"MASONIC CALENDAR FOR THE PROVINCE OF HERTFORDSHIRE , 1 S 99 . "—The Editor of this most creditable Annual is Bro . Charles Bullock , Prov . G . Sec . ( The Elm' , Great Berkhampstead ) , from whom copies may be had for one shilling each . It is published by authority of the Prov . G . What used to be called ' * Little Herts " now contains 22 Lodges , eight Chapters , five Mark Lodges , and a
K . T . Preceptory , the Lists of Officers , P . Ms ., & c , as to all these being given , and ably arranged for reference . The names , address , and votes held in each of the Central Masonic Charities cover a goodly number of pages , and though the totals are not recorded , the number of votes held in the Province must be very large indeed . " Noteworthy Events in Hertfordshire Freemasonry" is an excellent compilation , and one that might well be followed by other Editors . The complete History of the P ovince has been written by Bro . George B . Abbott , its accomplished Historian , and m ty be had from the Publisher , Bro . Geo . Kenning , London , for half-a-guinea .

Three Grand Principles Lodge , No . 441 . Monday last was , indeed , a red-letter day in the history of this lodge . Thiir ordinary meeting happened to fa'l on the same day as the opening of the 30 th annual Conference of the National Union of Teachers at Cambridge , and care being taken to invite the Masonic brethren connected with the Union , there was a large and unique gatherirg , comprising 75 visitors from all parts of the kingdom , whilst the total number prjent was 105 . Needless to say that the gathering was an exceptionally happy one , which it fails this deponent togive an adequate description of .
Theiewas an initiation , and the visitors spoke with unstinted praise of the work thown by the W . M , Bro . Luke Hosegood , and his officers , whilst as to the hospitality displayed , it was averred that the like had never before been witnessed in connecti m with thc National Union of Teachers . One ol them , Bro . II imilton , said they had had splmdid receptions at their previous conferences , but Cambridge certainly took the cake .
... .. . Provint-ial Grai . d Officers of Cambridgeshire were in evidence to give a hearty welcome to the piovince ; and Bro . j . Catling , P M ., in felicitous terms , gave " The Health of the Visitors . " 'I here were no fewer than 12 responses to this toast , and all the speeches were apt
and crisp . 'The harmony of th : evening was considerably enhanced by a number of ace qilable items of vocal and elocutionary 1 If oris by visiting and local tdlsnt . It may safely be predicted that No . 441 , or indeed any other Cambridge lodge , will go a long time before witnessing such a notable assembly .

Bishop , 2705 ; G . F . Redpath , 157 ; J . Davies , 1309 ; and R . T . West , 1744 .
After the minutes of the last meeting had been read the acting W . M ., Br ) . VV . D . Church , P . M ., raised Bros . Storey , Bowen , and Garnett to the Third Degree , and passed Bro . Bowler to the Second Degree . He afterwards initiated Mr . Arthur Litchwitz . The working of Bro . W . D . Church , P . M ., was excellent , and proved that he is a master of the art . The antient charge ivas given by Bro . D . Campbell , P . M ., in a
most eloquent and impressive manner . Bro . VV . D . Church , P . M ., s ' ated thit they were no doubt very anxious to hear about the W . M ., Bro . VV . Banks , but the news wis not very cheering . The W . M . ' s wife had received a letter from him , posted from the Cape , that the journey so far had done him no good . He ( Bra . Church ) felt that he was expressing the sentiments of them all in wishing the VV . M . a speedy return to health . Other business followed and the lodce was then closed .
The banquet that followed fully maintained the great reputation of the Great Eastern Hotel , and it was well served under the personal superintendence of Bro . Becker , who , it was stated , had been appointed manager of the Great Eastern llotel , Harwich .
After the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , Bro . W . D . Church , P . M ., who presided , proposed "The Health of the W . M ., Bro . VV . Banks . " He said that although the W . M . was far away , he felt certain that his thoughts were with them , and he knew he was reiterating the wishes of them al ! in hoping that the Great Architect would keep a watchful eye over him and bring him back safely to his native land .
In proposing the toast of ' * The Acting W . M ., Bro . W . D . Church , P . M ., " Bro . F . C . Lintott , I . P . M ., observed that his task was a pleasant one , as many present were initiated by Bro . Church , who had shown them that night that he could do the working of the ritual just as well as he did when he was in the chair , and his year of office , which was successful in every way , would long be remembered .
Bro . VV . D . Church , P . M ., on rising to respond , was heartily received . He stated that it was a pleasure to preside as VV . M ., but still with pain , because of the reason of the absence of Bro . Banks , whom they missed very much . He hoped they would forgive all his shortcomings that evening , but he had done his best . Certainly the office of W . M . was preferable to that of Secretary , and he thanked them for their great attention in the lodge .
Li submitting "The Initiate . " the acting VV . M ., Bro . W . D . Church , P . M ., remarked that it was the toast of the evening . Bro . A . Litchwitz cams there with good credentials , and he felt sure he would be a credit to the Craft . He had never seen an initiate g ive greater attention to the ceremony , and he thought it had made a deep impression on him . Bro . A . Litchwitz , who had a hearty reception , stated that he thanked them from
his heart for the very kind way the toast had been proposed and received . He had been conjuring up what he would have to go through , and the ordeal had been a great surprise to him . He was much impressed with the beautiful ceremony of his initiation , and might he add that it made him ambitious to go higher in the Craft . He was proud that they had admitted him as a member , and he should never forget that evening , and ths pleasure he felt for all their kindness to him at the binqueting table .
The acting W . M . gave " The Visitors . " He said it was a pleasing toist , because they were always glad to have plenty of visitors . HJ reid out a list of all those who were present , and remarked that some of them had been there before , and knew ho * visitors were received , and he hoped they would all come again . Bro . E . Prior , one of their guests , came from New V'ork , and he had much pleasure in associating his name with the toast , and those of Bros . S . A . Stanger , P . M . 12 ; L . Litchwitz , P . M . 1 S 91 ; J . Davies , 1309 ; F . J . Hunt , S . W . 194 ; G . F . Redpath , 157 ; J . H . Bishop , and K . T . West .
Bro . E . Prior , Kane Lodge , U . S . A ., responded . He said the way the visitors had been received and entertained was hospitality in itself . His further remarks were given in a very humorous strain , which elxited much laughter . Bro . S . A . Stanger , P . M ., stated that he appreciated the honour of his name having been coupled with the toast , and he was glad that they had an American Mason present , because Englishmen would never forget the great anxiety and sympithy the Americins felt towards Rudyard Kipling , our countrymin , in his serious illness .
Bros . L . Litchwitz , P . M . ; J . Davies , F . J . Hunt , G . F . Redpath , J . H . Bishop , and R . T . West also acknowledged the toast in some excellent speeches , testifying to the able working of the acting W . M ,, Bro . VV . D , Church , and the lavish hospitality of the members . The toast of " The Past Masters " was responded to in eloquent terms by Bros . \ V Finch , P . M . ; F . C . Lintott , I . P . M . ; D . Campbell , P . M . ; and Arthur H . Church , P . M .
The next toasts were " The 'I reasurer" and " The Officers , " and the Tyler ' s toist was a signal that the hour had arrived when the very pleasant proceedings should b ; terminated . During the evening some excellent harmony was contributei by the following brethren : Bros . D . G . Zoers , Harry Greens , Arthur H . Church , S . A . Stanger , E . M . Edwards , P . Becker , and J . II . Shipmin . Special mintion should bjmidsof Bro , Harry Greene , who was in splendid voice , and his efforts were much appreciated . Bro . Arthur II . Church presided at the pianoforte with his well-known abi'ity .

The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given , and Bro . Col . Westropp , in referring to the Prov . Grand Master , Earl Amherst , spoke of his lordship serving as a subalte / n in the Guards in the Crimea , and of his progress in Freemasonry until now he was next to H . R . H . the Prince of Wales . They were especially pleased and proud to know that a soldier had risen to that high position . ( Applause . ) Bro . Smeeth , P . M ., replied to the toast , and mentioned the much regretted death of Bro . Major-Gen . Cumings , who had worked hard for that lodge .
