . It was one of the most important as well as the most arduous duties the LP . M . or any other Past Master had to pertorm , so far as he knew , and that was to propose the health and prosperity ot the W . M . who had succeeded him ; and as Bro . Moore had succeeded him , it was his

pleasant , important , and honourable task to propise the toast of Bro . Moore ' s health" The king dies ; long live the king . " Bro . Moore had succeeded to the throne , and they trusted he would rule and govern as well as those who had preceded him . He Le ' . ieved it to be a firmly established fact that no Worshipful Mister ever quite believed that his predecessor or predecessors worked the ceremonies quite so well as he himself could ; but from what they had seen of the working of their Master that night , they who thought so , and he himself was of the opinion that if not quite up to the standard of their usual working , their W . M . had done very well , of course , for a first attempt . He would now take the opportunity

of thanking them for the vote of thanks tendered him that evening as the Installing Officer at their previous meeting . Well , he considered it to be the duty of every Master to install his successor . He believed in their W . M . they had a brother who would do all that was required of him without bombast , and finish his year of office with as much eclat as those who had preceded him , and at its close install his successor . He asked the brethren to give their W . M . all the kind , generous support they had given him ( Bro . Taylor ) , and then he felt sure that their W . M . 's year of office would be worthy of the high prestige of the Pattison Lodge .

The W . M ., who was received with applause , said their I . P . M ., in proposing his ( the W . M . 's ) health , had made statements , some wrong and some right . Those who achieved the position of W . M . at anyrace tried to do their work as well as their predecessors had done , and all he could say was that their I . P . M . had an immense amount of cheek . He should endeavour to do the work to their satisfaction . He certainly had not the confidence their LP . M . had , but he would leave it to them to say , when his year was finished , whether he had done it to their satisfaction or not . He thanked them most heartily for their kind reception of the toast .

The other usual lodge toasts were honoured , and some excellent singing by Bros . Nell , Kirkman , and others added much to the pleasure of a most enjoyable evening . Among the other brethren present were Bros . James Tucker , S . W . ; J . H . Bull , J . W . ; W . C Taylor , P . M ., Sec . ; F . Hoar , S . D . ; B . Hammond , J . D . ; Dr . J . Clarke , I . Ebury Lodge , No . 1348 . PRESENTATION TO BRO . C . STUART WALKER , W . M . The members of this lodge entertained a goodly company of lady friends and visitors at the Criterion Restaurant on the 29 th ult . A very pleasant and enjoyable evening was spent , thanks to the hospitality of the hosts and the capital entertainment provided . Each lady took away with her a choice bottle of scent as a souvenir of the occasion . Not the least pleasing incident of the proceedings was a presentation to the

W . M ., Bro . Stuart Walker , and Mrs . Walker , of a handsome silver sugar basin and sifter , as a token of the high esteem and regard in which the W . M . is held by the members . After an excellent banquet , at which the W . M . presided , " The Queen and the Royal Family " was heartily honoured . Bro . H . Fincham , P . M . and Sec , then made the presentation to the W . M . and Mrs . Stuart Walker , and said he need not tell the company of the affection and regard

in which the W . M . was held by every member . It was owing to that feeling and also to the splendid services rendered to the lodge by Bro . Stuart Walker that the members desired to offer a small token in recognition of their appreciation . Bro . C . Stuart Walker , W . M ., returned thanks for this act of kindness . With regard to any services he had rendered , he had certainly done what he could but had been more than repaid by their kindness . He could scarcely thank them for their valuable gift , and hoped—burglars willing—to be constantly reminded of the members

of the Ebury Lodge . Bro . C Botterill , LP . M ., then proposed "The Worshipful Master . " As the company were aware , the W . M . was the head of their lodge , and Bro . Walker was a very worthy representative of it . A great deal had already been said of the W . M . by the Secretary and in better terms than he could use . He had known the W . M . for a very long time , and the longer he knew him the better he liked him . Bro . Walker had taken a great deal of pains and shown great energy in making that evening a success , and he , therefore , asked all present to cordially drink his health .

Bro . C Stuart Walker , W . M ., said that whatever he had done towards the success of that evening , the honour of presiding over such a splendid audience was sufficient recompense . As W . M ., he had plenty of opportunities of responding in a regular way . As chairman of the evening , he sincerely thanked them for mustering in such splendid form and supporting him on their annual ladies' evening . The W . M . proposed as the last toast " The Ladies and Visitors , " offering them a cordial and hearty welcome , and expressing a sincere hope to see them all at the next

annual gathering . Bros . Huddon and Lardner briefly responded . The entertainment arranged by the W . M . was worthy of all praise both for its variety and excellence , and where all were so good it would be invidious to particularise . The artistes included Miss Angrove Williams , Miss Beatrice Cowley , Mr . James A . Davis , Bros . C . Stuart Walker , W . M . ; Alex . Edwards , W . Nelson , F . W . Stephens , P . M . ; W . E . Goodwins , and Will Edwards , and Mr . Walter Graham . Bro . A . W .

Bray , S . D ., officiated as Musical Director , and Bro . M . A . Attwood proved , as usual , an efficient accompanist . The company present included the W . M . and Mrs . Stuart Walker ; Bro . H . Fincham , P . M ., Sec . ; Bro . W . C . Wigley , P . M ., Treas . ; Bro . F . Stephens , P . M . j Bro . Atkin , P . M ., and Mrs . Atkin ; Bros . Nelson ( senior and junior ) * , Bro . Botterill , I . P . M . ; Bros . Whittick and Lotz ; Bro . and Mrs . Ward ; Capt . Thomson , and many others .

British Union Lodge , No . 114 . INSTALLATION OF BBO . V . D . COLCHESTER . The annual festival in connection with the above lodge was held at the Masonic Hall , Soane-street , Ipswich , on Thursday , the 6 th instant , when Bro . V . D . Colchester , P . P . S . G . D ., wasinstalledas W . M . tor the ensuing year in the presence of a large number of brethren and visitors .

Bro . H . C . Casley ably officiated as Installing Officer , and after the new W . M . had taken the chair , he appointed and invested his officers as follows : Bros . Hy . Miller , S . W . ; F . W . Turner , J . W . ; Rev . H . Carter , Chap . ; R . K . Casley , P . P . G . Treas ., Treas . ; C E . Tempest , P . P . J . G . D ., Sec . ; F . Ward , S . D . ; H . S . Jefferies , J . D . ; H . C . Casley , P . P . J . G . W ., D . C . ; B . C . Ransome , I . G . ; W . E . Watkins and H . E . Churchman , Stewards ; and George Gauld , Tyler .

Clausentum Lodge , No . 1461 . INSTALLATION OF BRO . JAMES KELLAWAY . The first of the annual Masonic installations in the Southampton district took place on the 5 th instant , when the brethren of the above lodge met in large numbers at their pretty headquarters at Woolston , to witness the installation of Bro . James Kellaway , the retiring Senior Warden , as Worshipful Master of the lodge for the ensuing is

months . The ceremony was admirably worked by Bro . R . Way Rider , P . M . The officers appointed were Bros . H . Slade , LP . M . ; J . Hinton , S . W . ; Nalder Roberts , J . W . ; Rev . G . Hughes , P . M ., P . G . Chap .. Chap . ; A . J . Brown , P . M ., P . P . G . Std . dr ., Treas . ; J . Methven , P . M ., P . P . S . G . D ., Sec ; F . Kimber , S . D . j G . W . Newnham , J . D . ; J . A . Biilett , Org . ; W . H . Chapman , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., D . C . j J . Key Allen , I . G . ; S . White , F . W . Wade , W . H . White , and R . H . Reed , Stwds . ; and C . Henley , Tyler .

After lodge business had concluded , the brethren sat down to an excellent banquet provided by Bro . C . Henley . The newly-installed W . M . occupied the chair , and was supported by a large nember of visitors and lodge brethren . Much regret was expressed at the absence of the retiring Master , Bro . H . Slade , who had met with an accident only the day before , which confined him to his house . It was incidentally mentioned during the proceedings that the [ . P . M . is to receive a Past Master's jewel for his services to the lod ^ e during the p ast year .

The Installed Masters present on the occasion were : Broi . R . W . Rider , W . M Chapman , P . P . J . G . D . ; J . Methven , P . P . S . G . D . ; A . J . B . own , P . P . G . Std . Br . W . J . He Le ' . ieved it to be a firmly established fact that no Worshipful Mister ever quite believed that his predecessor or predecessors worked the ceremonies quite so well as he himself could ; but from what they had seen of the working of their Master that night , they who thought so , and he himself was of the opinion that if not quite up to the standard of their usual working , their W . M . had done very well , of course , for a first attempt .

Slade , who had met with an accident only the day before , which confined him to his house . It was incidentally mentioned during the proceedings that the [ . P . M . is to receive a Past Master's jewel for his services to the lod ^ e during the p ast year .
