reelected Ireasurer of the Three Grand Principles Lodge , No . 9 67 , Pcnryn . Bro . the Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., and Mr . Goschen , M . P ., arrived at Windsor Castle on Tuesday evening on a visit to the Queen , and had the honour of being included in the Royal dinner party .

Jefferson Davis , who was President of the Southern Confederacy in the great w-ar of Secession from 1 S 61 to 1 S 65 , died on Friday , the 6 th inst ., at New Orleans in the S 2 nd year of his age . He had been ill for a long time past . The Borough of Greenwich Lodge , No . 2332 , was consecrated on Wednesday last , at the Masonic Rooms , Greenwich . The Grand Secretary , Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , performed the ceremony . We hope to give a report in our next .
Bro . Alderman Sir H . E . Kni ght is so far restored to health that he was able on Sunday to attend service at St . Giles , Cripplegate , for the purpose of returning thanks foi his recovery . He was accompanied on the occasion by Lady Knight .
At Cambridge , Bro . John Fish Symonds , P . P . G . D . C , has been elected W . M . of the Three Grand Principles Lodge , No . 441 , and will be installed on Monday , January 6 th . Bro . William Purchas , P . P . G . Reg ., has been elected W . M . of the Scientific Lodge , No . SS , and will be installed on Monday , January 13 th . Both these town lodges have had a successful year .
We deeply sympathise with Bro . J . Newton , P . A . G . Sec . East Lancashire , on the death of his wife . The esteemed lady had been suffering some months , but lingered until a few days ago . At a meeting of the Anchor and Hope Lodge , No . 37 , of which Bro . Newton is a very prominent member , it was proposed to send a letter of condolence , expressing their regret at the great loss he had sustained .
We hear that a movement is on foot to establish in the city of Durham a new lodge , to be called the Universities Lodge , the membership to be restricted to graduates of a British University . Among the founders we observe the names of Bros , the Rev . Canon Tristram , D . P . G . M . of Durham , the Rev . Canon Kynaston , and Dr . Hill Drury , P . M . S 5 , W . M . 1379 . We need scarcely say that we wish the project every success .
CHRISTMAS APPEAL . —London Fever Hospital , Liverpoolroad , N . —The Committee of this Institution are called upon to provide daily all this Christmas tide for close upon 100 patients , of all ages and both sexes , suffering from scarlet fever , diphtheria , and other forms of infectious disease . The benevolent are earnestly asked to help . Subscriptions and donations sent to Major Christie , the Secretary , at the hospital , will be gratefully received and acknowledged .
I he annual court of the Royal Caledonian Asylum was held on Saturday , at the Institution , Caledonian-road , Sir | . Heron-Maxwell , Bart ., in the chair . The Secretary , Mr . T . Inglis , laid before the meeting his yearly report , from which it appeared that at the present time there was thc largest number of children in the asylum that it has had at any previous period since its establishment in 1 S 15 , viz ., 104 boys and 62 girls . The election of 11 boys out of a list of 19 candidates sent took place .

The service was originated by the members of the Arthur Sullivan Lodge , No . 2156 , a large proportion of whom belong to the musical profession . The members of the Order , of whom a large number were present , entered the cathedral in procession wearing Masonic regalia . They occupied the centre of the church , the side
aisles being well filled by the general public . The musical arrangements were under the direction of Mr . J . K . Pyne , organist of the cathedral . The cathedral choir was augmented by friends , and a string band also took part . The Dean read the prayers , and a sermon was preached by the Rev . T . B . Spencer , of St . James's , Preston , G . Chap . England . An offertory was taken on behalf of the East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution .

The Orange Lodge , No . 152 , of which Bro . Dr . St . George is W . M ., and which is conducted on temperance lines , is one of the most flourishing in Lisburn .
On Monday , at the ordinary meeting of the council of the Sanitary Assurance Association , held at the offices , 5 , Argyll-place , VV ., arrangements were completed for a series of sanitary lectures during January and February , 1800 , in the theatre of the College of State Medicine , Great Russell-street . The object of the Association being to promote good sanitary arrangements of all classes of the community , both men and women are invited to these lectures .
The annual installation banquet of the Stuart Lodge , No . 540 , took place at the Swan Hotel , Bedford , on the 4 th inst , when Bro . V . W . Webb was installed as Master for the ensuing year . Bro . Alderman Sir J . Whitehead will in all probability be the High Sheriff of the county of London next year , as Sir R . Wallace , Bart ., M . P ., who was first on the list , is not well enough to justify him in undertaking thc duties . Sir James ' s nomination was a personal compliment on the
part of the Lord Chief Justice , which was rendered the more graceful from the fact that they had previously been somewhat out of accord on one subject , namely , that of the fund raised at the Mansion House by Sir James for the Pasteur Institute .
As an instance of the romantic incidents narrated of Freemasonry on the battle-field , the following , related by Bro . Sir Archibald Alison , at a meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Glasgow , will bear being retold . In the Crimean War an English officer led a small party of soldiers up to one of the guns placed in an embrasure in the Redan . The
majority of the men fell in the deadly fire to which they exposed themselves . Those remaining were gallantly met by a- body of Russian soldiers , and the English officer was about to be bayoneted , when he was Masonically recognised by a Russian officer , who struck up the bayonets of his soldiers , led his newly-found brother to the rear , and treated him with the kindness of a Mason .

Tijou has recently been appointed High Baliff of the Bow County Court . Bro . Tijou is wellknown and respected in Masonic circles , as well as in other communities in Essex , and all will be glad to hear of his advancement .
The British and Foreign Bible Society has , during the St years of its existence , issued from its London house alone 29 , 000 , 000 of complete Bibles , nearly 32 , 000 , 000 of New Testaments , and 11 , 845 , 000 portions of the Bible . This makes a total of 72 , 500 , 000 books issued from the London headquarters .

Very general regret will be felt in Liverpool and neighbourhood at the news of the death of Bro . R . A . Davies , who was highly respected by a very large circle of friends . Thc deceased was for many years prominently connected with thc linn of Messrs . Elkington and Co ., representing them at the international exhibitions held in London , Paris , Vienna , and Philadelphia . He was a good many years ago
appointed manager of the Liverpool establishment , and during his stay there he secured universal admiration by his artistic taste and strict business integrity , the affairs of the firm greatly prospering under his able direction . In consequence of failing health , Bro . Davies gave up the responsibilities of his post there and removed to Birmingham , where he died last Saturday . The deceased was a

The Lord Mayor , Lord Rothschild , Sir A . Clark , Bart ., Sir L . Playfair , M . P ., Sir C . Russell , O . C , M . P ., and Mr . E . Lawson have consented to support the Prince of Wales at a dinner to be held at the Hotel Metropole early in January for the purpose of appealing to public sympathy to aid in the promotion of a National Leprosy Fund .
At the Albert Institute , Windsor , on Tuesday , Mr . A . N . Butt , F . R . Hist . S ., purposes giving' a lecture on " Our First Printed Books and Mow we Came by Them . " Her Majesty has granted him permission to borrow for the purpose of his lecture all the Caxton ' s in the Royal Library at Windsor .
Bro . Sir Somers Vine will , it is announced , contribute an article to the forthcoming January issue of " Lippincott ' s Magazine . Some 209 dolls , dressed in the costumes adopted at upwards of 100 different institutions , were on view , on Saturday , at the doll exhibition that was held at the Charing Cross Hospital , under the auspices of the Hospital . Prizes were offered for the best-dressed dolls . For a set of two dolls the first prize was awarded to a nurse who is attached to the Royal Hospital for Incurables , Putney .
A lodge , to be conducted on temperance principles , is about to be opened in Lisburn . Bro . Dr . St . George , of the County Antrim Infirmary , and other brethren are moving actively in the matter , and have strong hopes that success will crown their efforts . The Orange Lodge , No . 152 , of which Bro . Dr . St . George is W . M ., and which is conducted on temperance lines , is one of the most flourishing in Lisburn .
On Monday , at the ordinary meeting of the council of the Sanitary Assurance Association , held at the offices , 5 , Argyll-place , VV ., arrangements were completed for a series of sanitary lectures during January and February , 1800 , in the theatre of the College of State Medicine , Great Russell-street . The object of the Association being to promote good sanitary arrangements of all classes of the community , both men and women are invited to these lectures .
The annual installation banquet of the Stuart Lodge , No . 540 , took place at the Swan Hotel , Bedford , on the 4 th inst , when Bro . V . W . Webb was installed as Master for the ensuing year . About 50 members of the Order were present , including visitors from the neighbouring lodges . During the evening' a silver salver was presented to Bro . C E . Prior , P . M ., P . Z ., as a mark of esteem and of their appreciation of his kind services during the 15 years he acted as Secretary to the lodge .
Bro . Alderman Sir J . Whitehead will in all probability be the High Sheriff of the county of London next year , as Sir R . Wallace , Bart ., M . P ., who was first on the list , is not well enough to justify him in undertaking thc duties . Sir James ' s nomination was a personal compliment on the
part of the Lord Chief Justice , which was rendered the more graceful from the fact that they had previously been somewhat out of accord on one subject , namely , that of the fund raised at the Mansion House by Sir James for the Pasteur Institute .
As an instance of the romantic incidents narrated of Freemasonry on the battle-field , the following , related by Bro . Sir Archibald Alison , at a meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Glasgow , will bear being retold . In the Crimean War an English officer led a small party of soldiers up to one of the guns placed in an embrasure in the Redan . The
majority of the men fell in the deadly fire to which they exposed themselves . Those remaining were gallantly met by a- body of Russian soldiers , and the English officer was about to be bayoneted , when he was Masonically recognised by a Russian officer , who struck up the bayonets of his soldiers , led his newly-found brother to the rear , and treated him with the kindness of a Mason .

The menu was worthy of the house , and the wines were of the rarest . Bro . Bro . J . Ernest Greaves ( Lord Lieutenant of Carnarvonshire ) has been installed Worship ful Master of the Madoc Lodg-e . Bro . Charles J . R . Tijou has recently been appointed High Baliff of the Bow County Court . Bro . Tijou is wellknown and respected in Masonic circles , as well as in other communities in Essex , and all will be glad to hear of his advancement .
The British and Foreign Bible Society has , during the St years of its existence , issued from its London house alone 29 , 000 , 000 of complete Bibles , nearly 32 , 000 , 000 of New Testaments , and 11 , 845 , 000 portions of the Bible . This makes a total of 72 , 500 , 000 books issued from the London headquarters .
The consecration of the Ravenscroft Lodge , No . 2331 , will take place at the Red Lion , High Barnet , on Tuesday next . The ceremonies will be performed by the Prov . Grand Master , Bro . T . F . The 15 th anniversary dinner of the Metropolitan Dairyman ' s Benevolent Institution was held at Freemasons ' Tavern on the 15 th inst ., under the presidency of Mr . George Price , Bros . The Langton Lodge of Instruction will hold its annual festival on Thursday , the 19 th inst ., at the White Hart Tavern , Abchurch-lane , E . C . This meeting will be a very important event in the history of the lodge , as a new or second Benevolent Association will be formed in the place of the first , which has just come to an end after raising between X 1300 and A 1400 for the Masonic Charities .

Very general regret will be felt in Liverpool and neighbourhood at the news of the death of Bro . R . A . Davies , who was highly respected by a very large circle of friends . Thc deceased was for many years prominently connected with thc linn of Messrs . Elkington and Co ., representing them at the international exhibitions held in London , Paris , Vienna , and Philadelphia . He was a good many years ago
appointed manager of the Liverpool establishment , and during his stay there he secured universal admiration by his artistic taste and strict business integrity , the affairs of the firm greatly prospering under his able direction . In consequence of failing health , Bro . Davies gave up the responsibilities of his post there and removed to Birmingham , where he died last Saturday . The deceased was a
wellknown member of our Order , having at one time filled the office of Prov . G . Treasurer of West Lancashire , and the Worshipful Mastership of the Skelmersdale Lodge , Xo . 13 S 0 .
