Scribe E ., should be so addressed , instead of South Charlotte-street , as formerly .

A great attraction at the Marlowe matinee will be the appearance of Mdme . Bernhardt ( if health permits ) as the reciter of verses by M . Richepin . Mr . J . T . Grein , acting for the Committee , conducted negotiations with the famous artiste , and received from her communications which exhibited much interest in the object of the performance .

Bismarck s sanctum at Fnednchsruh is a good-sized square apartment communicating with his bedroom and dressing-room . Lyte remarks , probably this record cannot be beaten in Freemasonry " around the globe . ' ' —Keystone .

Mr . George Alexander will shortly give a " copyright " performance of Mr . Haddon Chambers' new play , by-andby to be brought out at the Avenue . The Gaiety Company ( with Mr . Russell Rosse as business manager ) will start touring on July 28 th , at the Theatre Royal , Brighton , previous to their visit to America and Australia . Following Brighton , a fortnight ' s engagement will be played at the Grand Theatre , Islington .

St . Jude ' s , South Kensington , still maintains its honourable position at the head of the list of Hospital Sunday contributions , Prebendary Forrest ' s Church having given £ 1238 , a sum more than £ 20 in excess of its last year ' s record . As an exercise in the virtue of Christian humility one may , however , remind St . Jude ' s that it is possible that the smaller contributions of other less wealthy congregations may , perhaps , represent a not less meritorious sum total of generosity and self-denial .

Bro . H . Robertson , P . G . M . of Canada , says : " We notice that the Grand Master of Nova Scotia laid the corner-stone of the new bank of Nova Scotia at Amherst , at the request of the authorities of that institution . This action is open to criticism . - A bank is not an edifice appropriated to

religious , educational , charitable , or Masonic purposes , nor is it a building belonging to the public in any way . We think it would be well to draw the line somewhere , and we have always und : rstood that private buildings should not be honoured in this way . " —Keystone .

What Bro . John Hare will celebrate ( privately ) on Saturday is not ( as some people appear to have supposed ) the exact anniversary of his first appearance on the stage , but simply the recent completion of his 25 years' connection with the profession . I he event will be regarded very sympathetically by all playgoers , for Bro . Hare has been , for many years , not only a great public favourite , but always and in the first place an artist—willing to take , when

necessary , the smallest roles , and to make of them the best that thought and skill could accomplish . Others have equalled Bro . Hare in careful attention to detail , but none have surpassed him in crispness , incisiveness , and general finish of style . 'There is a class of part in Avhich he surpasses all his brethren—the class of which the old lord in a "A Quiet Rubber " and the genial philanthropist in "A Pair of Spectacles" are excellent examples .

Madame Nordica , the prima donna , is an American by birth , and is known off the stage as Mrs . Lilian Norton Gower . She received most of her musical education in Boston , and when at last she paid the regulation visit to Italy there was comparatively little left for her to learn . It was in Italy that she made her debut on the stage , but her hrst success was scored in Russia . 'The late Czar

Alexander 11 . was a devout admirer of Madame Nordica ' s voice , and attended nearly every performance at the Opera House in which Madame Nordica sang . He had heard her sing only a day or two before his assassination . From St . Petersburg Madame Nordica went to Paris , where she carried all before her by her . Marguerite . Gounod , the composer of the opera ^ caught the prevailing enthusiasm , and voted Madame Nordica one of the best Marguerites he had heard .

It is gratifying to observe that there was no loss of interest this year in the ceremony of distributing the prizes to the children attending the Masonic Female Orphan School , Ballsbridge , which took place at the Leinster Hall , Dublin , in the presence of a large and fashionable assemblage . From the report we learn that the Institution is in a very satisfactory condition , continuing to be successfully maintained the

. During past year the t . umber of pupils on the roll Avas 7 6 . Ihe income amounted to £ 2462 13 s . id ., but it is stated that the subscriptions are below what they ought to be considering the number of Irish lodges , chapters , and preceptones . ' the cause of Charity is one that always appeals with peculiar warmth to the brethren , and we are certain the state of affairs only requires to be mentioned to be remedied . While on this subject we notice that the

Boys School , \ yhich has been prepared for the reception of 60 pupils , is burdened with a debt of £ 500 The Honorary Secretaries of both schools have issued a joint appeal to Irish Freemasons to help in getting rid of this pecuniary load before the end of the year , and there ought not to be much difficulty in realising this . The Institutions are doing a noble work , and it is to be hoped they will long continue to flourish , ¦
