and Dr . Lithgow . A donation of five guineas was voted to the "Shadwell Clerke Trust . " A rare print of the " Scald Miserable Masons , " the gift of Bro . Professor Hayter Lewis , was exhibited . Bro . Dr . Benjamin Ward Richardson , F . R . S ., read a paper on the "Masonic Genius of Robert Burns . " Those brethren who have had the pleasure of ever hearing

Bro . Richardson will not need to be told how poetically the subject was treated , and how exquisitely the lecture was delivered . The lecturer depicted the influence of Masonry in the life , character , and career of the poet , and the share it had had in inspiring certain of his poems , whose Masonic ori"in was not at lirst plainly evident . From that he passed

to a review of the obviously Masonic productions , and concluded by a panegyric on the general Masonic tendency of the bulk of his work . He was listened to with wrapt attention from beginning to end , and as the completeness of his treatment left little scope for discussion , the subsequent remarks of the brethren were necessarily confined to expressions of approval , admiration , and the usual vote of thanks .

United Northern Counties Lodge ( No . 212 S ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge was held on Tuesday , 1 st inst ., at the Inns of Court Hotel . Bro . T . Uateman Fox , W . M ., was unfortunately not present , on account of the serious illness of Mrs . Fox , and a telegram was rprpived from him to that effect . In the absence of

the W . M ., Bro . j . S . Cumberland , the first W . M . of the lodge , was requested to take the chair . Bro . Cumberland therefore opened the lodge , and after the preliminaries had been gone through , he installed Bro . H . J . Giller , P . P . G . P . Herts , as W . M . for the ensuing year . Smithson then referred to the great loss sustained by Freemasonry in the death of Col . Shadwell Clerke . Bro . G . J . Wood proposed " The Provincial Grand Masters and their Deputies of the Northern Provinces . " Bro . Henry Smith , D . P . G . M . West Yorkshire , responded , and said these brethren had the credit of being a very earnest body , and they had endeavoured to discharge their duty as faithfully as possible and to keep up the good name

of Masonry in their own provinces and in Grand Lodge of England . This credit they had had for a long time , and he hoped they would still continue to have it by the strictest attention to duty . Bro . J . S . Cu . n ' j . i \ j . nd , P . M ., proposed " The Masonic Charities . " Bro . W . Masters , P . M ., Sec , replied . This lodge was very nearly Vice-President of the Boys' School . The Girls '

School nearly four years ago got a subscription of 450 , 000 . The Boys' School last year , under the Pro Grand Master , was very successful . He ( Bro . Masters ) had had much to do with this Institution the last four or five years . It had gone through the lire and had come out well tried . It was doing its duly as it ought to do . It had a splendid head master , and efficient assistant masters . A splendid education was being given there . The Council were doing good

work in the School . The science and art department was very successful and obtained the Government grant last year of over ^ ioo . He invited the brethren to enquire into the great work which all the Masonic Institutions were doing . Bros . General Laurie , Mickley , St . Clair , and Dixon responded to the toast of " The Visitors . " Bro . Cumberland proposed "The W . M . " and expressed

great regret at Bro . Fox s absence , but more especially for the cause . Bro . Giller , W . M ., replied , and joined with Bro . Cumberland in his expressions of regret and sorrow for the absence of the I . P . M . For himself he might say he was not well , and a few hours before thought he would not be able to attend . It was against his wish that he became W . M . of this lodge , but he did not like a gap to occur . He felt

certain that , assisted by his officers and the Past Masters , the work of the lodge would go on well . He certainly desired to do his duty . Bro . W . H . Bullock , P . M ., replied to the toast of "The Past Masters , " and said he should do his best to assist the W . M ., and promote the success of the United Northern Counties Lodge . The other toasts followed , and the brethren separated after passing a most pleasant and successful evening .

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and

conlirmed . The Auditors' report was not complete , but the 'Treasurer gave a rough idea of the finances of the lodge , showing that there was a good balance , even after the very handsome sums which have been contributed to Charity . During the year the sum of £ S 4 has been sent to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , and ^ . 110 to the Royal Masonic Benevulent Institution . Charity seems to be the

motto of the brethren of this lodge , but it is scarcely to be wondered at when we find Bro . K . Newhouse , P . G . Sec , the Secretary of this prosperous lodge . The W . M . elect was presented to the Installing Master by Bro . F . R . B . Lindsell , P . J . G . W . Bros . Potter , I . P . M ., acted as S . W . ; Siddeley , P . P . A . G . D . C , as J . W . ; and Worthington , P . M ., as I . G . A Board of Installed Masters was opened

and Bro . Blunsum was installed , which ceremony was performed in a highly commendable manner . The newlyinstalled W . M . invested his officers for the ensuing year as follows : Bros . The business having been concluded , and "Hearty good wishes " expressed from a large number of visitors , the lodge was

closed . Subsequently the brethren adjourned to the Unicorn Hotel , adjoining the Town Hall , where a banquet of rare excellence had been provided by the proprietress . The usual loyal and Masonic toasts were given and received with enthusiasm . Bro . Worthington , in proposing the toast of "The Worshipful Master , '' said fur years Bro . Blunsum had been a

thorough hard woiker in . Masonry , and more especially for that lodge j his progress had been steady , and he had the enjoyment of knuwing he had filled every office in the lodge . During that time he had endeared himself to every member of the lodge , and he was quite sure that he would perform lhe duliesof W . M . as well as he had done in all the others he had undertaken . He concluJcd by wishing him every success in his office during the year , and that he 111 'glit have good health .

Provincial Meetings.

The Worshipful Master , in reply , thanked all for the honour they had conferred upon him , and the hearty manner they had received the toast . He had reached the height of his ambition in becoming W . M . He had always done his best to carry the duties that had fallen to him in a satisfactory way , and he should endeavour to uphold the dignity of the chair in as able a manner as his predecessors

had done , lor he felt quite sure he should be well supported by his officers . The VV . M . proposed "The Health of the I . P . M . and the Past Masters . " He said the members knew what Bro . Worthington had done , and they had seen him perform part of the installation ceremony that day in a very creditable manner . He would also take that opportunity of thanking Bro . Lindsell for the able manner he had installed

him into the chair . He said they had a glorious list of Past Masters who had all set the juniors noble examples , especially as to the working , and the greatest compliment he could now pay them was to say they should try and walk in their footsteps . The Past Masters responded . The toasts of "The Charities" and "The Visiting Brethren " were proposed and responded to before the proceedings terminated .

and Dr .

Bro . T . Uateman Fox , W . the W . M ., Bro . j . S . Cumberland , the first W . M . of the lodge , was requested to take the chair . Bro .

P . A . G . D . C , as J .
