Derek Iveppel , honoured Bro . Earl and Countess Carrington with his presence at dinner on Saturday evening last .

WE HAVE MUCH PLEASURE in announcing that the Prince George Lodge , No . 30 S , Todmorden , has subscribed the sum of £ S 9 s . towards the Indian Famine Relief Fund . BRO . LORD CHARLES BERESFORD returned to London from Paris towards the end of last week , and will be followed by Lady Charles Beresford before the end of the month .

THE LORD CHANCELLOR ( Bro . Lord Halsbury ) and Lady Halsbury have returned to town from their visit to Ireland , his lordship having completely recovered from hs attack of influenza . THE ALJJANY LODGE , No . 2652 , the latest addition to the Surrey roll , is to be consecrated at the Albany Club , Kingston-on-Thames , next Friday ( April 2 nd ) , by the Right Hon . the Earl of Onslow , the P . G . M . of Surrey .

THE PRESIDENT and Council of the Incorporated Law Society have decided to create a fund , to be known as " The Victoria Pension Fund , " the income of which shall be devoted to providing pensions for life , or for a shorter period , for necessitous solicitors and their families . THE FIRST-CLASS cruiser Europe , which has a total length of 462 ft . and breadth 6 9 ft ., with a displacement of 11 , 000 tons , was successfully launched for her Majesty's government at Clydebank on Saturday last . Her armament , which is very powerful , will include 16 6-inch guns and 12 12-pounders .

THE YACHTS Britannia ( owned by H . R . H . the Prince of Wales ) and Ailsa were both entered for the Grand Prix du Monte Carlo on Saturday last , and after a splendid race over a course of 25 miles , the Ailsa passed the winning post first , the times being Ailsa 5 h . 24 m . 25 sec . ; Britannia 5 h . 40 m . 13 sec . MESSRS . STREET AND Co ., Advertising Agents , of 30 , Cornhill , E . C , and 5 J Serle-street , W . THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY paid his first _ visit to Croydon on Monday for the purpose of preaching the sermon at the 301 st anniversary of the Whitgift foundation . The Mayor was present , wearing his robes and chain of office . After partaking of luncheon at the vicarage , his Grace returned to town . BRO . THE DUKE OF PORTLAND , Master of the Horse , has written publicly in denunciation of " an unnecessarily tight bearing rein " to horses . His Grace remarks that a bearing rein , when properly fitted , is , in many instances , a necessary and useful appliance , " but it becomes an instrument of torture and a hideous eyesore when it is too tight or badly adjusted . "

BROS . A . AKERS-DOUGLAS , Lord Balfour of Burleigh , Lord Halsbury ( Lord Chancellor ) , Lord Ashbourne ( Lord Chancellor of Ireland ) , Sir Michael Hicks-Beach , Bart . ( Chancellor of the Exchequer ) , the Duke of Devonshire , Lord George Hamilton , and Sir M . White Ridley , Bart ., were among the Ministers present at the Cabinet Council held at the Foreign Office on Saturday last .

THE ANNUAL DINNER of the Press Club will take place at Freemasons ' ^ Tavern , on Tuesday next , the 3 rd prox ., when the chair will be occupied by the President of the Club . Amongst the guests who have accepted invitations to be present are Lord Russell of Killowen , Lord Chief Justice of England ; Bro . Maj .- Gen . Sir F . Grenfell , Bro . W . E . Macartney , M . P . ; Mr . A . W . Pinero , and Mr . H . Beerbohm Tree .

BRO . MAJOR-GENERAL LORD METHUEN , commanding the Home District , has accepted , on behalf of the Home District Rifle Meeting Committee , a casket valued at upwards of £ 1000 for cempetition by teams of eight men from the Guards' Brigade and all Volunteer Brigades in the Home District , under conditions which will presently be arranged by the Committee . The donor is Mr . Thomas R . Dewar , of Perth .

THE MARQUIS OF SALISBURY has been suffering from an attack of influenza in a mild form , which prevented him from attending the Cabinet Council which was held at the Foreign Office on Saturday last . But his lordship has greatly improved since . Bro . W . Hume Long , another Cabinet Minister , has also had an attack of the same complaint , but he , too , we are glad to say , has sufficiently recovered to allow of his leaving for the country .

THE QUEEN , accompanied by her Grand Ducal Highness Princess Louis of Battenberg and attended by the Countess of Antrim , drove over to Beaulieu on Monday afternoon and took tea with the Marchioness of Salisbury . On her return her Majesty drove slowly through the town in order that she might witness the annual festival . Viscount Cross is the Minister in attendance on her Majesty and had the honour of being included in the Royal dinner party .

TUB ANNUAL FESTIVAL of the Metropolitan Hospital was held in the Whitehall Rccms , Hotel Metropole , on Tuesday , the iSth inst . The _ Right Hon . the Lord Mayor presided , and was supported by Alderman and Sheriff Ritchie , and Bro . Sheriff Rogers , and at the high table were Lieut .-Col . Montefiore , Alderman Samuel , the Baron de Bush , Mr . Leopold Rothschild , Mr . Deputy Woodrow , Bro . H . Lovegrove , G . S . B . ; Bro . C J . Thomas , C . C . ; Mr . Coleman Jefries , and many others , about 140 in all . Some excellent speeches were made , and a substantial sum raised for this deserving charity .

THE GERMAN GYMNASTIC SOCIETY had a cold collation at their quarters in St . Pancras-road , on Monday evening , in honour of the centenary of the birth of the late Emperor William I . About 800 guests were present , among them being the German Ambassador , Prince Hohenlohe , a relative of the German Chancellor , the German Consul General in London , and a number of the German residents . The meeting was a very festive one , while an appropriate selection of music by an orchestra , led by Bro . Lieut . Dan Godfrey , added greatly to the pleasure of all present .

BRO . SIR J H . MAXWELL stated at the annual general meeting of the General Court of Governors of the Royal Caledonian Asylum that an anonymous donor had presented the institution with the sum of £ 12 , 000 in commemoration of the Queen ' s Diamond Jubilee , and as a memorial of the late Duke ! of Albany , who was a great friend of the Asylum . In making the announcement , Sir J . Maxwell remarked that the Duchess of Albany was one of the most generous patronesses of the Asylum , and it was further stated that at the next election in June , all applicants for the benefits of the institution would be elected without a ballot in celebration of the Jubilee .

LAW AND CITY COURTS COMMITTEE . —On Monday , the presentation banquet of this Committee to meet the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs took place at the Albion Tavern . It is the custom of the members to present the outgoing Chairman of the Committee with a token of appreciation , and this year the honour fell to Bro . Millar Wilkinson . The Chairman , in proposing the toast of the evening , referred to the excellent services rendered by the past Chairman . He concluded by presenting him , on behalf of the Committee , with a handsome piece of plate . Bro . Millar Wilkinson , in acknowledging the gift , modestly disclaimed any special merit on his own account , and ascribed all the successes of the Committee during the past year to the efforts of the legal members .

LORD MAYOR PHILLIPS , supported by the Lady Mayoress and the Bishop of London , presided at the annual public meeting , held at the Mansion House on Saturday last , of the Hospital Saturday Fund . The report showed the total income for the past year to have been £ 21 , 604 , which included workshop collection amounting to £ 10 , 337 , and street collection £ 4884 . Of this , close on £ 18 , 110 was awarded , as

against £ 17 , 650 the previous year . His lordship expressed his belief that the efforts that were being made under the auspices of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales for the London Hospitals would not in any way interlere with the Hospital Saturday or any other Charity , and a resolution wishing all success to his Royal Highness ' s effort on behalf of the London Hospitals was unanimously passed .

THE 50 th performance of " My Friend the Prince , " will take place at the IGarnck Theatre on boat race evening , Saturday , April 3 rd . AMONGST the latest contributors to the Lady Mayoress ' s Branch of the Prince of Wales ' s Hospital Fund are the Barnato , Great Northern , and Tredegar Lodges , with £ 10 103 ., £ 7 us . 6 d ., and £ 5 5 s . respectively . AT A MEETING of his party in the London County Council Bro . the Earl of Onslow announced his desire to resign his office as their leader , but at the unanimous wish of the members his lordship consented to act for another year .

THE ANNUAL general meeting of the Actors' Association will take place on the stage of the Lyceum on Friday , April 23 rd . Bro . Sir Henry Irving , who has always taken an active interest in this institution , will preside on the occasion . H . R . H . THE PRINCE OF WALES has consented to act as Honorary President of the International Congress of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers , which will be held at the Imperial Institute in commemoration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee .

BRO . THE DUKE OF FIFE has kindly consented to distribute the prizes , in connection with the educational classes and athletic clubs of the Central Young Men's Christian Association at Exeter Hall , Strand , W . C , on Monday , the 29 th instant , at S p . m .

THE BARONESS DE HIRSCH has forwarded to the Lord Mayor of London , who is president of the Jews' Hospital and Orphan Asylum at Norwood , a donation of £ 1000 towards the fund which is in course of being raised towards the opening of the new wing next month . A PETITION to Parliament praying the Government to secure the Crystal Palace and Grounds as a permanent place of recreation for the people of London , is being promoted by the Camberwell Vestry , who are inviting other public bodies to unite with them ¦ iii their appeal .

THE IST BATTALION Seaforth Highlanders embarked at Malta on board the Peninsular and Oriental Company ' s steamer Clyde for service in Crete . The vessel was berthed alongside the wharf at daybreak , and by 9 a . m . she was able . to ] Ieave the port on her voyage to Canea . BRO . OSCAR BARRETT ' S pantomime of " Aladdin " at Drury Lane will come to a close to-morrow ( Saturday ) evening , after an exceptionally brilliant season . For harmless fun and beautiful effects it has certainly not been surpassed , if indeed it has been equalled , by any production of its class .

IT IS SAID that at the Commemoration of the Queen ' s Diamond Jubilee the Royal Navy will be represented by some 3000 seamen and marines and that 150 cadets from the training ship at Dartmouth , for whom accommodation will be provided in the Royal Naval College , Greenwich , will also be present .

THE COUNTESS OF WARWICK has taken up her residence at 50 , South Audleystreet , having left Warwick Castle , where she had been staying since her accident in the hunting field . It is expected that Bro . the Earl of Warwick , who has been fishing in Ireland , and had some capital sport , will not come to town till the end of next month . THE DUKE OF CONNAUGHT arrived in Berlin on Saturday evening last , and was met at the station by the Ambassador , Sir Frank Lascelles , and the staff of the Embassy , His Royal Highness , who was attended by Bro . during his stay with the Empress Frederick , and was representative of the Queen at the centenary of the birth of the late Emperor William I . H . R . H . THE PRINCESS MARY , DUCHESS OF TECK , attended by Miss Tufnell and Maior Sebight , visited the Kensington Town Hall on Tuesday for the purpose of opening a three days' bazaar in aid of the work ot which the French Reformed Church , Bavswater , is the centre . Her Royal Highness was received on her arrival by the Countess of Harrowby and other adies , and before her departure was accorded a vote of thanks for her kindness in attending .

BRO . TURLE LEE ' S CONCERT . —The popular musical director of the Chough Musical Society ( Bro . Turle Lee ) , gave his annual concert on Friday , in the Great Hall of the Cannon-street Hotel . The hall was full . The programme was of a more varied character than the Choughs generally have placed before them , and the little change which had been effected in that respect was much appreciated by those present . The concert was in every way a great success .

THE ANNUAL DINNER of the Newsvendors' Benevolent and Provident Institution will be held under the presidency of the Earl of Crewe at the Holborn Restaurant on Thursday , the 24 th April . _ It has been decided to place all donations during 1 S 97 to the credit of the Royal Victoria Pension Fund , by way of commemorating the 60 th year of the Queen's reign . The Fund was inaugurated by the Queen 10 years ago , with a view to assisting the widows and orphans of newsvendors

As TO THIS open-air service on the 22 nd of June at St . Paul ' s Cathedral , its central feature will be a specially-composed Te Deum . The composition has been entrusted to Bro . Dr . Martin , Organist of St . Paul ' s , who is now engaged upon it . He will have some 250 voices , taken from the choirs of St . Paul ' s , St . George's , Windsor , Westminster Abbey , and the Chapel Royal , St . James's Palace . The choir will stand prominently on the west steps of St . Paul ' s , around the clergy . A special organ is to be erected in one of the recesses on one side of the West Front , and band instruments may be called into use to give volume of sound in the great open space .

THE DUCHESS OF ALBANY , attended by Bro . Sir Robertand Lady Collins , having first of all honoured the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress with her presence at luncheon at the Mansion House , inaugurated the new Ladies' Guild of the British and Foreign Sailor ' s Society . The meeting was held in the Egyptian Hall , under the presidency of the Lord Mayor , a guard of honour composed of Royal Naval Reserve men , now in

training onboard H . M . S . President , being drawn up in the saloon . Subscriptions to the amount of £ 879 were announced by the Secretary , and before the proceedings terminated , her Royal Highness received purses containing at least a sovereign each from some 400 juvenile collectors , to each of whom she handed a souvenir volume . Telegrams of sympathy with the movement were received from the Duke of Cambridge and Bro . the Duke of Fife .

THE QUEEN , accompanied by her Grand Ducal Highness Princess Louis of Battenberg and attended by the Countess of Antrim , drove over to Beaulieu on Monday afternoon and took tea with the Marchioness of Salisbury . On her return her Majesty drove slowly through the town in order that she might witness the annual festival . Viscount Cross is the Minister in attendance on her Majesty and had the honour of being included in the Royal dinner party .

TUB ANNUAL FESTIVAL of the Metropolitan Hospital was held in the Whitehall Rccms , Hotel Metropole , on Tuesday , the iSth inst . The _ Right Hon . the Lord Mayor presided , and was supported by Alderman and Sheriff Ritchie , and Bro . Sheriff Rogers , and at the high table were Lieut .-Col . Montefiore , Alderman Samuel , the Baron de Bush , Mr . Leopold Rothschild , Mr . Deputy Woodrow , Bro . H . Lovegrove , G . S . B . ; Bro . C J . Thomas , C . C . ; Mr . Coleman Jefries , and many others , about 140 in all . Some excellent speeches were made , and a substantial sum raised for this deserving charity .

THE GERMAN GYMNASTIC SOCIETY had a cold collation at their quarters in St . Pancras-road , on Monday evening , in honour of the centenary of the birth of the late Emperor William I . About 800 guests were present , among them being the German Ambassador , Prince Hohenlohe , a relative of the German Chancellor , the German Consul General in London , and a number of the German residents . The meeting was a very festive one , while an appropriate selection of music by an orchestra , led by Bro . Lieut . Dan Godfrey , added greatly to the pleasure of all present .

BRO . SIR J H . MAXWELL stated at the annual general meeting of the General Court of Governors of the Royal Caledonian Asylum that an anonymous donor had presented the institution with the sum of £ 12 , 000 in commemoration of the Queen ' s Diamond Jubilee , and as a memorial of the late Duke ! of Albany , who was a great friend of the Asylum . In making the announcement , Sir J . Maxwell remarked that the Duchess of Albany was one of the most generous patronesses of the Asylum , and it was further stated that at the next election in June , all applicants for the benefits of the institution would be elected without a ballot in celebration of the Jubilee .

LAW AND CITY COURTS COMMITTEE . —On Monday , the presentation banquet of this Committee to meet the Lord Mayor and Sheriffs took place at the Albion Tavern . It is the custom of the members to present the outgoing Chairman of the Committee with a token of appreciation , and this year the honour fell to Bro . Millar Wilkinson . The Chairman , in proposing the toast of the evening , referred to the excellent services rendered by the past Chairman . He concluded by presenting him , on behalf of the Committee , with a handsome piece of plate . Bro . Millar Wilkinson , in acknowledging the gift , modestly disclaimed any special merit on his own account , and ascribed all the successes of the Committee during the past year to the efforts of the legal members .

LORD MAYOR PHILLIPS , supported by the Lady Mayoress and the Bishop of London , presided at the annual public meeting , held at the Mansion House on Saturday last , of the Hospital Saturday Fund . The report showed the total income for the past year to have been £ 21 , 604 , which included workshop collection amounting to £ 10 , 337 , and street collection £ 4884 . Of this , close on £ 18 , 110 was awarded , as

against £ 17 , 650 the previous year . His lordship expressed his belief that the efforts that were being made under the auspices of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales for the London Hospitals would not in any way interlere with the Hospital Saturday or any other Charity , and a resolution wishing all success to his Royal Highness ' s effort on behalf of the London Hospitals was unanimously passed .

OSCAR BARRETT ' S pantomime of " Aladdin " at Drury Lane will come to a close to-morrow ( Saturday ) evening , after an exceptionally brilliant season . For harmless fun and beautiful effects it has certainly not been surpassed , if indeed it has been equalled , by any production of its class .

As TO THIS open-air service on the 22 nd of June at St . Paul ' s Cathedral , its central feature will be a specially-composed Te Deum . The composition has been entrusted to Bro . Dr . Martin , Organist of St . Paul ' s , who is now engaged upon it . He will have some 250 voices , taken from the choirs of St . Paul ' s , St . George's , Windsor , Westminster Abbey , and the Chapel Royal , St . James's Palace . The choir will stand prominently on the west steps of St . Paul ' s , around the clergy . A special organ is to be erected in one of the recesses on one side of the West Front , and band instruments may be called into use to give volume of sound in the great open space .

Sir Robertand Lady Collins , having first of all honoured the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress with her presence at luncheon at the Mansion House , inaugurated the new Ladies' Guild of the British and Foreign Sailor ' s Society .
