A capital programme of music was arranged by Bro . Enos Andrew , P . P . G . Org ., who acted as accompanist all the evening . During the progress of the banquet , Bro . Wright VVood , P . He referred to him as the " father " of the lodge , having been one of its founders , and one of its most active workers since its consecration 25 ycars ago . On behalf of the

Newton had given him , and who was a guide , philosopher , and friend to all youn ^ Masons , and one in whom they might , in case of requirement , appeal to with safe assurance that their conlidence would never be betrayed . He was a worker in the Craft of the highest eminence , as had often been recognised by visiting brethren , and his urbanity and geniality had endeared him to them all . They would lis pleased if he would accept the jewel , and prize it as not the least in value of the many jewelsof whicii

he was the proud possessor . Bro . Newton , who was received with rapturous applause , responded to the toast with feelings of emotion , and gave a very full and interesting account of the formatkn of the lodge , how it got its designation of " Waverley , " and its history up to the present time , lie was exceedingly proud to be the " falliei " of thu lodge which had undergone many vicissitudes , but was now , he was happy to say , in its most prosperous statu financially , numerically , and as regards the efficiency of its ollicers . He accepted thi jewel with the greatest pleasure , and assured them he would prize it above all his possessions , and that wherever he went it would always be worn by him . Hc tendered to the brethren his warmest and grateful thanks for their generosity .

Lodge was opened and the minutes confirmed . Bro . S . W . Newcomb was passed to the Second Degree , and ( Messrs . J . | H . Hartland and F . W . A . Parker were initiated into Freemasonry by the W . M ., the charge in the First Degree being impressively delivered by Bro . Gwyn , I . P . M ., by request of the W . M . A Committee was appointed to consider what form a testimonial should take in order to recognise the services of Bro . James Stevens , P . M ., who had acted as Secretary for the last three years . The resignation of Bro . G . Jenkins , the first initiate of the Iodge , who had rendered valuable service as Organist for the past iS years , was accepted with regret , owing to ill health , and

on the proposition of the W . M . he was unanimously elected an honorary member . A notice of motion by Bro . Guyton , P . M ., with reference to the formation of a Royal Arch Chapter , was deferred . Lodge was closed , and the brethren adjourned to banquet under the genial presidency of the W . M . The usual toasts were subsequently honoured . The VV . M . in proposing * ' H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., " announced that a telegram had been received from his Royal Highness , thanking the lodge for the congratulatory telegram sent .

Bro . J . K . Gwyn , I . P . M ., in proposing "The Health of the W . M ., " said he fell particularly honoured that the toast had been entrusted to him . When he proposed the health of their W . M . last month after having installed him , he said he was convinced they had a brother in the chair who was not only jealous of the honour and reputation 0 ! the lodge , but would also prove a most able worker . That night they had seen Bro . Brookman's working , and they would all agree that what he ( the I . P . M . ) said was thoroughly justified . There was a great deal of work falling to the W . M ., buthe would doubtless exceed their expectations , and they would therefore drink to the health and

prosperity of their esteemed W . M . Bro . R . Brookman , W . M ., thanked the I . P . M . for his kind remarks , andsaid ^ he was pleased to hear he had given satisfaction on his first night ' s work in the chair of the lodge . He could not impress too strongly upon the brethren the necessity of devoting two hours a week to a lodge of instruction . He had attended very regularly , but to take the chair in a lodge of instruction and in his mother lodge were two different things . However , he felt more at ease as he proceeded , and if he had given them satisfaction he was amply repaid . "Ihe Initiates" was next given , and duly responded to .

The W . M . then submitted "The Visitors , " and hoped they had had a pleasant evening , both in the lodge and at the festive board . The visiting brethren present all replied to the toast , and expressed the pleasure the visit had afforded them .

Other toasts were given , including "The last Masters , before the brethren separated . Several brethren assisted in the musical programme , including Bro . C . Ortner , whose fine rendering of two bass songs was heartily appreciated b y all present . The following is a copy of the telegram received from the M . W . G . M ., referred to above * .

"To the W . M . 'The Great City , ' 1426 , "Cannon Street Hotel . " 1 thank the brethren for their kind congratulations . "ALBERT EDWARD . "

Waverley Lodge , No . 1322 . The 25 th installation meeting of this lodge was held on Thursday , the 31 st ult ., at the Oueen ' s Hotel , Ashton-under-Lyne . As this was the quarter of a century , it naturally was a source of great interest . The event brought together a large number of brethren . Promptly at the hour appointed , Bro . Arthur Sumner , W . M ., opened the lodge , when the minutes of the previous meeting and also of an emergency were read and confirmed . The Auditors' report was considered and proved to be very

satisfactory . The W . M . at this point requested Bro . J . M . Jones , P . M ., to take the chair for the purpose of installing the W . M . elect , " Bro . Walter Rawlinson . He appointed as Installing Officers Bros . W . Newton , P . P . G . D ., as S . W . ; John Smith , P . P . G . D ., as J . W . ; G . S . Smith , P . P . G . Org ., as Org . ; and G . W . Davis , VV . Eastwood gave the addressis to the Master , Wardens , and brethren , and the installation ceremony was brought to a close . After all business had

been attended to and " Hearty good wishes" had been expressed by the numerous visitors present , the lodge was closed . Subsequently a banquet was given , presided over by Bro . Walter Rawlinson , W . M ., and we should imagine by the manner he conducted the proceedings , the brethren of the Waverley Lodge have made a very happy choice . The loyal and other toasts were heartily given and responded to .

A capital programme of music was arranged by Bro . Enos Andrew , P . P . G . Org ., who acted as accompanist all the evening . During the progress of the banquet , Bro . Wright VVood , P . M ., proposed " Thc Health of Bro . Walter Newton , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., " in eulogistic and graceful terms . He referred to him as the " father " of the lodge , having been one of its founders , and one of its most active workers since its consecration 25 ycars ago . On behalf of the

brethren he presented Bro . Newton , amid loud applause , with a combined Past Master ' s and Treasurer ' s jewel of solid gold , ot beautiful design and exquisite workmanship , on the back of which was engraved the following inscription , viz .: " Presented to Brother W . Newton , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., by thebrethren , as a mark of their esteem for services rendered as Treasurer for 15 years in succession , and in commemoration of the 25 th anniversary of the Lodge . 31 st October , i . S ' -i" -. "

Bro . Samuel Giundy , S . VV ., supported the proposition on behalf of the junior officers and brethren of the lodge , and expressed his gratification that association with Bro .
