H . R . H . the Duke of Cambridge has consented to preside at the annual festival , at the Hfitel Metropole , on Thursday , the 19 th April , of the Royal Sea Bathing Infirmary , Margate . Bro . Dr . B . W . Richardson presided on the evening of the 23 rd inst . at a vegetarian dinner at the new restaurant in St . Bride-street , E . C , and afterwards gave one of a series of lectures on the subject of " Ideal Foods . "

Lord Herschell is one of the Royal Commissioners appointed to inquire into and report upon the working of Ihe Metropolitan Board of Works and the irregularities alleged to have taken place in connection therewith . The Mayor and Corporation of Windsor have unanimously resolved to confer the honorary freedom of

the borough on Prince Christian victor , the eldest son of Prince and Princess Christian , who will attain his majority on the 14 th prox . On the 22 nd February last , the anniversary of Washington ' sbirthday , acharter was signed by the Governor of Virginia for the erection of a Masonic Hall in

Fredericksburg in memory of George Washington , who was initiated in the Fredericksburg Lodge in 1752 . The Princess of Wales , with Prince George , and the Princesses Louise , Victoria , and Maud , and the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark , visited the Criterion Theatre on Saturday evening last , and witnessed the performance of " David Garrick . "

The annual dinner or the London Chamber of Commerce took place at the Hotel Metropole on the 22 nd instant , Bro . Lord Stanley of Preston being the guest of the evening , and Bros . Hugh C . E . Fowler , Bart ., M , P ., being also present , and taking pait in the proceedings . As will be seen from another column , the author of "Masonic Facts and Fictions" has arranged to deliver

a lecture on the banners and ensigns of the Royal Arch at the Hornsey Chapter of Improvement , Porchester Hotel , Paddington , on Friday , the 6 th prox ., at eight o'clock . Those who have never heard this interesting old lecture ought to embrace the present opportunity of hearing it delivered by one so well able to do justice to the subject as the Grand Janitor of England .

The Empress Eugenie visited the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark at Marlborough House on Tuesday , and stayed to luncheon . In the afternoon their Royal Highnesses , accompanied by Prince George of Wales and his three sisters , visited the studios of Bro . Sir F . Leighton and Mr . Val Prinsep . To-morrow ( Friday ) the Crown Prince and

Princess of Denmark leave England on their return to Denmark . There was a most interesting ceremony on Friday evening , the 23 rd instant , in the Temple of the Royal York Lodge at Berlin . Upwards of two thousand Masons had assembled to hold a commemorative service

for their departed brother , the Kaiser Wilhelm . The most distinguished members of the Craft , from all parts of Germany , came to Berlin for the occasion . In the centre of the Temple stood a ^ coffin , on which lay the Three Roses , and the ceremony was carried out according to due Masonic rites . Professor Wagner , a well-known Conservative , delivered a most excellent and impressive address .

The Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Pennsylvania held their 42 nd annual council at Erie , Pa ., on Wednesday , the 15 th February last . Comp . C . Francis , M . I . G . M ., presided . There was a numerous attendance , and the annual report was more than usually

interesting . The following vvere among the Grand Officers appointed for the current year , namely : Comps . John L Young , M . D ., G . M . ; D . A . Stevenson , D . G . M . ; Joshua L . Lyte , P . I . G . M . ; John J . Wadsvvorth , G . P . C of Wks . : James Brown , G . Treasurer ; and Charles E . Meyer , G . Recorder .

The Queen , accompanied b y the Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg , arrived at Florence at one p . m . on Saturday last , and was received at the Railway Station by the British Ambassador , Consul General , and Vice-Consul , General Driquet representing King Humbert , the Prefect and the Syndic , and the Court Chamberlains

appointed by the King to wait on her Majesty during her stay . The Royal party at once drove in an open carriage , escorted by Carabmien , to the Villa Palmieri , and met with an enthusiastic reception along the whole line of route . The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh arrived in Florence later in the day , and on Sunday morning paid a Visit to her Majesty ,

On Saturday , the 31 st instant , the Prince and Princess of Wales , accompanied by their son , Prince George of Wales , who has a month ' s leave of absence , will go to Sandringham for the Easter holidays . The will of the late Bro . Lord Northwick , J . P ., D . L ., who died on the iSth of November last , was proved

by the executors , 011 the 15 th instant , the personalty being sworn at upwards of £ 324 , 000 . The Queen has signified her intention of presenting annually a cup of the value of £ 100 , to be competed for by yachts at the regatta of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in August .

The Lady Christian Maule , sister of the late Bro . the Earl of Dalhousie , known also as Bro . Lord Panmure , who fcr many years was Deputy G . Master of England , died at her residence , Park House , Wimbledon , on the 21 st instant , in the S . i , rd year of her age .

The season of Saturday and Monday Popular Concerts closed on Saturday last and Monday respectively , St . James ' s Hall on both occasions being crowded , and the programmes , which vvere excellent , being enthusiastically received .

Bro . Dr . Josiah Williams , F . R . G . S ., author of "Life in the Soudan , " earnestly appeals to his brethren for support in bringing out his new work , entitled " The Anti-Human Turk , " and will be glad to enrol their names in his list of subscribers , to whom the work will be issued at the price of six shillings , post free . Bro . J . T . Agg-Gardner , Chairman of the

Country Brewers' Society , presided at a meeting of its members at the Westminster Palace Hotel , on the 22 nd instant , for the purpose of considering the clauses in the Ministerial Local Government Bill relating to the trade , and Bro . Sir Harry Bullard took part in the proceedings . Bro . the Lord Mayor presided at a meeting held at the Mansion House on the 23 rd instant , in connection

with the memorial to be raised in the new cemetery , at Brussels , to the memory of the British officers and men who fell during the Waterloo Campaign . The Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Wellington vvere present , and supported the proposal . The New Zealand Masonic Journal completed the first year of its existence in December last , having

entered on its career in January , 1 SS 7 . The first number of its second volume—that for January of the current year—augurs well for the further continuance of this wellconducted journal , which we hope to have the opportunity of reading for many a long day . Its budget of antipodean Masonic news is alwajs pleasant reading . The Prince of Wales was present at a grand

celebration at Exeter Hall on Saturday evening last by the German Societies in London in honour of the late Emperor William of Germany . The address , in which the virtues and achievements of his lale Majesty vvere set forth , was delivered by Professor Max Midler . Bro . Lord Stalbridge presided at the 19 th annual general meeting , held at Willis ' s Rooms , St .

James's , on the 22 nd instant , of the Society for Organising Charitable Relief and Repressing Mendicity . The receipts during the past year vvere £ 18 , 178 , of which £ 11 , 520 had been expending in making inquiries and affording relief , and the rest in office expenses and salaries . The report was adopted .

On Saturday last was laid in the grave in the cemetery at Rye the remains of probably the oldest Freemason in the kingdom , Bro . Charles Fletcher , who died at the advanced age of 95 . His connection with the Brotherhood had lasted from January 16 th , 1824 , until his death . He retained his faculties nearly till the end , and when 93 years of ' age walked to the poll to record his parliamentary vote .

The Fancy Dress Ball of the Holborn Cycling Club , of which Bro . Col . Duncan , C . B ., is President , was held on Thursday , the 21 st instant , at Freemasons' Hall . Nearly 250 persons vvere present , consisting of a great many brethren and their friends . The M . C . ' s were Bros . F . Jackson and C H . Fox , to whom great praise is due for their excellent management .

Cambridge was successful both at the Inter-University Athletic Sports at the Queen's Ground on Friday , the 23 rd instant , and in the boat race on Saturday last , winning five to four events at the former , and holding the lead and keeping it from start to finish with the greatest ease in the latter . 0 > ving to the dulness of the weather , the attendance on the river and the river banks was not

so numerous as usual , nor vvere the University favours worn by so many or so conspicuously . A smoking concert was given by the City Special Constables at the Cannon-street Hotel on Monday evening in aid of the funds of the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage . It had the patronage of Bros . Lord Mayor

De Keyser , Sheriff Davies , and Sheriff Higgs , the City Commissioner of Police , and other influential personages . There was a very numerous audience and an excellent programme , well carried out , and we trust the entertainment will be found productive of advantage to this excellent Institution .

On the evening of the 23 rd instant a successful assembly , under the auspices of St . Clair of Dysart Lodge , took place in the Norman Memorial Hall , Dysart , under the distinguished patronage of Bro . Major Oswald , of Dunnikier , Prov . Grand Master , and Miss Lina Oswald . There were over 60 couples present . Music was supplied by Messrs . Dunn and Davidson ' s quadrille band ,

Edinburgh , and Mr . Urquhart discharged the duties of M . C . Much labour had been expended in adding to the attractions of the hall , which was gaily decorated with palms , exotic ferns , lily of the Nile , and with banners and banneretis . Bro . Henry Irving , accompanied by Miss Ellen Terry and his company , left New York on board the Cib of Richmond , on his return to England , on Sunday last , Bros . Lord Norton , the Hon . Sir Stafford Northcote , M . P ., G . A . Sala , and many others dined at a Livery dinner of the Fishmongers' Company in their Hall by London Bridge , on Tuesday evening , the chair being occupied by the Prime Warden . s

Her Majesty has graciously expressed her intention of patronising the Royal Naval and Military Bazaar , the object of which is the maintenance and establishment of soldiers ' and sailors'homes in various naval and military stations at home and abioad . The bazaar will be held for three days in May in the Whitehall Rooms of the Hotel Metropole .

Princess Christian gave the last of her winter dinners to the poor children of Windsor on Tuesday , when nearly 200 boys and girls vvere entertained with soup bread , and jam pudding , her Royal Highness being assisted by the Mayor and Vicar and others . Upwards of 4500 children and 643 adults have been provided vvi th dinners since Christmas .

The Yarborough Lodge , No . 551 , held their meeting in the Masonic Hal 1 , Ventnor , on Tuesday evenino last . Mr . H . J . Burt was initiated , Bro . T . H . dough ' W . M ., performing the ceremony . A cheque was drawn fn- 10 guineas as a donation to the funds of the Rojal Masonic Institution for Girls .

Yet another lodge for the Province of Surrey ! A petition is being prepared praying for a warrant for a new lodge to be held at the Albany Hotel , Thames Ditton to be called the "Dagmar . " The object is to provide a summer lodge for the brethren in the South of London chiefly from Kennington .

The sixth annual dinner of the Logic Club of Instruction will be held at the Criterion , Piccadilly , on Good Friday , at 6 p . m . precisely . The chair will be occupied by Bro . John Maclean , Preceptor , and the opportunity will be taken to present to the respected Deputy Preceptor , Bro . G . E . Fairchild , P . M ., a testimonial in recognition of his valuable services and long connection with the Club .

A new battle shi p was launched at Pembroke Dockyard on Tuesday afternoon , the ceremony of christening being performed by Lady George Hamilton , wife of Bro . Lord George Hamilton , M . P ., First Lord of Ihe Admiralty , in the presence of several thousand people , The huge war vessel , which is named the Nile , is a sister ship to the Trafalgar , launched last year , the two being the heaviest English war vessels afloat .

According to the Berlin Correspondent of ihe Standard , the total of the late Emperor ' s savings does not exceed 50 , 000 , 000 marks , or about 2 ^ millions sterling , the greater portion of which will go to increase the general funds of the Crown , while the bulk of the rest vy ill be divided between the Empress Augusta and his two children , the present Emperor Frederick and the Grand Duchess ot Baden .

for their departed brother , the Kaiser Wilhelm . The most distinguished members of the Craft , from all parts of Germany , came to Berlin for the occasion . In the centre of the Temple stood a ^ coffin , on which lay the Three Roses , and the ceremony was carried out according to due Masonic rites . Professor Wagner , a well-known Conservative , delivered a most excellent and impressive address .

The Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Pennsylvania held their 42 nd annual council at Erie , Pa ., on Wednesday , the 15 th February last . Comp . C . Francis , M . I . G . M ., presided . There was a numerous attendance , and the annual report was more than usually

by the executors , 011 the 15 th instant , the personalty being sworn at upwards of £ 324 , 000 . The Queen has signified her intention of presenting annually a cup of the value of £ 100 , to be competed for by yachts at the regatta of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club in August .

The Lady Christian Maule , sister of the late Bro . the Earl of Dalhousie , known also as Bro . Lord Panmure , who fcr many years was Deputy G . Master of England , died at her residence , Park House , Wimbledon , on the 21 st instant , in the S . i , rd year of her age .

The first number of its second volume—that for January of the current year—augurs well for the further continuance of this wellconducted journal , which we hope to have the opportunity of reading for many a long day . Lord Stalbridge presided at the 19 th annual general meeting , held at Willis ' s Rooms , St .

James's , on the 22 nd instant , of the Society for Organising Charitable Relief and Repressing Mendicity . The receipts during the past year vvere £ 18 , 178 , of which £ 11 , 520 had been expending in making inquiries and affording relief , and the rest in office expenses and salaries . The report was adopted .

On Saturday last was laid in the grave in the cemetery at Rye the remains of probably the oldest Freemason in the kingdom , Bro . Charles Fletcher , who died at the advanced age of 95 . His connection with the Brotherhood had lasted from January 16 th , 1824 , until his death . He retained his faculties nearly till the end , and when 93 years of ' age walked to the poll to record his parliamentary vote .

The Fancy Dress Ball of the Holborn Cycling Club , of which Bro . Col . Duncan , C . B ., is President , was held on Thursday , the 21 st instant , at Freemasons' Hall . Nearly 250 persons vvere present , consisting of a great many brethren and their friends . The M . C . ' s were Bros . F . Jackson and C H . Princess Christian gave the last of her winter dinners to the poor children of Windsor on Tuesday , when nearly 200 boys and girls vvere entertained with soup bread , and jam pudding , her Royal Highness being assisted by the Mayor and Vicar and others .
