Excelsior Lodge , No . 226 . The installation m : eting of the above lodge took place on Friday , the 19 th ult ., at Freemasons' Hall , Plumstead , ar . d was a very pretty and pleasant exposuion of the favour in which the Degree is held in the locality . Bro . F . Reed , W . AL , P . P . A . G . D . C , opened the ludge , and the usual preliminaries having b :: cn carried our , Bro . James Farrier , S . VV ., VV . M . elect , was presented to the W . M . to receive at his hands the benefit of installation , and in due couise and wilh the usuil ceermony , Bro . Fanier
was placed in the chair of A . and saluted . He appointed and invested his olliceis as follows : Bros . Kredeiick Reed , I . P . M . ; Edivin B . Hobson , S . VV . ; George II . Porter , J . VV . ; George Kennedy , P . M ., P . G . R . M ., Sec . ; Chas . Coupland , P . M ., P . S . G . W ., Treas . ; Chas . H . Canning , M . O . ; Win . John Cro . vdy , S O . ; Richard Fowler , J . O . ; James Wheatley , R . M . ; Gcoige F . 'Taylor , S . D . ; Jos . D . Brooks , J . D . ; John
Sanderson , D . C ; William Chambers , A . D . C ; George Willcock Townsend , I . G . ; Wi . liam Lawson and Henry Jacobs , Stwds . ; and Charles Warren , Tyler . Bro Reed was highly complimented on his excellent working of the installation ceremony . Of course it was his first attempt , and therefore might be improved on with practice , but he was cordially thanked and presented with a Past Master ' s jewel , tor which he returned thanks .
Ihe banquet was served at Bro . VV . Chambeis' comfortable hostelry , the Star and Garter Hotel , Powis-strcet , Woolwich , and was much enjoyed . Among the other brethren present were Bros . Captain G . Spinks , P . M ., P . P . A . G . D . C ; VV . Moulds , P . M ., P . P . G . D . C ; C Jolly , P . M ., P . M . 309 , P . P . G . D . ; J . Warren , P . M . ; J . Roberts , P . M ., P . P . G . S . B . ; Gir ' . aml , S . I Won , S . D . 44 ; and others .
The usual loyal and Grand Mark lodge toasts were duly honoured , and Bro . C . Jolly lesponded for " The Prov . Grand Oflicers , Present and Past , " congratulating them upon having such an excellent Mason and gentleman as Bio . Vis .-ount Dangaivan to preside over them as their chief in the province , lie also spoke enthusiastically of the long and valued services rendered by their esteemed D . P . G . M ., Bro . Rev . Hajman Cummings , M . A ., P . G . Chap . England , & c , and prophciej that under the ni ' e of those emin ; nt brethren , the Mark Degree would increase and prosper more than ever in the Province cf Kent .
Ihe I . P . M ., in proposing the toast of " The Worshipful Master , " said he d ! d not intend to trouble them with a long speech , but he could not help saying that it was with very great pleasure he lose to propose the In ist , more especially because he knew they weie aware that in liro . Fanicr they had a goeil VV . M ., and one that would dn credit to the lodge . Bro . Farrier had worked well and worthily in the junior offices he had filled , and in 1 is hands the lodge would go on and prose er .
Bro . Farrier , in response to a very flattering reception , said he thanked them most heartily for their exceedingly kind reci ption of the toast , and could assure them that he should always endeavour to emulate the splendid working of his predtc .-ssors . He only wanted work , good candidates , and the assistance of his oflicers an 1 the Past Misters , and then , if he ha-1 that , it would be his own fault if he did not handover to his successor the lodge , even , if possible , more successful than when he took over the responsibilities of his present high and important ollice .
livo . Reed , in responding toaheaity reception ci his name as "The Installing Ofiicer and the- Past Masters" said he had rather a strong fieling that it was the duty of a W . M . to install his successor , and in continuation of the response for the Past Masters , congratulated the W . M . upon having such excellent Past Masters to support him . He trusted that the VV . M . would be mere successful than he had been in getting candidates . Unfortunately , he himself lived at a distance from the ludtie , and that , no doubt ,
millitated against his chance of getting candidates , but their VV . iVl . lived in the neighbourhood where he was well known and respected , and wheie his civic and parochial life biought him in . communication with many excellent Masons , who were stamped witn " the mark , " and whom , no doubt , he would be able to introduce to the lodge during his year of oflice . I Ie trusted it would be so , and that Ilro . Farrier ' s year would be a record one in the annals of the Excelsior Lodge .
Bros . Spinks , Moulds , Kennedy , Jolly , Warren , and Roberts , also responded . Bro . Hoiton responded for " The Visitors , " and Bros . Hobson , Porter , and Crowdy for "The Officers . ' * 'Ihe singing of Bros . Hobson , Spinks , Kennedy ( Craft ) , and Crowdy , was much admired .
