On the motion of Bro . J . Terry , seconded by the W . M ., a hearty vote of thanks was passed , and ordered to be recorded on the minutes , to Bro . C . F . Hogard for the admirable and efficient manner in which he
had performed the duties of W . M . during the past year in the absence of Bro . Alderman Savory , W . M ., in addition to the onerous work of Secretary . Bro . Hogard expressed his thanks for this mark of their appreciation . The circumstances had been exceptional , for they had not had the pleasure of seeing their W . M . during his year ot office . During the whole of his Masonic experience he had never
known a similar instance in any lodge with which he had been connected , nor had he heard of such an unusual occurrence . He had endeavoured to fill the vacancy to the best of his ability , and was amply repaid by their thanks . The W . M . proposed , and Bro . R . Baker seconded , a sincere and hearty vote of thanks to the Installing Master , Bro . Jas . Terry , P . G . S . B ., for the able and feeling manner in
which he had performed the installation ceremony . The proposition having been carried " nern . con ., " Bro . Terry returned thanks , and said he considered it his duty , whether a member of a lodge or otherwise , to render any assistance in his power . On the motion of the Secretary , Bro . VV . Wright , Org . 1 S 97 , was appointed Honorary Organist of the lodge . Several apologies for non-attendance having
been announced , the lodge was closed . After a recherche repast , the customary toast list was carried out in a hearty and cordial manner . ln giving " The Grand Officers , " the W . M . said their lodge had on similar occasions been very fortunate in the presence of Grand Officers , and that evening was no exception . It was a great pleasure to a W . M . to see so
many distinguished brethren present , and he appreciated the compliment paid him . Bro . J . L . Mather , P . A . G . D . C , returned thanks , and expressed the pleasure , which he was sure was shared by his brother G . Officets present , it at all times gave them to
respond to the toast . It was difficult to find new language in which to respond , and he was sure he should meet with approval if he left the response to Bro . Altman . Bro . Altman , G . Stwd ., said he had the honour to represent a very old lodge—the Peace and Harmony Lodge , No . Go . 'The duties of the G . Stewards were not very

onerous , but on the 24 th April they would be busy in providing for the comforts of the brethren , and his duty on that day was the pleasurable one of looking after the ladies . It was his belief that the G . Officers at all times did their best for the benefit of the lodges at large . Bro . C F . Hogard , P . G . S . B ., said it was unique in the history of a lodge to find the same brother rising three
years in succession to propose "Ihe Health of the W . Master . " He had fortunately an easy task to perform in proposing the health of Bro . Hastings Miller , who had fulfilled the office of W . M . on four occasions previous to his installation that night , and that he had performed those duties in a satisfactory manner had been proved in the various lodges over which he had presided , the Prov . G .
Master for Middlesex having rewarded him with the purple collar . It was an open secret that their W . M . hoped shortly to receive a purple collar elsewhere . As they were aware , Bro . Hastings Miller had for several years been a member of the Board of General Purposes —that Board which had the duty of looking after tha whole of the interests of the Craft under the banner of the
Grand Lodgeof England . Their W . M . had been honoured elsewhere , for they found him representing an important Ward in the City of London in the Common Council . They were , however , interested in him as being one of the founders of their lodge , and its present W . M ., and in his hands its honour and reputation would lose none of the lustre which , during the short time it had existed , he ( Bro .
Hogard ) believed it had attained . He could speak for a long time on this subject , but he was sure the brethren would desire him to propose the toast at once as there was an excellent programme of music to which they would prefer to listen . In their name , he congratulated Bro . Hastings Miller in attaining the highest position they could confer upon him , and during the ensuing year they would
have a W . M . who would fulfil the duties appertaining to his office with dignity , and with that " suaviter in modo " which was so essential in the occupant of the chair . They were also sure he would not be called upon to use his "fortitet in re . " He asked them to drink heartily and sincerely to the health of the VV . M ., wishing him long life and prosperity , and a successful year of office .
Bro . T . Hastings Miller , P . P . G . Org ., W . M ., said it was with feelings of gratitude that he rose to thank Bro . Hogard for the way in which he had introduced the toast to their notice , although that brother had said too much respecting him . That he had taken great interest in the Highbury Lodge he need hardly say , from the fact of being one of its founders . He regretted that during the past
year he had not been able to emulate the good qualities of the I . P . M ., in consequence of his absence . He looked back with pride and sorrow to the time when his late good friend , Bro . Edgar Bowyer , became the first W . M ., for that brother was his guiding star in Masonry , and they knew how well he discharged his duties in this and every lodge with which he was connected . He should endeavour
to emulate that good brother , and support the reputation of the Craft and their lodge , and if he received their thanks at the end of the year he would be more than repaid for his trouble . In response to the toast of "The Initiates , " Bio . Bell said he rose with all humility and deference in the presence of his elders to return thanks for the kind reception
accorded them . It would not be out of place for him to say what a Mason felt on being initiated . He had heard a good deal that night of the word "brother , " and it reminded him that Macaulay , in the " Lays of Ancient Rome , " remarks that the Romans were like brothers in the ancient days of Rome . Having entered Masonry that
night , he promised them he would try to be a good Mason , and that was saying a great deal , for Masonry should be the common religion of the world . He felt that a new era in his life had opened to him , which he hoped he should not disgrace , and trusted he should live many years to be with ihem .
The Installing Master" was next given by the W . M ., who said that not only himself , but he believed every member and visitor , was grateful to Bro . Jas . Terry for the admirable manner and feeling way in which he performed the ceremony of installation . He regarded it as a pleasure that Bro . Terry should express a wish to install him , and , as one of his oldest friends , he felt it to be a great
compliment . He asked the brethren to drink to Bro . Terry ' s good health , hoping he would live for many years to adorn Freemasonry and to be a member of their lodge . Bro . Jas . Terry , P . G . S . B ., S . W ., thanked the W . M . for having thought fit to make a special toast for the Installing Master , although he would have been content to have been included with "The Officers . " In the discharge of the
duties that day he felt more than ordinary interest . He had installed many Masters , but he felt he should like lo have the privilige of placing Bro . Hastings Miller in the chair , for they had been connected for a period of nearly a quarter of a century , and had learnt to respect each other . He had endeavoured that day to render the ceremony to the best of his ability , and as a ceremony should
be rendered—impressive , and was proud to have had the honour of Installing the VV . M . Bro . T . Beard , P . M ., 101 , replied for " The Visitors , " and returned thanks for the magnificent reception accorded them . _ This was his first visit , although he had received many invitations . He felt very pleased to be present , not only to see the present W . M . installed , but also on account
ot reminiscences which were of an interesting , but also of a painful character . It was his privilege to have known their first W . M . —the late Bro . Bowyer—many years before hv became W . M . of this lodge , and when he heard of his sudden death he was amazed . The late brother was a good Mason , whose loss would be felt . They would excuse his digressing to refer to such an excellent and illustrious Mason .
Bros . Thompson , Griffiths , and Terry , jun ., also replied . The Worshipful Master next gave " The Masonic Charities . " Charity was the foundation-stone of Masonry , and he never liked to see that toast omitted . He believed their lodge had not been backward in doing its best for the Charities . With reference to the Boys' School , his opinion was that the cloud over that Institution was but a slight and that when the of the
one , Report Committee of Inquiry was issued the school would shine with greater lustre than it had ever done before . Bro . Frederick Binckes , Secretary Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , in response , said he did not think that in that lodge anything in the shape of passionate appeal was necessary to stimulate the brethren to do what they could in support of this great and noble Institution . As the toast
