An analyst , writing in " Cassell's Magazine for November , on " Poisons in the House , " says that lampshades are frequently made of stiff paper , the outer side of which is green , as being the easiest colour for the eyes ; but xvhile commendable thoughtfulness is evident in the selection of colour , the same consideration is certainly not

shoivn in the materials xvhich produce that pleasant hue , for in numerous instances the green pigment has been found to contain a large amount of arsenic . The fact of itself is sufficiently alarming ; but xvhen xve take into account the heat of the lamp , which greatly assists in the volatilsation of the arsenic , xve see hoxv dangerous such useful articles may become to persons in the room , and

An interesting series of experiments , with the object of utilising the electric light for war purposes on land , has just been concluded at Shoeburyness , and is understood to have given much satisfaction . One portion of the experiments xvas devoted to the test of heavy and smalt arm fire to extinguish the light . The gunners xvere unsuccessful in their efforts to destroy it , and though a

Experiments havealso at night been carried out xvith the xvar parachute . An act has been passed by the New York legislature xvhich might xvith advantage be applied to London . The Sanitary Engineer , Nexv York , in draxving attention

to this nexv laxv , congratulates the citizens on the fact that henceforth the streets are not to be used for experimental purposes , and that it is noxv unlaxvful for any person or corporation to lay gas or steam pipes in the streets of the city xvithout the consent of two-thirds of the property owners in such street . accompanied by eight bridesmaids . She xvas attired in a costume of ivory duchesse satin , trimmed xvith old point de Flandre and sprays of orange-blossom . The service was fully choral . At the conclusion of the ceremony the bridal party adjourned to the Alarquis of Bath ' s toxvn house in Berkeley-square , xvhere the xvedding breakfast xvas served . The xvedding presents xvere both numerous and costly , and included a magnificent bracelet of pearls and diamonds from the Prince and Princess of Wales .

Bro . William Hacker , of Shelbyville , Ind ., formally years one of the most prominent Masons of that jurisdiction , and xvho has been honoured xvith all the high offices of the various branches of the Fraternity , is noxv an old man . For years he has diligently xvorked to secure a complete Alasonic library , and succeeded in gathering a very valuable collection , as the writer hereof can testify , having had

the privilege to make a personal examination . This library is soon to become the property of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Bodies of Indianapolis , to be placed in their nexv temple now in course of construction . It is a princely donation b y III . Bro . Hacker , who has long contemplated as to its disposition in a satisfactory manner after the years of industry and intelligence he has given to its collection . —Rochester U . S . A . Democrat .

Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon , ProG . M ., delivered an address on his recent Canadian tour , at the Highclere Reading-room , on the gth inst ., our noble brother xvas very cordially received by the audience , mainly composed of his near neighbours . In the course of his address , the delivery of which occupied upwards of an hour , the noble earl said he did not propose to discuss the political part of the subject .

The xvhole mind of the people of Canada was being turned to the settlement of this nexv country , and it xvas to them the great question of questions . He xvas very much struck xvith it himself , and he felt hoxv much xvholesomer a subject it xvas for the consideration of men than many of the subjects upon xvhich persons exercised their minds in the older countries . That country offered true , natural xvork for

man , such as he xvas engaged in in the early ages of the xvorld , such as God gave him all his faculties for , and such as made him happy when thus engaged . No one could doubt hoxv great the future of Canada must be if the people only persevered with the same judgment and moderation and good sense xvhich had characterised the xvhole of their legislation and proceedings for many years . He xvould only say

in conclusion that , although he xvould never advise any man hastily or lightly to leave the old country , yet if he once made up his mind to go , he honestl y believed that noivhere xvould he find a healthier life , a friendlier xvelcome , or a better home than in British North America . A vote of thanks xvas heartily accorded to the noble earl for his exceedingly interesting discourse .

P ., the nexv Lord Alayor , xvas appointed Senior Grand Warden , and Bro . Viscount Dangan , Senior Grand Deacon . Among the brethren present xvere Bros . Sir G . Goldney , Bart ., ALP ., D . P . G . M . P . ( G . Superintendent ) . Noxv that Bro . the Right Hon . the Earl of Lathom , D . G . M ., Prov . G . M . West Lancashire , has returned from his American tour , the annual meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of this division , postponed from the beginning of October , xvill probably be held on Thursday or Friday ,

the 29 th or 30 th inst . The exact place and date of meeting xvill shortly be announced . The Craft generally xvill be glad to know that our esteemed Deputy Grand Alaster has come back in the possession of evidently robust health , and was present xvith the Countess at the Toxvn Hall , Liverpool , on Alonday the 5 th inst ., to * . receive the Alarquis and the Alarchioness of Lome on their return from Canada .

The New York Dail y Witness is Responsible for the folloxving : — "There is said to have been recently returned to the Paterson ( N . J . ) post office a letter , on the back of which are 20 different kinds of stamps , showing that it has had the care of as many different postmasters . This letter contains a 10-dollar bill of exchange , and xx'as

mailed from Peterson in October last , but so badly addressed that the destination had to be guessed at . It xvas first sent to Ireland , and to every post-office of that island . It xvas then tried in Italy , xvhere failure to lind the owner caused it to be sent to China , and from the Oriental empire it has been returned to the sender .

_ The Cattle Show xvill attract many of our provincial friends to London . Someyears ago this and Aladame Tussaud ' s Exhibition were almost identical , as the x'isitors only had to pass from one to the other . Even noxv , though the Agricultural Hall is some distance from Baker-street , visitors can , xvithin a short time , visit the txvo either by omnibus or underground railway . The latest additions to

the collection of figures of notorious individuals in the Chamber of Horrors comprise a portrait model of Alarivood , the hangman , taken from sittings specially given by Alarwood to the Alessrs . Tussaud during his last visit to London , and as the fact is he expressed himself very pleased at the striking likeness . Outside this room ( in one of the Napoleon rooms ) is the portrait model of lames

Carey , the Informer , and close to it are the life-like models of the unhappy Lord Frederick Cavendish and Air . Burke , xvho xvere so foully murdered in Phcenix Park . In the large hall are the Comte de Paris , the Due de Nemours , and the late Comte de Chambord . The Royal Family , in the magnificent Court dresses , elicit numerous expressions of admiration : added to the list of attraction' !

are AL Washington , President Grevy , and the brave , but ill-fated Capt . Webb . The Oldest Mason is a topic concerning xvhich all readers of the Alasonic neivspapers have groxvn xveary ; but xvhen one is brought face to face xvith a venerable brother xvho has passed the allotted span of man—three score years and ten—by more than twenty yearsxvith all of

, his faculties well preserved , and who remembers and speaks intelligently of times long past , this is xvorthy of some special mention . VVe , therefore , xvith pleasure note our visit during the last xveek to our venerable and xvorthy Brother , P . AL Joseph G . Bowen , of Alount Alotiah Lodge , No . 155 , of this city . Bro . Bowen xvill to-day , October 27 th , celebrate the ninety-second anniversary of his birthday .

Our Brother still retains much of his wonted fire , and loves to talk of Alasonry , recalling Masonic incidents that occurred long before xve xvere born , and relating them xvith much of the vivacity of youth . We found him somewhat jealous of the report he had read that Bro . Judge VVm . Donaldson was the senior member of the Grand Lod ^ e of Pennsylvania . P . AI . Bro . Bowen claims that he is the

oldest living member ot this Grand Body . In December 1817 , he xvas installed W . M . of Alount Aloriah Lodge , No . iss , at the constitution of the lodge , Bro . Walter Kerr beinff then R . W . Grand Alaster . In December , 1 SS 3 , he will have been sixty-six years a member of the Grand Lodge ; and from this record xve think that our venerable Bro . Bowen is right in his Alasonic pride in claiming tn he

tho oldest living member of the Grand Lodgeof Pennsylvania , both in age and in membership of that body . Bro Bowen was twice elected to the office of W . AL of Lodge No . 155 , and also served as secretary for txventy-four years , from 1821 to 1 S 36 , and from 1 S 39 to 1 S 48 , and was a constant attendant of the lodge until recent years . —Philadelphia Keystone .

to this nexv laxv , congratulates the citizens on the fact that henceforth the streets are not to be used for experimental purposes , and that it is noxv unlaxvful for any person or corporation to lay gas or steam pipes in the streets of the city xvithout the consent of two-thirds of the property owners in such street .
