lodge . The conclusion of ( he installation vvas the occasion for hearty and prolorged applause . In due course the R . W , Prov . G . Master proposed a vote ot thanks to the Installing Master for the very able manner in which the work of installation had been performed . During his year of office the Past Master had been most popular , and in saying this he was only expressing the opinion of
all the brethren . He might say that they vvere all fond of him . lt vvas with preat pleasure that he witnessed the carrjing out of this ceremony , and a greater compliment could not have been paid than that of asking him to present to the Past Master a jewel , to commemorate his successfulyearof office . He knew how well and how thoroughly Bro . Dix ; had carried out-the duties , and this had been
reported to himself by the Deputy Prov . Grand Master , and every brother of the lodge spoke of Bro , Dix , as Worshiped Master , in the kindest andbest terms . The highest compliment they could pay him , in the first instance , vvas to elect him as W . M ., and the next highest was to present him with a Past Master ' s jewel , as he , lhe P . G . M ., had now the honour of doing , in testimony of regard , and for
the admirable way in which he conducted the business of his lodfce . The Past Master had well merited the jewel , and might he live long to wear it . The P . G . M . said he had the pleasure and honour of wearing a similar jewel , which was presented to him thirty years ago by the brethren of the Silurian Lodge . 1 hirty years vvas a long time to look back , yet he hoped that the Great Architect vvould
spare Bro . Dix more than thirty years as an honoured member of that lodge . He would ever remember and carry with him the good feeling displayed by every member of the Craft in that town , and those who came after him would also know how much he had done for the success of the Order whilst Master of this lodge . In thus giving expression to his feelings he had not said one word of compliment
more than Bro . Dix deserved . In response , Bro . Dix said it vvas quite cut of his power lo express his feelings for the kindness exhibited towards him during the past year , and now for the crowning act in presenting him with a beautiful Past Master's jewel . When he vvas installed into the chair of King Solomon he had some misgivings as to how he should acquit
himself during his year of office . They knew that "it was the hope of reward that sweetened labour , " but he did not anticipate that the hope vvould eventuate in a jewel . He did , however , foster the hope that the brethren would give him credit for doing his best to carry out the duties of the office . He could assure them that it had been to him a labour of love . When installed into the chair he
promised that he vvould try to attend two or three lodge meetings , but he was glad to say that he had not missed one , and in order to be present at his lodge he had travelled , in addition to his ordinary journeys , upwards of 780 miles . He had tried his utmost during the past year to perform the duties of his office to the satisfaction of the brethren . He entered the chair with a considerable amount
of trembling , but he vacated it with pleasurable recollections that would last during the remainder of his life . He hoped that his successor in the chair vvould have an equally pleasurable year of office . He again thanked the brethren for their very valuable present . As yet he had scarcely seen it , to-morrow he should gloat over it , and everywhere he went should show it as an emblem of their regard . He
promised that so long as he vvas spared he should wear it with as much pleasure as he now received it , and vvould preserve it to his children , who would know thereby that their father was presented with the jewel at the termination of his year of office . It now came his turn to make a litile presentation on his own account . All the brethren of the lodge had evinced kindness and consideration towards
him , for which he tendered his thanks , but there vvas one brother who had been more especially kind in assisting him , and that vvas Past Master E . W . Evans . He felt bound to make him some slight recognition of his services , and , therefore asked him to accept a portrait of himself . ( The portrait was an enlarged photo ., beautifully executed , in massive gilt frame . )
Bro . Evans , in accepting the gift , said that he vvas taken completely by surprise . He had only done his duty in rendering any assistance to Bro . Dix , and whatever he had done , it had afforded him pleasure . His services vvould always be devoted to the welfare of the lodge . The newly-installed Master then proceeded to invest his officers for the ensuing year , the list being as follows : Bros
Walter J . Dix , I . P . M . ; J . C . Brook , S W . ; Henry Allen , J . W . ; J . Sanders , P . M ., Treas . ; Rev . D . Wilks , Chap . ; VV . J . HcIIingdale , Sec . ; H . Richards , D . C . ; E . after which the brethren repaired to the Westgate Hotel , where a sumptuous banquet had been laid by Bro . Dean . A numerous company assembled under the presidency of Bro . Charles Cullum , the VV . M ., who vvas supported right and left by the Provincial Grand Officers and leading members of the Craft from various lodges of the district . The post-prandial proceedings vvere of an harmonious and pleasurable character .

Dix during his year of office as an expounder of the rites and ceremonies of Masonry have gained for him a fame far beyond the limits of his own
Craft Masonry.
C . ; E . Fletcher , Tyler . The business of the lodge vvas speedily brought to a close ,
after which the brethren repaired to the Westgate Hotel , where a sumptuous banquet had been laid by Bro . Dean . A numerous company assembled under the presidency of Bro . Charles Cullum , the VV . M ., who vvas supported right and left by the Provincial Grand Officers and leading members of the Craft from various lodges of the district . The post-prandial proceedings vvere of an harmonious and pleasurable character .
