Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

seeing the I . P . M ., and his experience was that the longer they knew Bro . Evens the better they liked him . They were in a great measure indebted to the I . P . M . for removing the lodge from the Brixton Hall to its present place of meeting , and all agreed that the change was for the better . He trusted that when Bro . Evens took his place beside the

pillars of the lodge—the Past Masters—they would still have the benefit of his valuable advice and fraternal counsel . Bro . R . Evens , I . P . M ., having returned thanks , said that as long as he had been a member and had had any office g iven to him , he had always tried to carry out his duties to the best of his ability . It was a source of

satisfaction to hear he had carried out those duties in a manner creditable to the lodge . He took that opportunity of thanking the Past Masters , officers , and brethren for the many kindnesses shown him during his term of office . In speaking of the Past Masters , he thought it right he should single out one who had shown him great kindness in giving him

valuable instruction in the ceremonies—Bro . R . Poore , P . M . —whom they knew was always to the front in giving instruction to members of the lodge . He thanked them heartily for the collar and jewel presented to him , and which he should always prize very highly to look upon as a happy memento of his year of office .

Bro . C . Dearing , P . M ., replying for "The Visitors , " said that was his first visit to the lodge , and the first opportunity he had had of witnessing the excellent work . He was very much impressed with the W . M . ' s rendering of the initiation ceremony , and was sure the members had done well in selecting Bro . Kirkland to preside over them , for

he would doubtless prove an excellent Master and lead the lodge to prosperity . Several other visitors having returned thanks for the hospitality extended to them , and referred in eulogistic terms to the excellent working , the W . M . gave "The Past Masters , Installing Officer , Treasurer , and Secretary , "

referring to each seriatim , and the excellent work done by one and all in furthering the best interests of the lodge . Bro . Hy . Lovegrove , P . M ., P . P . G . Supt . of Works Middx ., Sec , said he could say very little new in response to the toast , except that he would continue to try and do his duty . There were several coincidences in connection with

the lodge well worth mentioning . The installation meeting generally fell on the Saturday nearest to the birthday of the first Master of the lodge , which position he was proud to have occupied . He was pleased to see present that evening their original Organist , Bro . Farrington . At the recent festival of the Brixton Lodge of Instruction and the

Benevolent Association attached thereto it was mentioned that since its foundation a sum of 1250 guineas had been paid to the Charities through its instrumentality . He could not claim much credit himself , but he had been a member many years and had watched its progress with interest . He thought they might say that in their lodge they had carried

out that portion at least of their duty . Bro . R . Poore , P . M ., Treas ., said he was a founder of the lodge of instruction and also of the Benevolent Association , but beyond mentioning the fact he did not think he need say more on the present occasion . He thanked the W . M . for the kind manner in which he had proposed his

health , and the brethren for the cordial way it was received . He also thanked the I . P . M . for his kind remarks . What he had done for the lodge had not been from any selfish motive , but for the good of the Brixton Lodge . He had always done his best to further its interests , and should always continue so to do . He hoped they would never

regret having elected him Treasurer , and although he had never occupied the position before , yet he knew a little about business matters and principles , and he hoped at the end of the year that the lodge would be in a flourishing condition . That was one of the orincinal obieriq that

induced him to take the office , and after the lodge was in a prosperous state , if any brother wished to occupy the post , ne ^ should be only too glad to vacate it in his favour . "The Officers" having been honoured , the Tyler ' s toast closed a pleasant meeting .

and H . V . Tyrrel were passed to the Second Degree , and Messrs . S . T . James , R . VV . Davey , and James Thomas were initiated . Bros . Thomas Reginald Grylls , W . M . 75 ; Wallace VV . J . Sharpe , j $ ; F . Ernest Remfry , VV . M . 1529 , P . P . G . P . South Wales ( West Division ) ; and H . Williams Hockin , J . W . 331 , were elected as Cornwall members . The W . M . then vacated the chair , and Bro . W . George raised

Bros . T . Hawken and A . Johnson to the Sublime Degree of M . M ., Bro . Curnow giving the traditional history . The W . M . then took the chair , and notice was given for the election of Bro . E . Passmore as a joining member , Bro . A . Hele Chilcott , W . M . 331 , as a Cornwall member , and a gentleman as an initiate . Apologies for absence were read from Bro . the Earl of

Mount Edgcumbe , who was in Paris , and from Bros . J . H . Thomas , P . M ., S . W . ; J . Chester , P . M . ; and J . O . Widger , who were absent because of illness . The brethren afterwards dined together , and spent a most pleasant evening , the W . M . presiding with his usual geniality and ability . The Treasurer , Bro . Lake , in responding as an officer ,

said that that was the only county lodge yet founded in London , and considering the limited area from which their members were drawn he thought they had every reason to be highly gratified with the result . The Secretary , Bro . Greenwood , in responding , said he had heard it rumoured that that lodge was founded for the special convenience of Cornish brethren in the City . That

was not so , for their members hailed from so far as Wood Green on the north , Beckenham on the south , Plumstead on the east , and Maida Hill on the west . Of the 35 fully subscribing members , one was a peer of the realm , one a baronet , three were physicians , three were clergymen , three were schoolmasters , & c , thus showing that interest in the lodge was anything but monopolised by brethren who were " something in the City . " He congratulated the VV . M . on

the success of this very young lodge , and was pleased to find that not only the number but also the quality of the initiates was most satisfactory . A lodge was a kind of family , and no Mason should be willing to admit into his lodge any gentleman whom he was not willing to admit into his home . Other toasts followed , and the meeting was enlivened by some excellent vocal and instrumental music by Bros . Bullen , Myles , and others .

enamelled founder ' s jewel , and spoke as to the valuable services which Bro . and H .
