Bro . James Gunston Chillingworth , the senior partner in the firm of W . Chillingworth and Sons , wine merchants , 23 , Great Tower-street , E . G ., retiring from the business with which he has been connected 40 years , it will , in future , be carried on under the old name by Bro . James Giesman Chillingworth and Bro . Charles Saward who has been connected with the firm for many years .

Bro . Sir Thomas and Lad y Brassey were amongst those who attended the meet of the East Sussex Foxhounds last week at Bexhill . Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick , who completed his 54 th year on Saturday last , has gone to Ravensworth , Bournemouth , to reside for some months .

The Metropolitan Relief and Visiting Society , of which our revered Bro . the Earl of Shaftesbury is a V . P ., Is appealing for funds to carry on its work in the winter months . Bro . the Pro Grand Master and Bro . Sir Algernon Borthwick have just been elected members of the Empire Club , which enters upon the fourth yearof its existe nee .

time probably has left England on his projected foreign trip . Bro . Sir Francis and Lady Burdett and famil y left Ramsbury Manor , Wilts , shortly before Christmas , for Foremark , their seat in Derbyshire , where they will spend the winter season .

Bro . Alderman Sir Francis and Lady Truscott entertained the members of Dowgate Ward and their ladies at dinner at their residence , 5 , Park-crescent , Portland-place , on the 22 nd ult . Bro . P . L . Simmonds read a paper at the ordinary meeting of the Society of Arts on Wednesday last on the " Present and Prospective Sources of the Timber Supplies of Great Britain . "

Bro . J . H . Puleston , M . P ., and Mrs . Puleston , Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , P . G . J . W ., and Lady Monckton , Bro . R . and Mrs . Belt , were among the guests entertained at dinner on Christmas-day by Bro . the Lord Mayor .

G . Dalrymple , P . G . A . D . C . England , and Prov . G . Sec . Cumberland and Westmorland , was , by a unanimous vote , elected an honorary member . Bro . H . B . Marshall , G . Treasurer , has contributed £ 50 towards the Rowland Hill Benevolent Fund , among other contributors being the firms of Rothschilds

and Sons , Baring Bros ., Glyn , Mills , and Co ., the P . and O . Company , Barclay , Bevan and Co ., & c Sir J . Paget , Bart ., has given notice to move at the next meeting of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons that measures be taken to place in the College a memorial in honour of the late Bro . Sir Erasmus Wilson , P . G . D ., who has bequeathed to the College about £ 280 , 000 .

H . R . H . the Princess Beatrice has graciously consented to become President of No . 3 ( the St . James ' s and Hyde Park ) District of the St . John Ambulance Association , and the Queen has forwarded on Her Royal Highness's behalf a donation of £ 25 to the funds of the association .

R . W . Bro . Lord Leigh , P . G . M . Warwickshire , Lord Lieutenant of the County , presided over a meeting of the Committee for the restoration of St . Michael's Church , Coventry . In congratulating the Committee , the noble lord said that £ 40 , 000 would be required , leaving £ 10 , 000 still to be raised .

The Elliot Lodge , No . 1567—Bro . R . T . Fennell , P . M . ; W . M , —will give its first ball at Freemasons' Tavern , on the evening of Thursday next , the Sth inst . The services of Coote and Tinney ' s band have been secured , and Bro . T . Bird , P . M . 1 S 97 , P . P . G . S . B . Middx ., has taken upon himself the . onerous duties of Hon . Secretary .

On Saturday last a meeting of the tenantry on the County Down estates of the Marquis of Londonderry was held in Newtoivnards for the purpose of arranging for the presentation of an address of condolence to the Dowager Marchioness and the Marquis of Londonderry on the occasion of the death of the late Marquis , Prov . G . Master of Durham .

Bro . Sir S . H . Waterlow , Bart ., M . P ., who is President of the Institution , was among the guests at the dinner held at Freemasons' Tavern on Monday , in aid of the funds of the Commercial Travellers' Institution . There are now on the fund 212 annuitants—namely , 25 travellers receiving £ 50 a year each , and 1 S 7 widows receiving £ 30 a year each . The subscriptions amounted to £ 2169 . Bro . Tames Stevens has undertaken to deliver

his lecture , " Knobs and Excrescences , " in the Lodge of Peace and Harmony , No . 199 , at Dover , on Monday next , the 5 U 1 inst . The lodge will be opened at the Koyal Oak-Hotel , Dover , at 7 p . m . sharp , and brethren from the surrounding neighbourhoods are invited . Bro . Stevens delivered this lecture in the Royal Arthur Lodge of Instruction , at Wimbledon , on Thursday in this week . A report of the meeting will appear in our next impression .

The following resolution was most heartil y passed by the members of Bro . Hughan's Cornish lodge , in which he has served as Master in 1 SG 8 and 1 S 7 S : " That the brethren of Lodge Fortitude , No . 131 , viewed with much satisfaction the honour conferred on Bro . Hughan , P . M . 131 , by members of Grand Lodge and others , in the

handsome presentation to him of a purse containing £ 375 , and a writing table , & c . Also that the lodge wish to convey to him their congratulations on the world-wide reputation he has attained in Masonry , and feel highly honoured themselves by the distinction awarded to one of their number . "

THE WARWICKSHIRE BISCUIT COMPANY . — This company , which has been established for many years at Birmingham , and whose biscuits have deservedly secured for it a very considerable share of public patronage , has recently found itself under the necessity of extending its sphere of operations , and to this end has established a London depot at Mansion House Chambers , Queen Victoria-street , E . C . Here will be kept stores of the

different biscuits purveyed by the company , and here cakes and confectionery of all kinds will be made . Any further information that may be desired will be courteously furnished by the manager , Mr . Frank Richards , but it may be convenient to state , for the benefit of Masonic caterers and others , that not only is the quality of the goods sold by the Warwickshire Biscuit Company excellent , but the prices charged are most reasonable .

Sir Moses Montefiore has , we are glad to say , greatly improved in health , and has regained his strength to a very appreciable extent . Bro . F . A . Philbrick , Q . C ., G . Reg ., D . P . G . M . Essex , contributed a silver cup towards the array of prizes distributed last week to the Colchester Rifle Volunteers .

The annual dinner in connection with the Brixton Lodge of Instruction will take place on Tuesday , the 27 th inst ., at the Prince Regent , Dulwich-road , Herne-hill . The Chiswick Lodge of Instruction will meet on Saturday ( to-morrow ) at the Hampshire Hog , Hammersmith . Brethren are cordially invited , it being a musical evening .

Bro . Alderman Fowler , M . P ., G . J . W ., has joined the committee formed for the purpose of raising a memorial to the late Bishop P . C . Claughton , Archdeacon of London . Bro . Sir G . Goldney , Bart ., M . P ., presided on Tuesday at the Cannon-street Hotel at the first ordinary meeting of the shareholders of the Buenos Ayres and

Pacific Railway Company . We regret to have to record that Bro . Sir Frederick Milner , Bart ., M . P ., has had to undergo asevere operation , which has left him very weak , he is , however , progressing favourably . Our nei ghbour , Mr . E . Surrey , has . issued his usual handy little pocket diary and calendar for the newyear ,

with price list of the excellent cigars , tobaccos , and other goods he has on sale . Bro . G . A . Sala started on Saturday last on a lecturing tour in Australia . He will travel via San Francisco , and will give lectures en route in the different American cities he passes through . Bro . E . A . Francis , the Preceptor of the Brixton

Lodge of Instruction , will preside at the meeting on Tuesday , the Gth inst . After the lodge is closed the monthl y meeting of the Benevolent Fund will take place . Bro . Alderman Sir J . W . Ellis , Bart ., M . P ., and Sir H . W . Peek , Bart , M . P ., contributed liberally towards the free admission tickets issued for an entertainment given on Friday , the 26 th inst ., at the Drill Hall , Kingston .

The portraits of Bro . Lord Mayor Nottage , Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Whitehead , and Sheriff Phillips , which appeared in the City Press Almanack for 18 S 5 were from photographs taken by the London Stereoscopic Company . ¦ Bro . N . B . Headon has recently been elected , on the Common Council of the City of London , as a representative of the Ward of Farringdon Within . Bro .

Headon is known as a very active Mason , and a consistent supporter of our Institutions . An emergency meeting of the Lodge of King Solomon , No . 2029 , will be held on the 3 rd inst ., at Red Lion-square , when several brethren are to be passed and raised , and Bro . the Rev . C . T . Porter , D . D ., LL . D ., vicar of All Saints , Southport , and Bro . Ames , P . G . S ., J . W . 2 , are to be balloted for as joining members .

London , by patrimony , will be conferred , at an early date during the present year , on Prince Albert Victor , elder son of the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., who received the freedom in 1 S 63 , and whose father , the late Prince Consort , was similarly honoured in 1 S 40 , the year of his marriage with the Queen . Her Majesty has given her consent to the

betrothal of her youngest daughter , H . R . H . the Princess Beatrice , to Prince Henry of Battenberg , a younger brother of Prince Louis of Battenberg , married to the Queen's grand-daughter , Princess Victoria of Hesse , and Prince Alexander , who , in 1 S 79 , was elected Prince of Bulgaria . A curious relationship will result from this marriage , the Princess Beatrice becoming the sister-in-law of Prince Louis , who is already her nephew by marriage .

The Second North London Masonic Benevolent Ball will be held at the Holborn Town Hall , W . C ,, on Wednesday next , the 7 th inst . Bros . P . Forge and N . L . Western will officiate as M . C . ' s , while among the Stewards will be found Bros . H . Sprake , J . Baker , VV . G . Akehurst , H . B . Harding , J . Moulton , J . ' Potter , S . Stretch , G . F . Snook , R . Baker , G . Batten , and G . Dearing . The

musical arrangements will be under the direction of Bro . Collings , Org . 1693 . Bros . C . Hammond , of Nos . S 20 and 1471 , and E . Woodman , S . W . No . 1950 , will act as Treasurer and Hon . Secretary , it being intended that the profits accruing shall be handed over to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys . Bro . Banister Fletcher , who was elected on St .

Thomas ' s Day as a member of the Court of Common Council for Farringdon Within , is a member of our Fraternity , and belongs to the Burlington Lodge , which meets at the Albion . Bro . Fletcher is also junior Major in the Tower Hamlets Rifle Brigade , which contains amongst its officers several Craftsmen . The senior Major , Bro . Wilde , is a member of the Alliance Lodge , 1 S 27 , as are also Lieut .

Dunfee and Lieut . Henry Wright , who is J . VV . in the Alliance and a member of the Lodge of King Solomon , 2060 , and of the Bayard Royal Arch and Rose Croix Chapters . Another of the captains has recently been initiated in the person of Capt . Baptie , late Liberal candidate for Maidstone , in also Lodge 2060 , whilst Surgeon Piatt is a member of the Canterbury Lodge .

On Saturday last a meeting of the tenantry on the County Down estates of the Marquis of Londonderry was held in Newtoivnards for the purpose of arranging for the presentation of an address of condolence to the Dowager Marchioness and the Marquis of Londonderry on the occasion of the death of the late Marquis , Prov . G . Master of Durham .

Bro . Sir S . H . Waterlow , Bart ., M . P ., who is President of the Institution , was among the guests at the dinner held at Freemasons' Tavern on Monday , in aid of the funds of the Commercial Travellers' Institution . There are now on the fund 212 annuitants—namely , 25 travellers receiving £ 50 a year each , and 1 S 7 widows receiving £ 30 a year each . The subscriptions amounted to £ 2169 . Bro . Tames Stevens has undertaken to deliver

his lecture , " Knobs and Excrescences , " in the Lodge of Peace and Harmony , No . 199 , at Dover , on Monday next , the 5 U 1 inst . The lodge will be opened at the Koyal Oak-Hotel , Dover , at 7 p . m . sharp , and brethren from the surrounding neighbourhoods are invited . Bro . Stevens delivered this lecture in the Royal Arthur Lodge of Instruction , at Wimbledon , on Thursday in this week . A report of the meeting will appear in our next impression .

The following resolution was most heartil y passed by the members of Bro . Hughan's Cornish lodge , in which he has served as Master in 1 SG 8 and 1 S 7 S : " That the brethren of Lodge Fortitude , No . 131 , viewed with much satisfaction the honour conferred on Bro . THE WARWICKSHIRE BISCUIT COMPANY . — This company , which has been established for many years at Birmingham , and whose biscuits have deservedly secured for it a very considerable share of public patronage , has recently found itself under the necessity of extending its sphere of operations , and to this end has established a London depot at Mansion House Chambers , Queen Victoria-street , E . C . Here will be kept stores of the

different biscuits purveyed by the company , and here cakes and confectionery of all kinds will be made . Any further information that may be desired will be courteously furnished by the manager , Mr . Frank Richards , but it may be convenient to state , for the benefit of Masonic caterers and others , that not only is the quality of the goods sold by the Warwickshire Biscuit Company excellent , but the prices charged are most reasonable .

H . the Princess Beatrice , to Prince Henry of Battenberg , a younger brother of Prince Louis of Battenberg , married to the Queen's grand-daughter , Princess Victoria of Hesse , and Prince Alexander , who , in 1 S 79 , was elected Prince of Bulgaria . A curious relationship will result from this marriage , the Princess Beatrice becoming the sister-in-law of Prince Louis , who is already her nephew by marriage .
