Shipton , C . N . Wedge , and C . Cook , which proved unanimous , and they were initiated by Bro . H . Cornford , W . M ., in an impressive and perfect manner . It was resolved that a letter of condolence be sent to Lord Lathom , expressing the deepest sympathy of the brethren , and also a letter of sympathy to Bro . Runacres , P . M ., late Treasurer , in his severe illness . Three candidates were proposed for initiation and also a joining member .
The lodge closed , the brethren adjourned to an excellent banquet , supplied by Mrs . Venables , the proprietress , in her usual excellent style . The customary loyal and Masonic toasts were ably presented and received , after which The W . M . presented the toast of "The Pro G . M ., Deputy G . M ., and the rest of the G . Officers , Present and Past , " in eulogistic terms , and paid the highest tribute of respect to the memory of the late Pro G . M ., the Earl of Lathom .
The toast was ably responded to by Bro . J . Mason , P . G . Std . Br ., who said with pride that he was delighted to be associated with the Grand Oflicers . He could never forget the late Pro G . M ., with whom he had been connected for many years , and he was piesent with him at the consecration of the Temple of the Surrey Masonic Hall . He was one whom to know was to revere , love , and esteem , and none were more competent to carry out whatever duties he was called upon to perform . Of Eatl Amherst none was more able to succeed to the Pro G . M ., and the Earl of Warwick to the Deputy j and it was his earnest desire that they should be under their able guidance for many years .
Bro . R . Peachey , / . P . M ., next presented the toast of "The W . M ., " and said there was no brother better qualified in the lodge to perform the duties and guide their destinies than Bro . Cornford , proof of which had been exemplified thatjevening . He ventured to prophesy , if he might , that the year would be an unqualified success , and , lor his part , he would endeavour to assist all in his power . In leply , the W . M ., who received an ovation , said he was almost overpowered with such kii . d words and eulogiums , but he would endeavour bis utmost to carry out the duties as they should be . He tendered his best thanks for their confidence in placing

him in such a proud position after eight years since his initiation . He never contemplated that he should succeed to the Mastership , but he had made the ritual his greatest study and pleasure , and success had attended . It was , indeed , the proudest moment in his life and he expressed his most cordial thanks for their very great kindness . The toast of "The Installing Master" was next given by the W . M ., who said in his opinion the manner the installation ceremony had ¦ been performed had given the greatest satisfaction and pleasure to the brethren , and also for the manner he had conducted the affairs of the lodge during the past year and it gave the W . M . great
pleasure to present the Past Master ' s jewel so well earned , with the hope that he might live many years to wear the same in the Earl of Lathom Lodge . Bro . Peachy , I . P . M ,, with many thanks , said it was , indeed , a proud day to him in Freemasonry . A few months ago he had no idea of installing , but through the able assistance of Bro . C . Plant , P . M ., Preceptor , he had been able to rise to the occasion and instal his successor . For the handsome jewel he assured the brethren he should look upon it with pride and pleasure as their reward for his services and he hoped to wear it as they earnestly desired .
The toast of "The Initiates , " received at the hands of theW . M . words of strong recommendation and advice , and was replied to by Bros . Shipton , Cook , and Wedge in an able manner . Bro . H . Cornford , W . M ., next proposed the toast of "The Visitors , " giving them all the hearty welcome , for which the lodge was noted . This was replied to most forcibly by Bros . Whitaker , Dawson , and Plant , Preceptor of the lodge of instruction ,- and T . Hobley , W . M . 1320 . The toast of " ihe Past Masters , Treasurer , and Secretary , " was given in laudatory
terms by the W . M ., and responded to by Bros . Cannon , Shipton , Lamare , and Peachey , That of "The Officers " received at the hands of the W . M . the eulogium it deserved from their excellent work , and was responded to by the S . W ., J . W ., and J . D . The Tyler ' s toast closed one of the most enjoyable meetings in the lodge . The excellent programme of music was arranged and directed by Bro . Frank Swinford , W . M . 2272 , P . Prov . G . Org . Middx ., assisted by Bros . Roland Henry , Arthur Court , Fred W . The report of the Audit Committee , showing a total income from all sources of £ I 576 ' 5 s . gd . and expenditure of £ 1574 17 s . Sd ., of which over £ 700 falls to the cost of preparing and issuing the printed Transactions of the lodge , and another £ 200 for posting them to the members , was received and adopted . Votes of condolence were passed with Bro . F . J . W . Crowe on his serious family bereavement , and of
congratulation to Bro . Hamon lc Strange on his installation as Prov . G . M . of Norfolk and to Bro . Sir Francis Boileau on his installation as Superintendent of the same province . The exhibits were of unusual interest . An old hand embroidered on satin apron , bearing , besides the symbols usually occurring , the distinctive feature of the Mark Digree on the flap , with the name of S . Osborne , No . 1 , under the flap , gave rise to some . discussion , the Secretary venturing the guess that it dated from last century and that the Np . 1 referred probably to No , 1 Cork . Bro . General Terry exhibited and presented to the lodge a
vile and scandalous libel on the " Irish Freemasons and their Continental Brothers , " with sensational pictures , the work of some contemptible Roman Catholic enemy ot the Order . Bro . G . W . Pavitt exhibited and also presented to the lodge a copy , in splendid preservation , of the somewhat rare skit on the Craft , the engraving known generally as " Molly , " but entitled " The Freemasons Surprized , a true History from a Canterbury Lodge . " The thanks of the lodge were tendered to Bros . Terry and Pavitt . The W . M . addressed the lodge in eloquent and feeling terms on the recent
death of their Past Master , Bro . Professor T . Hiyter Lewis , giving details of his remarkable professional career , and bearing just testimony to the sweetness of his disposition , charm of manner , and extensive learning-. The Secretary made a report of his visit , as delegate of the lodge , to Antwerp on the 20 th November last , accompanied by Bro . the Rev . C . E . L . Wright , on the occasion of the memorial meeting which the combined four lodges of that city hold every seven years in honour of those of their brethren who have passed to the Grand Lodge above
during the interval . His description of the ceremony , at which over 500 brethren attended , including the Grand Masters of Belgium , Holland , and Luxembourg , evoked much interest , and the special honour rendered to the representatives of the lodge , as well as the great kindness shown to them in every way , was highly appreciated , the Secretary being ordered to officially convey ; the thanks of the lodge to the Master presiding over the Antwerp lodges on that occasion . Bro . G . W . Speth then read a long paper on the remarkable history of the English lodge at Bordeaux , founded in 1732 whose
, last number on the English lodge lists was 204—the only surviving lodge in France of English origin—and which still bears as part of its title the last number , 204 , accorded to it by our Grand Lodge . The origin of the paper was the discovery by Bro , Gjrdan Hills among his family papers of letters and other documents from the lodge to its London representative , Baron J . Talbot Dillon , revealing a most important part uf the
history of the lodge , which had hitherto been unknown to Masonic students . 6 > ving to the lateness ol the hour , no discussion followed , as is usual in the lodge when a piper \ c read , and , even had time permitted , it is difficult to see how a discussion could have arisen , as the writer refrained from all theorising , contenting himself with eliciting the facts as contained in the voluminous documentary evidence lately made accessible . The usual vote of thanks was heartily accorded the reader , and the brethren then adjourned to the Holborn Restaurant for dinner .
