Election Of Grand Treasurer.
ELECTION OF GRAND TREASURER .
Wc , the undersigned , have heard xvith concern that there is an intention on the part of some of our London Brethren to propose a new Candidate for election to the ofiice of Grand Treasurer in March next , and to folloiv the same course in succeeding years . It appears to us that such a proceeding is very undesirable . The present Grand Treasurer , Bro . J . D .
ALLCROFT ( xvho xvas elected in April last ) , is a Brother xvho commands the good opinion of all ; he is a man of good means and position , lias been a most liberal contributor to our Charities , and has not only the leisure but the inclination also to assist in their work . The Grand Treasurer is cx-officio a Trustee , and as such a member of all our Charity Committees . We think this a
great advantage xvhen such Officer xvill attend , and xve need hardly urge that it xvould be most unxvise to remove a brother from his office just at thc time xvhen he has made himself thoroughly qualified to perform its duties ; and surely nothing can be more important than that xve should hax * c brethren of position taking an active share in the management of our Charities .
We xvould further urge that it is very undesirable that a yearly canvass should be made , that the Cratt should be divided into parties , and nexv elements of discord introduced by thc efforts of different sections to secure the election of their particular Candidate . In no other instance in Masonry is it usual or xvould it be considered advantageous to change thc Treasurer every
year . Wc desire to express a very decided opinion that it is improper as xvell as impolitic for any section of Grand Lodge to call upon any brother to pledge himself that , if elected , he xvill only serve for one year ; and xve deprecate thc splitting up of thc Craft , xvhich must inevitably arise if such a course of action is pursued . Wc by no means desire to keep any such Officers in place
for a long series of years , because xve believe that it is good to have fresh Mood , xvliich is alxvays to be found xvhen the necessity for it arises ; but xve do think * it is desirable that the Grand Treasurer should hold oilice for , at any rale , a fexv years ; and xve believe that it xvill be found that , as it has been heretofore , so it xvill in the future , be to thc advantage ot thc Craft and o { its Charities .
It is clearly to be understood that xve havc no party motive . Wc disclaim , wholly and entirely , anything approaching party action ; our object is solely thc xvelfarc of the Craft generally , xvhich should be , and is , thc chief consideration of every good Mason . Wc have learned that Bro . J . D . ALLCROFT xvill accept the ofiice if elected ; but it must be understood that he
docs not come forward of his oxvn accord , but is recommended by us . Personally he is unknoxvn to many of us ; but , believing him to be a thoroughly good man for thc oilice , and because he has already held it for nearly a year , xve have determined for thc reasons given to support him ; and wc earnestly beg all those xvho have thc interests of thc Craft solely at heart to help us in our exertions . Any Brethren entitled to a scat in Grand Lodge , xvho
¦ nay think it right to assist us in xvhat xve believe to be a good xvork , xvill oblige by xvriting to Bro . FRANK RICHARDSON , 28 , Golden-square , \ V ., and inform him of theit intention to support Hro . J . D . ALLCROFT ; and , if they think proper , also to authorize Bro . FRANK RICHARDSON to append their names to thc above , in conjunction xvith thc folloxving Members of Grand Lodge . London , 27 th November , 1 SS 3 .

ACCOMMODATION OF MEMBERS OF GRAND LODGE . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , — Bro . Letchxvorth is , no doubt , actuated by thc best motives xvhen he introduces his scheme , xvliich appeared in last xveck ' s issue , for remedying the ovcrcroivdingat Grand Lodge ; but when hestates that Wardens have not acquired
the knowledge or experience possessed by those xvho till or have filled the Master ' s chair , and that inconsequence they should not be allowed to enter should there be present an excess of Masters and P . M . s , I fancy he cannot havc visited those lodges xvhere I hax * e found Masters incapable of even going through one ceremony , having to vacate their chair to some brother who is acquainted with the duties ; others again who , although able to get through the lirst and
second , cannot attempt thc third , and cither stop axvay or vacate for some one xvho is able . Is a Warden to journey from a distance and then have to give xvay to such an experienced Master ? Wardens are told to attend the Quarterly Communications ; but if they , on account of their "xvant of experience , " & c , arc to be liable to be shut out for the benefit of such Masters as I have quoted , they had better stay
axvay altogether , and thereby lose the chance of gaining the experience to be acquired at Grand Lodge . Would it not be better , for Grand Lodge to be called at say 5 for 6 , or 6 for 7 p . m ., and for the brethren to be able to get their bones as soon as they present themselves , and then to take their place in Grand Lod ge xvhere they pleased so that lirst come lirst served shall hold good in their cases '
and if they do not care to enter so early they then take their chance of getting a place ? The fault lies in the system of not issuing the passes till it is nearly time to begin , xvhercby there is much crowding and inconvenience . A proper system xvill remove that , and brethren will not leave it till thc last moment if really anxious to be present . —Yours fraternally and faithfully , s . W
