The lodge was then closed . Refreshment followed labour . . . Bro . W . Hopkins responded , in a neat speech , on bebalf of " The Provincial Grand Lodge . "

The I . P . M ., in submitting the toast of "The W . M ., " congratulated him upon the manner in which he had conducted the affairs of the lodge during the past year , and he hoped that he would crown his labours by installing his successor . The W . M . having briefly replied , gave " The Master Elect . " Bro . Webster , in reply , said that he had been elected to the chair a year earlier than he expected , but by punctual attendance at lodges of instruction he hoped to be able to merit the approval of the brethren . The Hemming was a large and important one in the province , and it was no mean task to preside over its destinies .

The toast of "The Past Masters" was coupled with the names of Bro . G Wheatley and G . Ransford , who briefly acknowledged the compliment . " The Health of the Treasurer and Secretary " and " The Officers " terminated the proceedings .

C . White at the piano , Bro . Duff at the organ , and Bro . Reasbeck at the violin , an . accomplished trio is formed such as few lodges can boast . As the visitors expressed , a most enjoyable hour was spent outside after some excellent work inside the lodge .

INSTALLATION OF BRO . F . J . SIMPSON . The installation meeting of the above popular and prosperous lodge took place a ; the King William the Fourth Hotel , East Greenwich , on Monday , the 3 rd inst ., and with only one exception was a very enjoyable one , the exception being the extreme lateness of the hour of banqueting , so that it was close upon 10 p . m . before the toast of "The Queen " was proposed and drunk . VVe trust our dear Greenwich friends will excuse us , but we do hope that on their next anniversary they will meet earlier or do less work .

The lodge having been opened by the W . M ., Bro . K . U . bimpson , Messrs . Foster and Brady were initiated , one of the Past Masters reciting the lecture very impressively . Bro . F . J . Simpson , S . W ., W . M . elect , was then presented to the W . M . —his own father —to receive at his hands the benefit of installation ; and we here and now congratulate our esteemed Bro . Simpson , sen ., upon the unique position he occupied—that of preceding and then installing his son in the chair ot this splendid lodge , of which he ( the father ! is a founder . The ceremony was most impressively performed , the Board of

BRO . SIR A . H . BEVAN , P . G . TREASURER . Bro . Sir A . H . Bevan ( ex-Sheriff of London ) , who died on the Sth instant , after a prolonged illness , and who had the honour of being elected to the office of Grand Treasurer for the ensuing year at the March Communication of Grand Lodge in 1899 , had a distinguished , if not a very prolonged , career in Masonry . He was initiated in the Friends-in-Council LodgeNo . 1383 in 1891 and was in

, , , the chair of W . M . at the time of his election to Grand Lodge office . In the interim , however , he exhibited great activity in Craft work . In 1892 he was a founder , and Subsequently elected W . M . for two years in succession , of the Eton Lodge , No . 2458 , Eton , and for his services in its behalf was appointed Prov . G . Registrar of Buckinghamshire . He also joined the Studholme Lodge , No . 1591 , the Canterbury Lodge , No . 1635 , and the jubilee Masters LodgeNo . 2712 while

, , during the year 18 99 he assisted in founding the Captain Coram Lodge and the Sydenham Lodge , Nos . 2737 and 2744 respectively . He was a Royal Arch Mason , having been exalted in the Friends-in-Council Chapter , No . 1383 , in 18 93 was a joining member of the Canterbury Chapter , No . 1635 , the Studholme , No . 159 1 , and the Studholme Brownrigg , No . 2421 , Amersham , Bucks ; while in 18 9 S he became founder and First Principal Z . of the Bevan Chapter , No . 255 ^ ,

Bucks , and subsequently Prov . G . S . N . Bucks . In 1899 he became ex-orffcio G . Treasurer of Supreme Grand Chapter . Nor did Bro . Sir A . H . Bevan confine his attention to Craft and Royal Arch Masonry . He was in 18 99 G . Treasurer of the Mark Grand Lodge , was installed Knight of the Temple in 1893 in the Studholme Preceptory , No . 140 , and was its E . Preceptor in 1899 , and in 18 95 joined the Temple Court Preceptory , No . 162 , Woking , while in the A . and A . Rite ha 0

had been perfected Rose Croix , and taken the 30 , and was a member of the Studholme Chapter , No . 6 7 . But more especially did our Institutions secure his services , and in addition to having acted many times as Steward for each of our Schools and for the Benevolent Institution , he was Patron of them all . Sir Alfred was a Governor of St . Thomas ' s and the Foundling Hospitals , and was generally well known and esteemed for his ardour in the cause of philanthropy .

L . of the County of Norfolk , and Major of the 3 rd Volunteer Battalion Norfolk Regimen ' , Past S . G . D ., was one of the most prominent Masons in Norfolk . He was initiated in the Union

Lodge , No . 52 , Norwich , on the 23 rd May , 1871 , and installed W . M . in 1880 , being appointed the same year Prov . S . G . W . He was installed in the Royal George Chapter , No . 52 , Norwich , on the 20 th June , 18 79 , and exalted in the chair of M . E . Z . in 1884 . In the following year he was appointed to the chair of Second Princi pal in the Prov . Grand Chapter . He was ' also a Mark Mason ,

having filled . the chair of A . in the Walpole Lodge of Mark Master Masons ,. No . 92 , Norwich , in 1892 ; a Knight Templar , and Past E . P . of the Cabbell Preceptory of that Order , and a Past M . W . S . of the Albert Edward Chapter , No . 87 , King ' s Lynn , which was founded in 1880 , and for the warrant of which H . R . H . the Prince of Wales was , according to a statement in Bro . Hamon le Strange ' s

" History of Freemasonry in Norfolk , " one of the petitioners . He also took the 31 in the Ancient and Accepted Rite , and was a Life Subscriber of our three Masonic Institutions ^ In 18 98 , on Bro . Hamon Le Strange ' s installation as Prov . G . Master Norfolk , Sir Francis was appointed his Deputy , and in the same year he succeeded Lord Suffield as G . Superintendent of the Province . '

BRO . JOHN PURROTT , P . M ., P . Z ., P . P . G . W . HERTS . The Halsey Lodge , No . 1479 , St . Albans , was consecrated by Bro . T . F

Halsey , M . P ., on the 29 th April , 18 74 , a few days after he had been installed Prov . G * . Master of Hertfordshire , and among the very earliest of its initiates was the worthy brother who passed away on the 9 th instant , Bro . John Purrott , whd , during the 26 years that have since elapsed , had devoted himself , heart and soul , to the advancement of Masonry , and , in so doing , won the love and respect of all Hertfordshire Masons from Bro . Halsey downwards . It was not long before Bro . Purrott was invested with the collar of oflice as S . D . of his lodge , and in 1870

he was installed as its W . Master . On vacating the chair the following year he was appointed Secretary , and in that capacity—in which he continued to act until the day of his death—he won golden opinions from its members and from the rulers of the province , and after serving as Prov . Grand Standard Bearer , was appointed Prov . S . G . Warden in 1894 . He was exalted in the Gladsmuir Chapter , No . 1385 , Barnet , in 1875 , and having gone through the ceremony within the period of 12 months—which was then the legal Qualif ying

BRO . SIR A . H . BEVAN , P . G . TREASURER . Bro . Sir A . H . Bevan ( ex-Sheriff of London ) , who died on the Sth instant , after a prolonged illness , and who had the honour of being elected to the office of Grand Treasurer for the ensuing year at the March Communication of Grand Lodge in 1899 , had a distinguished , if not a very prolonged , career in Masonry . He was initiated in the Friends-in-Council LodgeNo . 1383 in 1891 and was in

, , , the chair of W . M . at the time of his election to Grand Lodge office . In the interim , however , he exhibited great activity in Craft work . In 1892 he was a founder , and Subsequently elected W . M . for two years in succession , of the Eton Lodge , No . 2458 , Eton , and for his services in its behalf was appointed Prov . G . Registrar of Buckinghamshire . He also joined the Studholme Lodge , No . 1591 , the Canterbury Lodge , No . 1635 , and the jubilee Masters LodgeNo . 2712 while

, , during the year 18 99 he assisted in founding the Captain Coram Lodge and the Sydenham Lodge , Nos . 2737 and 2744 respectively . He was a Royal Arch Mason , having been exalted in the Friends-in-Council Chapter , No . 1383 , in 18 93 was a joining member of the Canterbury Chapter , No . 1635 , the Studholme , No . 159 1 , and the Studholme Brownrigg , No . 2421 , Amersham , Bucks ; while in 18 9 S he became founder and First Principal Z . of the Bevan Chapter , No . 255 ^ ,

Bucks , and subsequently Prov . G . S . N . Bucks . In 1899 he became ex-orffcio G . Treasurer of Supreme Grand Chapter . Nor did Bro . Sir A . H . Bevan confine his attention to Craft and Royal Arch Masonry . He was in 18 99 G . Treasurer of the Mark Grand Lodge , was installed Knight of the Temple in 1893 in the Studholme Preceptory , No . 140 , and was its E . Preceptor in 1899 , and in 18 95 joined the Temple Court Preceptory , No . 162 , Woking , while in the A . and A . Rite ha 0

had been perfected Rose Croix , and taken the 30 , and was a member of the Studholme Chapter , No . 6 7 . But more especially did our Institutions secure his services , and in addition to having acted many times as Steward for each of our Schools and for the Benevolent Institution , he was Patron of them all . Sir Alfred was a Governor of St . Thomas ' s and the Foundling Hospitals , and was generally well known and esteemed for his ardour in the cause of philanthropy .

L . of the County of Norfolk , and Major of the 3 rd Volunteer Battalion Norfolk Regimen ' , Past S . G . D ., was one of the most prominent Masons in Norfolk . He was initiated in the Union

Lodge , No . 52 , Norwich , on the 23 rd May , 1871 , and installed W . M . in 1880 , being appointed the same year Prov . S . G . W . He was installed in the Royal George Chapter , No . 52 , Norwich , on the 20 th June , 18 79 , and exalted in the chair of M . E . Z . in 1884 . In the following year he was appointed to the chair of Second Princi pal in the Prov . Grand Chapter . He was ' also a Mark Mason ,

having filled . the chair of A . in the Walpole Lodge of Mark Master Masons ,. No . 92 , Norwich , in 1892 ; a Knight Templar , and Past E . P . of the Cabbell Preceptory of that Order , and a Past M . W . S . of the Albert Edward Chapter , No . 87 , King ' s Lynn , which was founded in 1880 , and for the warrant of which H . R . H . the Prince of Wales was , according to a statement in Bro . Hamon le Strange ' s

" History of Freemasonry in Norfolk , " one of the petitioners . He also took the 31 in the Ancient and Accepted Rite , and was a Life Subscriber of our three Masonic Institutions ^ In 18 98 , on Bro . Hamon Le Strange ' s installation as Prov . G . Master Norfolk , Sir Francis was appointed his Deputy , and in the same year he succeeded Lord Suffield as G . Superintendent of the Province . '

BRO . JOHN PURROTT , P . M ., P . Z ., P . P . G . W . HERTS . The Halsey Lodge , No . 1479 , St . Albans , was consecrated by Bro . T . F

Halsey , M . P ., on the 29 th April , 18 74 , a few days after he had been installed Prov . G * . Master of Hertfordshire , and among the very earliest of its initiates was the worthy brother who passed away on the 9 th instant , Bro . John Purrott , whd , during the 26 years that have since elapsed , had devoted himself , heart and soul , to the advancement of Masonry , and , in so doing , won the love and respect of all Hertfordshire Masons from Bro . Halsey downwards . It was not long before Bro . Purrott was invested with the collar of oflice as S . D . of his lodge , and in 1870

he was installed as its W . Master . On vacating the chair the following year he was appointed Secretary , and in that capacity—in which he continued to act until the day of his death—he won golden opinions from its members and from the rulers of the province , and after serving as Prov . Grand Standard Bearer , was appointed Prov . S . G . Warden in 1894 . He was exalted in the Gladsmuir Chapter , No . 1385 , Barnet , in 1875 , and having gone through the ceremony within the period of 12 months—which was then the legal Qualif ying
