The minutes of the installation meeting in February having been read and confirmed , Bro . W- E ; Peckover was passed to the Second Degree , and Bro . T . Burrell was elected a joining member . A lengthy discussion terminated in the appointment of a Committee , and a brother having been proposed as a re-joining member , the lodge was closed . The brethren then adjourned to refreshment , after which the usual list of toasts was Zone through . Bros . Page , P . M ., and Oliver , P . M ., replied for " The Visitors . "

In the course of the evening the musical brethren contributed several songs for the general entertainment . The Tyler ' s toast closed the proceedings .

The lodge having been closed , refreshment followed labour , and upon the removal of the cloth , the usual toasts received full justice . Bro . G . Ransford , P . P . G . S . B ., responded on behalf of " The Provincial Grand Officers . " The I . P . M ., in submitting the toast of "The W . M ., "congratulated the lodge upon

having so good a worker at its head as Bro . Cronin . The members who were present at the last meeting would recollect that he ( the I . P . M . ) had spoken of the exceptional manner in which the W . M . had invested his officers , and also of the self-possessed way he had proposed the numerous toasts at the installation banquet . He was pleased to see that the W . M . had sustained his reputation by carrying out the duties of the lodge that evening in a manner that left nothing to be desired .

' The W . M . having briefly replied , gave " The Visitors . " He said that the Hemming Lodge was always glad to welcome visitors , and , thinks to the nunnsr in which the funds of the lodge were dispensed bytheir genial Treasurer ( Bro . Jessett ) , ail the attention given to the wants of the visitors by their popular Wine Steward ( Bro Wheatley ) , no visitor could be otherwise than pleased with the result . This toast having been acknowledged , " The Health of the Past Masters , " coupled with the names of Bros . H . Wheatley , P . M ., and VV . Hopkins , I . P . M ., followed .

"The Treasurer and the Ofiicers "—acknowledged by Bros . Jessett , C Wheatley , and H . Gale—brought the proceedings to a conclusion .

It was proposed that a Past Master ' s jewel should be presented at the next meeting to Bro . Littler , W . M . . which was carried unanimously . The Secretary read the correspondence . The lodge was then closed .

Bro . Horrocks , I . P . M ., presided at the banquet at Freemasons' Tavern , when the usual toasts were given . "The Queen and the Craft j" "The M . W . G . M . the Prince of Wales , the Pro Grand Master , Deputy Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Ollicers , Present and Past . " Bro . Horrocks , I . P . M ., and Bro . Kiallmark responded .

The toast of " The Initiates " followed . Bro . Cranfield replied . "The Visitors , their names coupled with the sister Universities , " responded to by Bros . C . A . Cuthbert Keeson and Professor F . VV . Driver , for Oxford and Cambridge respectively .

The toast of " The 1 reasurer and Secretary " was answered only by the Secretary the Treasurer having previously left . "The Ofiicers of the Lodge" having been given , Bro . S . Hayne responded on their behalf . The Tyler ' s toast brought the evening to a close .

The brethren then adjourned to refreshment , and after dinner some very interestinir speeches were made by the visitors , descriptive of Masonic working in Africa and Burmah . There was some capital singing in the intervals .

Marcians Lodge , No . 264 S . PRESENTATION TO BRO . J . R . CLEAVE , P . M . At the first installation meeting of this lodge , held at the Trocadero Restaurant , W ., on the 25 th ultimo , ample evidence was forthcoming that a very satisfactory year ' s work had been done and that the new lodge had more than justified its existence . The members , recognising that this success was in a large measure due to the indefatigable exertions , Masonic zeal , and general popularity of the first Master , Bro . J . R . Cleave , P . P . G . D . Surrey , presented him with a miniature gold Past Master's jewel , together with a handsome set of fruit dishes for Mrs . Cleave .

Lodge was opened at an early hour owing to the heavy programme of work , and the minutes were confirmed . Bros . C . Cary , P . B . Evans , A . C . Busby , C . Busby , and G . W . Mann were raised to the Third Decree , and Bros . A . J . Heal , G . F . Muntzer , and J . F . Pollard were passed to the Second Degree . Bro . Easterbrook , acting I . P . M ., then relieved the W . M . by initiating Mr . R . A . Pollard . The lodge was then called off for well-earned light refreshment , and on resumption of business , Bro . the Rev . C . J . Smith was installed as W . M . by Bro . J . R . Cleave , who completed a good evening ' s

M ., who referred in eloquent terms to the invaluable services rendered by the I . P . M . in the formation of the lodge , and for which the jewel wasa very inadequate recognition . The gift was briefly acknowledged , and the lodge was closed . After dinner the customary toasts were given .

Bro . J . D . Langton , P . D . G . D . C , acknowledged "The Grand Olhcers , " and expressed his pride at being able to do so . He felt ' sure all the Grand Officers did their best to assist Masonry in the rapid progress they were making . As one of the Consecrating Ofiicers of the lodge , he was delighted to see the great progress made under the able rule of the first Master , Bro . Cleave . As a friend of Bro . 'Cleave ' s for some years , he knew that whatever that brother did he did thoroughly , and , therefore , when he

saw him installed he knew the first y « ar would be a success . That success seemed of such a substantial nature that it would last for many years . Mention had been mide of a matter very dear to his ( Bro . Langton ' s ) heart—lhe Centenary of the Boys' School . He understood the W . M . would represent the lodge on that occasion , and he sincerely hoped the lodge would do its best to send up a good list . Bro . Dr . Lawrence , P . G . S . B ., also replied .

"The Health of the W . M . " was given by Bro . Cleave , [ . P . M ., who said he felt it was impossible for him to do justice to the toast after the eloquent speeches with which the W . M . had commenced his year . The more they knew of Bro . Rev . C . J . Smith , the W . M ., the more they loved him . The splendid start made by the W . M . that evening was only a beginning of the admirable way in which he would preside over them . It was quite unnecessary to say anything in the W . M . ' s favour , which would be but painting the lily or gilding refined gold .

The W . M . said he appeared before them in a new character—he never thought he should appear as a lily . He saw around him many old colleagues in the hard struggle against ignorance . He saw old pjpils with whom the struggle was often harder , and it gave him the greatest pleasure to preside over a gathering containing not only those who looked upon them from an independent standpoint , but also those who were old colleagues and to meet again in those pleasant relations , many old pupils . Nothing should be wanting on his part to make the lodge flourish and to continue to carry out those great traditions which had only lasted one year .

The W . M . next proposed "The LP . M . and Installing Master . " They owed Bro . Cleave a debt of gratitude which they could never repay , but there was no member who was not anxious , as far as lay in him , to repay that debt . They were delighted to congratulate the I . P . M . on his triumphant success and the founders thought they ought to mark , in some measure , their sense of gratitude towards him . They had been privileged to partake of Bro . Cleave's hospitality , in which Mrs . Cleave had assisted , and they thought that nothing could be more pleasinjr

than to make some present to Mrs . Cleave . There was no question that wives were somewhat neglected in some lodges , and they thought that if they gave Bro . Cleave the ordinary Past Master ' s jewel they should also give him something for Mrs . Cleave . He hoped the brethren would agree that the fruit dishes , which he asked Bro . Cleave to accept on behalf of his wife , were well chosen , the design being some 120 years old . He also asked them to combine in the toast the name of Bro , Easterbrook , P . M ., who had acted as I . P . M . during the past year .

Bro . J . R . Cleave , P . P . G . D . Surrey , I . P . M ., said he was overwhelmed by their reception . Whatever he had done had been possibly from fairly selliih motivesfrom the interest he took in Masonry and the desire to make that lodge a success . Any wosk in that direction was a labour of love . He wis surprised at the magnificent present made to his wife , and on her behalf he could say she would be equally surprised , and he only wished she were present . He yielded to none in his rendering of the Masonic ritual , for although he was not always perfect , he did the best he could , for if

a man undertook the work , it should be done in a dignified and appropriate minner , and to the bestof his ability ; he had endeavoured so to render it . As that was the last tims he should have the privilege of addressing them , he wished to emphasise what Bro . Langton had said in drawing attention to the W . M . ' s list for the Boys' School . In connection with the lodge there was a Benevolent Association , which was the means of sending him up for the Girls' School with the fourth highest list . - On behalf of his wife he thanked them for the handsome present given her , which was a camolete surprise .
