MASONIC BALL IN LIVERPOOL .

The Lodge of Israel , No . 1502 , Liverpool , held its annual hall in aid of the Benevolent Fund connected with the lodge , at the Adelphi Hotel , on Tuesday , the 3 rd inst . This fund has been one of the most satisfactory in connection with lodges _ in the province of West Lancashire , which has for its object the relief of indigent members and

the widows and orphans of members . The Israel members and their families always look towards this ball as not only one of the most enjoyable in the festive season , but also for the addition it usually makes to its funds , and thus enabling the Committee to relieve their necessitous to a substantial extent . In the past year , unfortunately , distress has been active , and the Committee have boldly met the occasions :

in one case the amount ot £ 100 was voted , which , had it not been forthe revivifying effects of this vote , the applicant would probably have succumbed to a nameless terror . Although this lodge looks so well towards its members and their families , yet it does not confine its charity to this one fund . The members of the Lodge of Israel are constant supporters of the West Lancashire Masonic Educational

Institution , the Hamer Benevolent Fund , and has in the 11 years of its _ existence sent at least 10 Stewards to the London Festivals , so that , like the majority of members of the Jewish faith , they do not confine their charity to those in their midst , but cheerfully endeavour to extend their helping hand to all . Practically this ball was one of the most enjoyable of the series .

The company numbered about 150 , and the arrangements were of a perfect character , thanks to the exertions of Bros . D . Gabrielsen , W . M ., Chairman of the Ball Committee ; A . A . Lyons , Treas . ; A . Kirkpatrick , Hon . Sec . ; Maurice ; Hart , P . P . G . D . D . C , who acted as M . C , assisted by J . F . Davis ; M . Aronsberg , P . M ., Capt . of the Stwds . ;

MASONIC CELEBRATION AT ALTRINCHAM .

Monday , the 2 nd inst ., was a " red letter day" in the annals of the Stamford Lodge , 1045 . On that memorable occasion it attained its majority , and , Masonically , we wish it "Many happy returns . " Judging from the vigour it has displayed of late , there is every prospect of this

being realised , a prospect upon which every good Mason in the province who has Masonry at heart will pride himself . The 2 nd inst . was also memorable in that it celebrated the continuance in office of one of its oldest members , the now venerable Secretary , whom we wish a long and happy continuance . He was on that day presented with a portrait , painted in oils , of himself , as also

an inkstand and other accessories , which will serve to remind him of his honourable connection with the Stamford Lodge . The portrait has been painted by Mr . D . Shoesmith , of Hale-road , Altrincham , and as an artistic production is worthy of the highest praise . Bro . Newhouse is represented in his regalia as a Provincial Grand Officer , but the admirable way in which the expression of the

features has been caught is in every way creditable to the artist . Indeed , during the whole of the time the picture has been on exhibition has there been anything but commendation of it , and in addition it may be noted that the lodge has secured a duplicate which will be used at its various Masonic gatherings . The inkstand and accessories have been supplied by Mr . Eustace George Parker ,

George-street , Altrincham , and are of an elaborate and sumptuous character . The St . John's Day of the Stamford Lodge also witnessed the installation as W . M . of Bro . Josiah Drinkwater , whose career has been one alike honourable to himself and ; the lodge . The ceremony was performed by Bro . S . G . O . von Sturmer , assisted by Bros . Baker and

Siddeley . The following were afterwards invested as officers for the ensuing year : Bros . S . G . O . von Sturmer , I . P . M . ; Charles Bosustow , S . W . ; the Hon . Alan de Tatton Egerton , M . Heathcote was unable to be present to make the presentation , but he would

endeavour to do his best , as he always had done in connection with Masonry . For the past 20 years Bro . Newhouse had done his work in such a methodical and efficient manner that it was only right and fitting that the brethren should present him with some little token of esteem and affection . 1 his had taken the form of a portrait of himself , and he might go further and say that the brethren had so much

esteem for Bro . Newhouse that they had secured a duplicate ° ' it , which they intended to keep in their lodge , and this Would keep his memory green amongst them for along time to come . He hoped that Bro . Newhouse would be able to hand down that portrait to his children's children for generations to come , and that they would be able to look upon it and see that he had not gone through the world Without

making his mark in Masonry , and having an evidence of the deep feeling of regard , esteem , and affection > n which he was held . Bro . Kirk concluded by reading an address , and stated that not a single member's name was "Kent from the subscription list . « ro . NEWHOUSE , in reply , said that Bro . Kirk had urawn almost too flattering a picture in reference to himself n the past . He thanked them heartily . That day was of Meat

( Applause . ) The Stamford Lodge , like many others , had had its periods of sickness ; but under the good nursing of their Treasurer , Bro . Siddeley , they would all agree that the older it got the stronger it became . For the handsome present they had made him that day he heartil y thanked them , and he hoped it would pass down as an heirloom to his son , who he hoped would follow the footsteps of his

father in Masonry . ( Applause . ) After the various ceremonies , the brethren sat down to the banquet in the Town Hall , which was provided in an unexceptionable manner by Mrs . Harvey , the hostess of the Unicorn Hotel . In addition to the W . M . and his officers noted above , the following brethren were present : Bros . W . Nicholls , P . M ., P . P . G . P . 041 ; J . The La Tolerance Lodge Ladies' Banquet And Ball.

THE LA TOLERANCE LODGE LADIES ' BANQUET AND BALL .

A most enjoyable gathering was held in the Freemasons ' Hall , on Thursday , the 5 th inst ., under the auspices of the W . M ., Bro . John Elvin , and officers of this select lodge , and the result was a complete success . We have previously expatiated upon the desirability on all possible occasions of

admitting ladies to our festivities whenever practicable , as we are ^ firmly convinced by adopting such a course Masonry and Freemasons would be regarded a deal more favourably by the fair sex than often is the case , simply from the fact that our wives and sisters would then have an opportunity of witnessing for themselves the class of men we mix with , whom they often hear about , but probably seldom see , in

addition to which there is , or should be amongst all Freemasons , an additional pleasure and satisfaction in the knowledge that they are contributing towards the ladies ' enjoyment , by giving up one ordinary evening ' s routine , or , in other words , practising a little self denial and placing themselves under restraint for the benefit of the fair sex . We understand it is some three or fouryears since the La

Tolerance Lodge gave a banquet to the ladies , but as this has been so successful , we trust each succeeding W . M . may follow Bro . Elvin's example . Prior to the banquet the lodge was opened in due form by the VV . M . and the following officers : Bros . T . Smale , S . W . ; C . Burt , J . W . ; James Kench , P . M ., P . G . P ., Treas . ; J . B . Sly , P . M ., Hon . Sec . ; L . C Langdon , T .

Bicknell , S . D . ; W . G . Fenn , J . D . ; A . Smith , l . G . ; J . W . Andrews , C . S . There were also present P . M . 's Burmeister , Child , Humphrey , and Skinner ; Bros . Vorley , Tidy , Clear , Webb , and Lyons . Visitors : Bros . Byron Ridge , P . M . 463 ; G . L . Kerrick , 321 ; Turle Lee , J . W . 1926 ; G . H . Williams , 165 S ; G . R . Ousey , W . M . 59 ; B . P . Jesse , P . M . 155 C ; J . Vicary , 1 S 0 ; D . Cavd ,

1079 ; Cotterell , S . W . 1 S 37 ; w . Pocock , 9 ; P . J . George , S . D . 957 ; R . R . Lisenden , S . W . 317 ; M . J . Mumford , 153 S : ; Lattreille , P . M . 1260 ; Lyons , 1765 ; and others . After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read and confirmed , Bro . G . L . Lyons , of the Trinity College Lodge , was balloted for to become a joining member of the

lodge , and unanimously elected . _ A dispensation was read from the M . W . G . M . authorising the brethren to wear Masonic clothing at the banquet and ball , and , there being no further business , the lodge was closed in peace and harmony , and the brethren adjourned to the drawing room to receive the ladies . During . the " mauvais quart de heure " Bro . Turle Lee beguiled the time by discoursing sweet

sounds on the pianoforte , and at 7 . 30 the company betook themselves to the banquet room , where a most recherche banquet had been prepared for them , and which gave every satisfaction . During dessert the W . M . proposed the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , all of which were enthusiastically received and responded to . Subsequently the W . M . proposed the

toast of the evening , viz ., " I he Ladies , " which " qui va sans dire " was heartily drunk , and responded to by Bro . TIDY in appropriate terms . Bro . LANGDON , I . P . M ., then proposed "The Health of the W . M ., Bro . John Elvin , " in eulogistic terms , dilating upon his courtesy and urbanity with all he came in contact , and also upon his ability to perform the various Masonic

ceremonies , and his zeal for l < reemasonry generally . The toast was drunk with every manifestation of pleasure , and Bro . ELVIN replied in a few well-chosen sentences , and then proposed "The Health of the Visitors , " which was responded to by Bros . BYRON , RIDGE , FAIRCHILD , J ESSE , STEVENS , and R . R . LISENDEN ( Freemason ) . " The Past Masters and Officers " were also proposed

by the W . M ,, and responded to by Bros . BUR . MER . P . M . ; E . HUMPHREY , P . M . ; T . SMALE , S . VV . ; and BURT , J . W . The intervals between the toasts were enlivened with some excellent singing by Mesdames Annie Matthews , Spencer Jones , and Bro . L . G . Lyons , whilst Bro . Turle Lee

rendered valuable service at the piano . The company repaired after the banquet to the drawing room , where coffee was served , and subsequently to the ball room , where a capital progamme of dance music was executed by Bro . Saunders' band , the company indulging in their terpsichorean revels until the small hours of the morning .

The bust , which has recently been placed in Poet's Corner , Westminster Abbey , in memory of Bro . Robert Burns , was unveiled on Saturday last in the presence of a strong representative gathering of Scotchmen by the Earl of Rosebery ; the Dean of Westminster , as well as his lordship , delivering an address appropriate to the event .

Masonic Celebration At Altrincham.
