Alarsland , LG . 1 S 05 . In consequence of the lamented death of Bro . the Rev . R . H . Atherton , ALA ., S . VV . and Chaplain of the lodge , the members appeared in Alasonic mourning . This event

cast a deep gloom over the proceedings of the evening , more especially as at this meeting the election of W . M . took place , and in all probability Bro . Atherton xvould have been unanimously elected to fill the chair of King Solomon for the ensuing year . After the usual preliminary business Bros . Paterson and Hobbs xvcre raised to the Sublime Degree of Alaster Alasons . The election of W . AL for the

ensuing year xvas next proceeded xvith , and Bro . R . Logan , J . W . ( the first initiate of the lodge ) , xvas unanimously elected . Bro . P . Edinger , P . The lodge having been opened and the minutes of the former meeting read and confirmed , a ballot xvas taken for Bro . H . VV . Blakeas a joiningmember , which proved

unanimous in his favour . The W . M . then passed Bro . J . R . Ward to the degree of a F . C . The W . M . presented the lodge with a handsome charity box , and a hearty vote of thanks having been accorded him for his present , the lodge was duly closed . The brethren adjourned to ' the George and Dragon Hotel , and after partaking of the banquet , the VV . M . gave the usual loyal toasts . In proposing the toast of the

ALW . G . A 1 ., he alluded to the great interest the Prince of Wales alxvays took in Alasonry , and he felt sure the brethren would be glad to knoxv that the M . W . G . M . had kindly consented to lay the foundation stone of the nexv xving to the Boys' School some time next year . Bro . Monson then gave in capital style the new Masonic rendering of "God bless the Prince of Wales , " copies of which had been kindly presented to the brethren by the

VV . AI . Bro . Roebuck , in proposing "The Grand Officers , " spoke in very eulogistic terms respecting them all , and xvas pleased . 'to think the Priory Lodge xvas honoured by the presence of Bro . Thrupp , xvhom he had knoxvn for a great number of year ' s . He was a good worker in Masonry , not only in London , but in the province of Middlesex , xvhere he occupied a very high position .

Bro . Thrupp , in reply , congratulated the brethren on having so able a brother to preside over them as their W . AL He had discharged his duties in a most satisfactory manner that evening , and it xvas evident that hearty good feeling and harmony prevailed under his ruling . Bro . Thrupp xvas very sorry that the Priory Lodge just happened to be outside the province in xvhich he took an active interest . The " Health of thc W . AI . " xvas then proposed

by Bro . Thrupp , xvho assured the brethren it xvas hardly possible for him to say any more than he had already done in favour of Bro . Roebuck . He took a very active interest in the Craft , and more especially xvith regard to thc Alasonic charities . Whenever his hand xvas given to a brother , he might be sure it xvas the grasp of true friendship . The VV . AI . responded in his usual happy manner , assuring the brethren that nothing should be ivanting on his part

in promoting the interests and the xvelfarc of the Priory Lodge . He felt proud of the position he occupied , and as long as he had the support of those around him , there need not be any fear as to the future prosperity of the lodge . The remaining toasts , " The Neiv Joining Member , H . W . Blake , " "The Visitors , " and "The Officers , " having been proposed and responded to , the Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings . Several songs xvere rendered during the evening , Bro . E . H . Sugg ably presiding at the pianoforte .

BOLTON . —Anchor and Hope Lodge ( No . 37 ) . —The monthly meeting of this lodge was held on the Sth inst ., at the Sxvan Hotel . Present s Bros . G . ) P . Brockbank , P . P . G . S . D ., and Grand Stexvard Scotland , VV . AI . ; E . M . Garstang , I . P . M . ; John Booth , S . W . ; F . W . Pacey , P . P . G . Org . Berks and Bucks , J . VV . ; Rev . J . H . Pemmigton , P . M . ; John Alorris , P . M . ; W . AI . Musgrave , R . Nightingale , VVm . Golding , M . Robinson , W . Gillibrand , Jas . Naylor , and Thos . Higson . Visitor : Bro . Peter Bradburn , J . VV . 221 . The minutes of the last meeting having been confirmed , Bros . Robinson and Gillibrand xvere passed to the Degree of Fellow Craft by the W . AL , and the xvorking tools of the Degree were explained to them by the Senior Warden .

Bro . Pacey , Mus . Bac . Oxon , J . W ., to xvhose kindness the lodge is indebted for several ornamental additions to its furniture , presented an oak frame to enclose the four illuminated addresses xvhich xvere presented to the lodge on the occasion of thc sesqui-centennial festival in October last . The xvorkmanship is entirely from the hands of the donor and executed by him in spare hours xvhen not actively engaged in his arduous professional duties .

A very hearty vote of thanks xvasaxvarded to Bro . Pacey on the motion of Bro . Freeman , P . M ., seconded by Bro . Rooke Pemmigton , P . AI . The folloxving is a description of the frame . The wood is three inches xvidc , xvith a flange of half an inch outside , surmounted by a pediment , in xvhich is the sacred symbol or rays of glory , in carved frctxvork ; at the top of the frame proper , extending from one side to the other , is a

conventional scroll in iretxvork , laid on , with a medallion in the centre , haying thc Master's jexvel carved on it , encircled by an imitation of rope ; on the right and left of the frame are fluted Ionic columns , carved out of the solid , xvith li g hted candles at the tops , the bases being cut into medallions similar to the one above , but having the jewels of the Wardens , Senior on the left and Junior on the right ; the bottom of the frame is carved to represent the square pavement . Across the frame from side to side , and

from top to bottom , are bars of fretwork , composed of a repetition of a simple volute in a border , joined in the centre by a medallion , having carved _ on it the number of the lodge ( 37 ) , thus dividing the picture into four compartments , one for each address . The whole is of solid oak , and has been designed and , as xve have before stated , personally executed by Bro . Pacey . Some routine business was transacted , after xvhich a portion of the ancient charges was read by the Senior Warden , and the lodge xvas closed in peace and harmony .

BATH . —Royal Cumberland Lodge ( No . 41 ) . — The second regular meeting of the session xvas held at the Alasonic Hall , on Thursday , the ist inst ., when the lodge xvas opened at 7 . 45 p . m . Unfortunately this xvas the day of the municipal elections , xvhen there xvere several exciting contests , xvhich caused the absence of many xvho arc

generally very regular in attendance , and some curtailment of the business . Present : Bros . Mercer , VV . AI . j Cater , I . P . M . ; Ashley , P . AL and Treas , j Radxvay , P . M . and Sec . j T . Wilton , P . AL , Dir . of Cers . j Capt . R . P . Floyd , P . M . ; Dr . Hopkins , P . M . ; F . Wilkinson , P . M ., as S . W . ; Ames , J . W . ; W . Peach , S . Sidwell , as Stewards ; and Bigxvood , Tyler . Visitors : R . R . Cook , P . AL 3 js ; C . Milsom , P . M . 53 ; Glover , W . M . 906 ; and Clements , 53 . But fexv other members of the lodge attended . Having opened the lodge and had the previous minutes read by the Secretary , and confirmed , the W . M . expressed his regret that at the October meeting , in the resume xvhich he had given of Alasonic occurrences during the

vacation , he had been guilty of an important omission . Referring to his notice of the celebration of the third jubilee of the lodge , he had totally forgotten the course xvhich Bro . Dr . Hopkins had adopted in giving a Masonic banquet in honour of the event , of xvhich there xvas thus no record among those of the lodge proceedings , and such an omission xvas the more remarkable because it xvas shared with other brethren , and because that brother had in a

similar manner inaugurated the commencement of a series of interesting events in connection xvith the lodge three years ago , of which this is probably the last . He concluded by proposing a vote of thanks to Bro . Dr . Hopkins for his unique and generous conduct . This xvas seconded xvith a fexv similar remarks by Bro . Cater , LP . AL , and carried xvith acclamation , after Bro . Ashley , P . AL , had jocosely acknoxvledged that in this matter all had been

sinners , but if the worthy brother would again give them an opportunity , he thought he might guarantee that such neglect should not occur again . Bro . Dr . Hopkins thanked thebrethren forthecompliment , atthe same time remarking that he rather oxved an apology to many of the members for his omission to invite them , xvliich xvas contrary to his course on the former occasion . He had been compelled to limit his invitations of those

belonging to the lodge to the P . Als . and officers , as he xvished to include the chiefs of the Royal Cumberland R . A . and Mark Degrees , the W . Als . of the other Bath lodges , and a fexv personal friends xvho xvere not connected with either of these bodies . Bros . S . Collis , P . AL 925 and 15 S 7 , and C . Comes , 1329 , xvere successfully balloted for as joining members . The latter being present expressed his satisfaction

at his reception in so distinguished and xvell xvorked a lodge , of xvhich he hoped to prove himself a xvorthy and useful member . Bro . Chas . Baldwin having been presented as a candidate for the Second Degree , underxvent a searching examination as to his proficiency , very many questions being put to him , xvhich he ansxvered so accurately and promptly as to elicit hearty commendation by acclamation and a fexv approving remarks from the

Secretary in anticipation of the position he may at no distant period attain by pursuance of such a course . Bro . C . Baldxvin was then entrusted and dismissed for preparation . The lodge xvas opened in the Second Degree , and on the return or the candidate he xx-as duly passed as a F . C . by the VV . M ., xvho also explained the xvorking tools , performing the ceremony remarkably xvell , especially after thc excitement of the day , xvhich rendered the brethren so

impatient for dismissal that thc delivery of the charge and lecture xvas postponed . The lodge xvas closed in the Second Degree . Bro . Dr . Hopkins . narrated the honour and substantial support xvhich had been conferred upon Bro . W . J . Hughan , the xvell knoxvn Masonic historian and archaeologist , by the Cornish brethren , in the presentation to him of a handsome Prov . Grand Secretary ' s jexvel and a purse

containing . £ 275 , on his leaving the province on account of the climate . He stated that many brethren in other districts had been anxious to join in this testimony to his merits by reason of the services he had rendered to the Craft in general , but that these offers had been politely declined . In consequence of this limitation , a proposal had been made by the eminent Bro . Whytehead , of York , that an effort should be made throughout the country to raise a

large fund , which might adequately represent the appreciation of Bro . Hughan's labours and researches extending over many years , the publication of xvhich suggestion in the Freemason had produced many favourable responses , and steps toxvards the formation of an influential Committee in London , as recorded on page 53 6 of that journal on October . 27 th , xvhich Dr . Hopkins read and commended to the notice of those present , adding that Bro . Hughan being

an honorary member of No . 41 , and having on several occasions rendered valuable assistance in various xvays , had great claims on the brethren , and therefore itwasmostfitting that this lodge should be among the foremost to join in the movement . Dr . Hopkins concluded by giving notice of the following proposition for consideration at the next lodge meeting , the W . M . offering to second it : "A suggestion having been publicly made that the present is a fitting

opportunity to recognise the great services rendered to the Craft by the W . Bro . W . J . Hughan , P . G . D . of England , in having devoted so much of his time and talents to investigations in Masonic archaeology during nearly a quarter of a century . That in the event of a scheme being carried out for presenting a _ substantial proof of the general appreciation of the eminent services of Bro . Hughan , and xvith a view to enable him to continue his researches

unfettered by other engagements , a sum not exceeding five guineas be voted by the Royal Cumberland Lodge , No . 41 , as a contribution to the fund , in addition to any subscriptions from individual members of the lodge . " The W . M . urgently requested the brethren to attend the intermediate meetings for instruction , stating that on the last occasion not a single officer or P . M . was present ,

and that therefore all the chairs were occupied by younger members , xvho had discharged their duties most creditably . In this way only could they hope for promotion to office in the lodge . A vote of thanks to the visitors xvas received xvith acclamation and responded to by Bros . Cook and Glover , who commended the manner in xvhich the proceedings had been conducted , by which they hoped to profit i " their own lodges . The lodge was finally closed at 9 . 15 *

BOLTON . —St . John ' s Lodge ( No . 221 ) . —A meeting of emergency xvas held on Tuesday evening , the 30 th ult ., there being present Bros . John Isherxvood , W . M . ; Jabez Bootroyd , I . P . M . ; Edxvin Melrose , S . VV . ; Peter Bradburn , J . VV . ; G . P . Brockbank , P . P . G . S . D ., G . Stwd . Scotland , Treas . j Charles Crompton , S . D . i James Walker , J . D . j VV . and R . Cuerden , Stwds . ; II . J . Briscoe , Org . ; and ih ° , * Higson , Tyler j also Bros . Thomas Morris , P . M . ; E . « ' * Alakin , R . J . Chirnsidc , and J . R . Haslam . The purpose of the meeting xvas to pass Bro . Makin to the Second Degree , and this ceremony having been p er " formed by the W . M ., and the working tools ol the degree explained by thc S . VV ., the lodge was closed .

AL and Treas ., xvas re-elected Treasurer . It xvas then resolved , on the proposition of the W . AI ., that a vote of condolence xvith the widoxv of the late Bro . Atherton , S . W . and Chaplain , in her bereavement be entered on the minutes , and that a copy of the resolution

be forxvarded to Airs . Atherton . A further resolution xvas then carried empowering the Secretary to obtain at the expense of the lodge a floral wreath to be deposited on the coffin containing the mortal remains of their deceased brother . The lodge xvas then closed , and the brethren having partaken of some light refreshment and duly honoured the customary toasts , and also one to the memory of the late S . W . and Chaplain , departed to their respective homes .
