SUPERSEDING THE HORSE . —Between steam , electricity , petroleum , and the cycle , the horse's ordinary occupation must soon be entirely gone . Even if the long-promised flying machine does not some day become an accomplished fact , he will certainly not be necessary to the every-day locomotion of the future . For the mere purpose of exercise he can be dispensed with by others besides the cyclist , since mechanical ingenuity has

even provided a parlour " gee gee , " which faithfully reproduces his trot , his canter , and his stimulating gallop by the pressure of a lever . All round , in fact , the horse is being superseded . Messrs . Vigor and Co ., of 21 , Baker-street , Portman-square , London , are the sole patentees and manufacturers . We have visited their establishment , and were very pleased with the invention . The price is very moderate , and it is within the means of all classes .

THERE ARE FEW BETTER firms of Upholsterers and House Furnishers in London , or , for the matter of that , throughout the whole country , than that of Messrs . Hewetson , Milner , and Thexton ( Limited ) . It was established in 1 S 25 , and a visit to their premises at 200 , 203 , 204 , 2 li , 212 , 213 , 214 , 215 , Tottenham Court-road , VV ., or even a mere examination of their illustrated catalogue will suffice to show that it is not possible for intending purchasers—a young couple about to set up a house of their own , or those who may wish to renew their furniture—to go anywhere and obtain goods of a better quality

at reasonable prices , or , as the saying is , better value for their money . The catalogue , of which the sixth edition has recently been issued , contains upwards of 200 pages filled with designs and patterns of every description of household furniture and appliances ranging from the plain but necessary coalscuttle , or fender and fire irons , to the most elaborate suites of dining-room , drawing-room , boudoir , library , or bedroom furniture . The different separate articles , or sets of articles , range in price , according to quality ,

for those which can be purchased by people of moderate means to those which the wealthiest will not disdain to buy . We have gone carefully through the catalogue and at the same time we have had the opportunity of inspecting the various goods in stock at the establishment in Tottenham Court-road , and we have no hesitation in strongly recommending both pater and mater familias to go , see , and judge for themselves ; we have every confidence they will be pleased with such purchases as they may think fit to make . *

THE OPINION OF EVERY KNOI . ISIIMAN is that lihertv of speech anil action is the birthright ° * every tree man . " llrilons never shall be slaves " is one of tbe most popular of our national songs , ami , as a matter of fact , it is impossible for slavery to exist under the protecting shadow ' nl the Uritisli Hag . In the same manner , men cannot remain btntml by the tyrannic shackles oi disease , if they will place themselves miller Ihe healing influence of Holloway ' s Pills and Ointmeiit . Their success ill all parts of the world is now a familiar stury , and it is only necessary t ° say here , there is no known disorder that cannot be speedily cured or relieved by them .

Her Gracious Majesty has been pleased to inspect and commend one of these unique machines which , in the opinion of the manufacturers , will give an impetus to the typewriter business in our distant possessions .

THE PATENT of Bro . W . W . B . Beach , M . P ., as Provincial Grand Master of Mark Masons of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight , has been renewed for another three years . Brethren generally throughout the province regret exceedingly that their Provincial Grand Master has been laid up for some weeks owing to an injury sustained through the kick of a horse , but they will be glad to learn that he is recovering , though but slowly .

According to present arrangements , the Queen and Court will leave the Castle to r Osborne on Tuesday next . To-morrow ( Saturday ) being the 34 th anniversary of the death of H . R . H . the Prince Consort , the usual service . will be held in the Royal Mausoleum , and will be attended by the Queen and the members of her family .

H . R . H . THE PRI NCE OF WALES met with a somewhat serious accident whilst out shooting on Thursday on Sir Edward Lawson's estate at Hall Barn , Bucks . About an hour after commencing shooting as the Prince was firing at a bird which was almost directly above him , some grains of powder were blown into his right eye . Assistance was sent for to the nearest dwelling-house , and on the arrival of Dr . Kennedy , of Beaconsfield , hot fomentations and also cocaine were applied , with good effect , in allaying the pain . His Royal Highness , after dinner , returned to to wn , from Taplow , by special train .

Buo . ALDERMAN MORRISON , of Eastbourne , who was widel y known and beloved as an enthusiastic member of the Craft , died on Wednesday , at his residence , aged 52 . The immediate cause was dropsy . Bro . Morrison was a Past Grand Officer , a Provincial Warden of the Mark , Past Prov . G . Warden of the Craft in Sussex , as well as occupying distinguished positions in many superior Degrees . He was an Alderman of East Sussex County Council , also of Eastbourne , where he three times filled the office of Mayor . The funeral takes place on Monday , at half-past 10 , at St . Saviour ' s Church , Eastbourne .
