MASONIC AND GENERAL TIDINGS

Bro . the Earl of Jersey has let his town house , No . 3 , Great Stanhope-street , to Mr . Hanbtiry , of Pontypool , for the next five years . A charter of incorporation has been granted to the town of Richmond ( Surrey ) , which will henceforth possess a Mayor , Aldermen , and Council .

The Queen has forwarded , through her private Secretary , her annual subscription of £ 50 to the Army and Navy Pensioners' Employment Society , of which she is a patron . The Fifteen Sections will be worked at the Prosperity Lodge of Instruction , No . 65 , at the City Arms Restaurant , St . Mary Axe , E . C , on Wednesday , the 29 th inst ., at seven o'clock p . m .

The Duke of Clarence and Avondale arrived at Marlborough House from Scotland on Friday , the 17 th instant , and the day following left for Sandringham , where he arrived in the afternoon . Bro . the Duke of Fife has lately disposed of one of his outlying properties near Elgin to Sheriff Black , the price paid for the land being considerable in consequence of its beautiful position and surroundings .

In recognition of the donation of £ 50 presented some short time back by the German Emperor to the Royal Sailors ' Home at Portsmouth , the Committee have named two of the cabins " Kaiser William " and " Hohenzollern . " Saturday , the ist prox ., has been appointed as the day for closing the French Exhibition at West Brompton , and it is estimated that over a million and a quarter of people have visited the show . A German exhibition will be held next year .

Sir John Stainer presided on Monday evening at Prince ' s Hall , Piccadilly , at the presentation of prizes to the pupils who successfully passed the Trinity College ( London ) examinations , there being present a large muster of students and their friends .

The annual show of chrysanthemums in the Inner Temple Gardens was opened to the public on Monday , and has remained open during the whole of the present week . The show , which numbers about Soo plants , does great credit to Mr . Newton , the Temple gardener .

The Duke and Duchess of Connaught have promised their patronage to a bazaar , which is to be held at Southampton , for the purpose of liquidating the debt on the Artillery Volunteers head-quarters . Their Royal Highnesses have sent a donation to the fund .

A marriage has been arranged between the Hon . Dudley Leigh , eldest surviving son and heir of Bro . Lord Leigh , Prov . Grand Master of Warwickshire , and an American lady , Miss Beckwilt , who was the guest of Mr . and Mrs . Bradley-Martin during the past season .

The Princess of Wales , accompanied by her daughters , the Princesses Victoria and Maud , reached Sandringham Hall on the evening of the 16 th instant , and will remain for the winter season . It is expected that the Prince of Wales vvill join their Royal Highnesses on his return from the continent .

Bro . Jackson , M . P ., Financial Secretary to the Treasury , accompanied by his private Secretary , left London towards the close of last week for the purpose of paying a second visit to Ireland . He has made his way to the congested districts in the VVest with a view to finally examining the proposals for constructing light railways in that part of the country .

lt is announced that a marriage is in contemplation between the Hon . A . E . Harbord , second son of Bro . Lord Suffield , and Miss Dorothy A . Musgrave , eldest daughter ofthe late Bro . Sir Richard Musgrave , Bart ., of Eden Hall . A marriage has also been arranged , and will shortly take place , between Mr . F . G . Brenton and Miss Alice Puleston , second daughter of Bro . Sir John Puleston , M . P .

The Empress of Austria arrived at Mentone on Sunday on board her steam-yacht the Chazalie . On Monday her Majesty left for San Remo , where she visited the Villa Ziris , at which the late Emperor Frederick resided during his illness . She afterwards visited the Grand Duke ol Tuscany , and in the evening went on board her yacht , which had come round from Mentone , and proceeded to Genoa .

Sir Richard Burton , British Consul at Trieste since 1 S 72 , died in that city on Monday morning in the 6 9 th year of his age . The deceased was among the most famous of our African explorers and a great Oriental scholar , and in addition had seen considerable service under the late Bro . General Sir Charles Napier , and during the Crimean war . He had not been in robust health for a long time , but his death vvas not expected .

The Prince of Wales , accompanied by Colonel Clarke , Mr . Phipps , the British Charge d'Affairs , and Mr . Grant Duff , of the Embassy , visited the quarters of the Volunteer Salvage Society , being conducted over it by the three founders . His Royal Highness expressed great admiration

at what he saw , and was presented vvith the medal of the society . On Sunday last , at the Palace of Schonbrunn , the Emperor Francis Joseph gave a dinner party in honour of his Royal Highness , at which the Archduke William , Count Kalnoky , Count Degin , Austrian Ambassador to Great Britain , and other distinguished personages were present .

THE GREAT CITV LODGE ( NO . 1426 ) . —Our attention has been called , on behalf of the VV . M ., Bro . C T . Smith , of Chatham , and his numerous friends in that town who attended his installation in the above lodge on the nth inst ., to a printer ' s error in our notice of the meeting which appeared in our last issue , and to which the persons concerned attach some importance . representative attendance of the Royal Kent Lodge of Antiquity , No . 20 , Chatham , to witness the installation of their much respected fellow townsman is naturally valued by both the recipient and the members of that lodge , and we are therefore asked by our contributor to state that the number " 20 , Chatham , " should have been printed after their names in the report referred to instead of 3 S .

The British Training Squadron left Gibraltar on the 17 th inst . for Mogador , and after a short stay there vvill proceed to Spithead . Bro . the Duke and Duchess of Fife ( Princess Louise of Wales ) are expected to arrive shortly at Castle Rising , Norfolk , for the winter season .

According to the latest accounts from Teheran , the health of Bro . Sir H . Drummond Wolff has slightly improved , but his condition is still regarded as critical . On Saturday last the Duke of Cambridge paid an official visit to Chatham for the purpose of inspecting- the troops of the division under the command of General Goodenough .

The Earl of Lathom Lodge of Instruction meets on Wednesdays at the Joiner ' s Arms , Denmark-hill , S . E ., at S p . m ., instead of Station Hotel , Camberwell New-road , as hitherto . The marriage of Lady Louise de Vere Beauclerk , daughter of Bro . the Duke ancl Duchess of St . Albans , vvith Bro . Gerald Loder , M . P . for Brighton , will be solemnised to-morrow ( Saturday ) .

The annual meeting of the Dartmouth Lodge vvas held at the Masonic Hall , Edward-street , on the 15 th instant , when Bro . the Rev . VV . F . Bradley was installed Worshipful Master for the year . In the evening the annual banquet vvas held .

Bro . the Right Hon . Admiral Lord Alcester , G . C . B ., Senior Grand Warden , is on a visit to Bro . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Prov . G . M . Cornwall , and attended the unveiling of the National Armada Memorial on Plymouth Hoe on Tuesday .

The Newcastle Leader says the city of Adelaide , in South Australia , claims possession of the " first Methodist minister who has risen to the dignity of a Worshipful Master of a Masonic lodge . " This is Bro . the Rev . G . E . Rowe , who has just been recently elected to the office .

Some of the fruit that was recently exhibited at the Fruiterers' Exhibition in the Guildhall having been forwarded to the Oueen at Balmoral by Bro . Alderman Sir James Whitehead , Bart ., her Majesty has been pleased to express her admiration of the specimens presented to her .

Grand Master of Inverness , on the 23 rd inst ., and on the same day he installed the newly-appointed Grand Master Mason of Ross and Cromarty , Bro . Sir Hector Monro , of Foulis , Bart .

Bro . Lord Mayor Sir H . A . Isaacs and the Lady Mayoress gave a grand ball at the Mansion House on Wednesday evening to the Mayors and Provosts of the United Kingdom and their ladies . The guests present included 171 English and three Irish Mayors , 11 Scotch Prcvosts , and 22 Town Clerks , vvith their wives .

On Wednesday a collection was simultaneously made at every hotel and tavern frequented by commercial travellers in aid of the Commercial Travellers' School at Pinner . The yearly meeting of the Metropolitan members was held at the Saracen ' s Head , Snow Hill , and it augured well for the collection elsewhere that the sum of X * 6 i was collected in the

room . Sir Julian Goldsmid , Bart , M . P ., Sir A . E . Miller , Q . C , Mr . E . Ford North , and others are patrons of a grand ball to be given on December 2 nd , at the Holborn Town Hall , on behalf of the Royal Free Hospital , Gray ' s Inn-road . Mr . J . T . Balls , 262 , Gray's Inn-road , is Hon . Treasurer , and Mr . VV . H . Brinklovv Hon . Secretary of the Organizing Committee .

A successful concert vvas given at the Victoria Hall , Dundee , on Friday evening , the 17 th instant , in aid of the Scottish Masonic Benevolent Fund . The Countess of Jersey , Bro . Lord and Lady Kennedy , and . others were present , and a very full programme vvas admirably carried out . The concert was under the auspices of the lodge in Dundee , and great credit is due to Bros . Brodie , R . W . M ., and Dr . Calross , Secretary , for their arrangements .

The Queen of Roumania intended paying a visit to . the interesting old mansion of Plus Coch , Anglesea , the residence of Colonel Hunter , High Sheriff of the county , and Mrs . Hunter . The visit , however , had to be put off owing to the illness of General Graciano . Bro . Col . Hunter is Past P . G . M . Aberdeenshire East , and Prov . Grand Mark Master of North Wales .

A public meeting vvas held in Belfast on Friday , the 17 th inst ., at which the Mayor presided , and there weie present a large attendance of Ulster merchants and other interested persons . A scheme was submitted for constructing a channel tunnel 33 miles long between Mayer Island , County Antrim , and Wigtownshire , the greatest depth being soo feet , and the steepest gradient one in 75 .

Woodhouse and Kawson , Limited , held their annual meeting at Winchester House , Old Broad-street , on the 10 th inst . The report presented was a most satisfactory one . After paying a dividend at the rate of S per cent , per annum on the preference shares , and 15 per cent , per annum on the ordinary shares , the sum of £ 25 , 000 was carried to the reserve fund . This speaks well for the management as well as for the future prospects of electric enterprise .

The South Australian I'rcemason states : " Invitations have been , by instructions of the M . W . the Grand Master , forwarded to the Grand Masters and Grand Officers of New South Wales , Victoria , and Tasmania to be present at the ceremony of laying the corner-stone of St . Peter ' s

Lord Herschell has accepted the presidency of the Sunday School Union , thus following in interest in Sunday schools his predecessors in the Lord Chancellorship . The Mercers' Company have made a grant of £ 21 to the Prize Fund of the Society of Arts' examinations , to which fund the Clothmakers' Company had previously contributed a sum oi £ 21 .

Comps . VV . C . Johns , T . Brakenridge , and J . Allinson were installed M . E . Z ., IT ., and J . respectively of the Sun , Square , and Compasses Chapter , No . 119 , Whitehaven , on the 17 th instant . On Thursday , the 15 th inst ., H . R . H . the Duchess of Fife and Bro . the Duke of Fife visited Drury Lane to see "A Million of Money , " and on Friday H . R . H . the Duke of Edinburgh ancl suite honoured the same theatre vvith his presence .

Bro . Robert Dawson , Assistant Secretary of the Board of Agriculture , lately private Secretary to the President , the Right Hon . Henry Chaplain , M . P ., vvas exalted in the Covent Garden Chapter , No . 1 G 14 , on Thursday , the 16 th instant .

In connection with the recent postal jubilee a special effort has been made to increase the means at the disposal of the Rowland Hill Benevolent Fund . The amount collected is very considerable , and the future of the fund is certainly brightening .

Her Majesty the Oueen has been pleased to accept the dedication of the "Ancient Vellum Book" of the Honourable Artillery Company , which has been printed by order of the Court of Assistants , and edited by Lieutenant-Colonel G . A . Raikes , F . S . A .

The Baroness Burdett-Coutts and Mrs . VV . H . Collingridge laid the memorial-stones of the Extension Wings of the Printers' Almshouses at VVood Green on Saturday last in the presence of a large body of friends and supporters of the institution . In the course of the proceedings Mrs . W . H . Collingridge handed to the Secretary a cheque from an anonymous donor for £ 1000 towards the erection and endowment of the new buildings , while other donations and subscriptions were announced to the extent of X *? 700 .

M ., has accepted the invitation of the American National Horse Show Association to visit New York and judge the animals which will be exhibited at the show to be held in that city next month Bro . Burdett-Coutts will cross in the Teutonic , which sails on the 29 th instant , and vvill be back in timefor the opening of Parliament .

It has just been decided that the new musical extravaganza—music by Mr . Ivan Caryll and libretto by " Richard Henry "—announced as in contemplation for production by Mr . Horace Sedger next Easter—vvill not now be produced till far later in iSgt . It may be mentioned that the libretto —which will be " quite English" —will be based ( by arrangement ) upon an unpublished French piece written by the well-known romancist and playwright , M . George Duval , of Paris .

The long-promised " Life and Diaries of E . L . Blanchard " will , it is hoped , be published before Christmas . The Diaries , we understand , though not elaborate , are suggestive , and have been interestingly annotated . Mr . Clement Scott , the editor of the work , vvill contribute an introduction tothe memoir and various personal recollections of his deceased friend . He has been largely assisted in the preparation of the work by Mr . Cecil Howard , Mr . Scott ' s former colleague in the editorship of the Theatre .

I he last nights of " A Village Priest " are announced at the Haymarket , where Mr . Tree will reproduce the successful drama "Called Back" on Monday , November 10 th , after which date it vvill be continued in the regular bill , except on Monday evenings . Messrs . VV . E . Henley and

Robert Louis Stevenson ' s comedy " Beau Austin , " which vvill be produced on Monday , November 3 rd , vvill be repeated on Monday , November 17 th . In addition to the artistes already named , Mr . H . Eversfield and Mr . E . W . Lawson vvill play in this piece .

Bro . W . Harris Saunders , P . M ., has written calling attention to the omission of the motions of which he has given notice from the advertised announcements in the Times , & c , of the meeting- of the Quarterly General Court of the Boys' School on Friday ^ the 31 st instant . Possibly the spirit of economy may have had something to

do with this , but , whatever the reason , we do not think that Bro . Saunders ' s proposals vvill suffer by the omission . They are included in the circular notices of the business to be transacted , so that every Governor and Subscriber who is interested either in their success or defeat vvill find them set forth in full in the agenda .

At the regimental dinner of the Hussars of the Body Guard at Potsdam on Tuesday night , at which the Emperor William and the Duke of Connaught were present , his Majesty proposed the health of the Royal visitor , whom he eulogised as a capable and experienced British officer , adding that the Duke as a Prussian officer displayed the same capacity which distinguished him as a British soldier .

The Emperor congratulated himself that his grandfather had appointed the Dukeof Connaught chief of the renowned Zieten Hussars . The Duke , in reply , thanked the Emperor , and . testifying to his appreciation of the honour conferred upon him by the late Emperor William , assured those present that he was proud of wearing the uniform of the Zieten Regiment .

The British Training Squadron left Gibraltar on the 17 th inst . for Mogador , and after a short stay there vvill proceed to Spithead . Bro . the Duke and Duchess of Fife ( Princess Louise of Wales ) are expected to arrive shortly at Castle Rising , Norfolk , for the winter season .

According to the latest accounts from Teheran , the health of Bro . Sir H . Drummond Wolff has slightly improved , but his condition is still regarded as critical . On Saturday last the Duke of Cambridge paid an official visit to Chatham for the purpose of inspecting- the troops of the division under the command of General Goodenough .

The Earl of Lathom Lodge of Instruction meets on Wednesdays at the Joiner ' s Arms , Denmark-hill , S . E ., at S p . m ., instead of Station Hotel , Camberwell New-road , as hitherto . The marriage of Lady Louise de Vere Beauclerk , daughter of Bro . the Duke ancl Duchess of St . Albans , vvith Bro . Gerald Loder , M . P . for Brighton , will be solemnised to-morrow ( Saturday ) .

The annual meeting of the Dartmouth Lodge vvas held at the Masonic Hall , Edward-street , on the 15 th instant , when Bro . the Rev . VV . F . Bradley was installed Worshipful Master for the year . In the evening the annual banquet vvas held .

Bro . the Right Hon . Admiral Lord Alcester , G . C . B ., Senior Grand Warden , is on a visit to Bro . the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe , Prov . G . M . Cornwall , and attended the unveiling of the National Armada Memorial on Plymouth Hoe on Tuesday .

The Newcastle Leader says the city of Adelaide , in South Australia , claims possession of the " first Methodist minister who has risen to the dignity of a Worshipful Master of a Masonic lodge . " This is Bro . the Rev . G . E . Rowe , who has just been recently elected to the office .

Some of the fruit that was recently exhibited at the Fruiterers' Exhibition in the Guildhall having been forwarded to the Oueen at Balmoral by Bro . Alderman Sir James Whitehead , Bart ., her Majesty has been pleased to express her admiration of the specimens presented to her .

Bro . Lord Mayor Sir H . A . Isaacs and the Lady Mayoress gave a grand ball at the Mansion House on Wednesday evening to the Mayors and Provosts of the United Kingdom and their ladies . The guests present included 171 English and three Irish Mayors , 11 Scotch Prcvosts , and 22 Town Clerks , vvith their wives .

On Wednesday a collection was simultaneously made at every hotel and tavern frequented by commercial travellers in aid of the Commercial Travellers' School at Pinner . The yearly meeting of the Metropolitan members was held at the Saracen ' s Head , Snow Hill , and it augured well for the collection elsewhere that the sum of X * 6 i was collected in the

room . Sir Julian Goldsmid , Bart , M . P ., Sir A . E . Miller , Q . C , Mr . E . Ford North , and others are patrons of a grand ball to be given on December 2 nd , at the Holborn Town Hall , on behalf of the Royal Free Hospital , Gray ' s Inn-road . Mr . J . T . Balls , 262 , Gray's Inn-road , is Hon . Treasurer , and Mr . VV . H . Brinklovv Hon . Secretary of the Organizing Committee .

A successful concert vvas given at the Victoria Hall , Dundee , on Friday evening , the 17 th instant , in aid of the Scottish Masonic Benevolent Fund . The Countess of Jersey , Bro . Lord and Lady Kennedy , and . others were present , and a very full programme vvas admirably carried out . The concert was under the auspices of the lodge in Dundee , and great credit is due to Bros . Brodie , R . W . M ., and Dr . Calross , Secretary , for their arrangements .

The Queen of Roumania intended paying a visit to . the interesting old mansion of Plus Coch , Anglesea , the residence of Colonel Hunter , High Sheriff of the county , and Mrs . Hunter . The visit , however , had to be put off owing to the illness of General Graciano . Bro . Col . Hunter is Past P . G . M . Aberdeenshire East , and Prov . Grand Mark Master of North Wales .

A public meeting vvas held in Belfast on Friday , the 17 th inst ., at which the Mayor presided , and there weie present a large attendance of Ulster merchants and other interested persons . A scheme was submitted for constructing a channel tunnel 33 miles long between Mayer Island , County Antrim , and Wigtownshire , the greatest depth being soo feet , and the steepest gradient one in 75 .

Woodhouse and Kawson , Limited , held their annual meeting at Winchester House , Old Broad-street , on the 10 th inst . The report presented was a most satisfactory one . After paying a dividend at the rate of S per cent , per annum on the preference shares , and 15 per cent , per annum on the ordinary shares , the sum of £ 25 , 000 was carried to the reserve fund . This speaks well for the management as well as for the future prospects of electric enterprise .

Lord Herschell has accepted the presidency of the Sunday School Union , thus following in interest in Sunday schools his predecessors in the Lord Chancellorship . The Mercers' Company have made a grant of £ 21 to the Prize Fund of the Society of Arts' examinations , to which fund the Clothmakers' Company had previously contributed a sum oi £ 21 .

In connection with the recent postal jubilee a special effort has been made to increase the means at the disposal of the Rowland Hill Benevolent Fund . The amount collected is very considerable , and the future of the fund is certainly brightening .

Her Majesty the Oueen has been pleased to accept the dedication of the "Ancient Vellum Book" of the Honourable Artillery Company , which has been printed by order of the Court of Assistants , and edited by Lieutenant-Colonel G . A . Raikes , F . S . A .

The Baroness Burdett-Coutts and Mrs . VV . H . Collingridge laid the memorial-stones of the Extension Wings of the Printers' Almshouses at VVood Green on Saturday last in the presence of a large body of friends and supporters of the institution . In the course of the proceedings Mrs . W . H . Collingridge handed to the Secretary a cheque from an anonymous donor for £ 1000 towards the erection and endowment of the new buildings , while other donations and subscriptions were announced to the extent of X *? 700 .

The Fifteen Sections will be worked in the Israel Lodge of Instruction , No . 205 , Rising Sun , Globe-road , Mile End , on the evening of Sunday , the 26 th instant , at 6 p . m ., when brethren are cordially invited to attend . Bro . VV . Burdett-Coutts , P . M ., has accepted the invitation of the American National Horse Show Association to visit New York and judge the animals which will be exhibited at the show to be held in that city next month Bro . Burdett-Coutts will cross in the Teutonic , which sails on the 29 th instant , and vvill be back in timefor the opening of Parliament .

It has just been decided that the new musical extravaganza—music by Mr . Ivan Caryll and libretto by " Richard Henry "—announced as in contemplation for production by Mr . Horace Sedger next Easter—vvill not now be produced till far later in iSgt . It may be mentioned that the libretto —which will be " quite English" —will be based ( by arrangement ) upon an unpublished French piece written by the well-known romancist and playwright , M . George Duval , of Paris .

The long-promised " Life and Diaries of E . L . Blanchard " will , it is hoped , be published before Christmas . The Diaries , we understand , though not elaborate , are suggestive , and have been interestingly annotated . Mr . Clement Scott , the editor of the work , vvill contribute an introduction tothe memoir and various personal recollections of his deceased friend . He has been largely assisted in the preparation of the work by Mr . Cecil Howard , Mr . Scott ' s former colleague in the editorship of the Theatre .

I he last nights of " A Village Priest " are announced at the Haymarket , where Mr . Tree will reproduce the successful drama "Called Back" on Monday , November 10 th , after which date it vvill be continued in the regular bill , except on Monday evenings . Messrs . VV . E . Henley and

Robert Louis Stevenson ' s comedy " Beau Austin , " which vvill be produced on Monday , November 3 rd , vvill be repeated on Monday , November 17 th . In addition to the artistes already named , Mr . H . Eversfield and Mr . E . W . Lawson vvill play in this piece .

Bro . W . Harris Saunders , P . M ., has written calling attention to the omission of the motions of which he has given notice from the advertised announcements in the Times , & c , of the meeting- of the Quarterly General Court of the Boys' School on Friday ^ the 31 st instant . Possibly the spirit of economy may have had something to

do with this , but , whatever the reason , we do not think that Bro . Saunders ' s proposals vvill suffer by the omission . They are included in the circular notices of the business to be transacted , so that every Governor and Subscriber who is interested either in their success or defeat vvill find them set forth in full in the agenda .

At the regimental dinner of the Hussars of the Body Guard at Potsdam on Tuesday night , at which the Emperor William and the Duke of Connaught were present , his Majesty proposed the health of the Royal visitor , whom he eulogised as a capable and experienced British officer , adding that the Duke as a Prussian officer displayed the same capacity which distinguished him as a British soldier .

The Emperor congratulated himself that his grandfather had appointed the Dukeof Connaught chief of the renowned Zieten Hussars . The Duke , in reply , thanked the Emperor , and . testifying to his appreciation of the honour conferred upon him by the late Emperor William , assured those present that he was proud of wearing the uniform of the Zieten Regiment .
