THE MASONIC CALENDARS FOR 1889 . \\ e have not had sufficient time lately to do more than acknowledge the receipt of the following " handy-books " of information in respect of the organization of sundry Provincial Grand Lodges , and even now cannot do more than briefly review them .

' Jhe Dei-set 3 fason ! c Calendar , A . L . 5 SS 9 , A . D . 1 SS 0—Compiled by John A . Sherren , P . P . G . Pt ., P . M . and Tr . 170 and Prov . Scribe E .. under authority of the P . G . M . ( Weymouth : Sherren and Son , 79 , ht . Mary Street ) , claims our first attention as being without doubt most exhaustive in respect of every " part , point and letter " of masonic information relating to the lod and

ges , chapters preceptories in . Dorsetshire . Its lists of grand officers , past and present , or officers of private lodges , and even of members of the latter , are voluminous , and cannot fail to be of interest to every Freemason in the province . We do not hesitate to express our opinion that this is one of—if not the best of—the masonic calendars we have yet seen

A 3 fasonie Calendar for the Province of J / ertfordshi . rc , 1889—^ jited by W . Bro . George E . Lake . Provincial Grand Secretary . I ' -Menlea , Watford . Much of what we have above written might be repeated here in respect of this calendar . It is not so voluminous ; 'tit it is , nevertheless , ably compiled , and will afford readily all usuall y required information to the brethren interested in the masonic work of the province .

C . Compton , f leet Street , Bury . This useful little calendar would be greatly improved by the addition of the dates of the installation meetings or the numerous lodges and chapters within the province . In other ™ ' $ ? support , as either life governors or life subscribers , the several charitable institutions are " very pretty reading , " and uphold the credit of the province for masonic charity . A couple of pages more of the same description in the next edition is really the only suggestion we can make for the improvement of this calendar .

The Lancaster 3 Tasonie Calendar for 1889 ( Lancaster : II . Longman , Printer , Market Street ) , is a waistcoat pocket edition , containing dates of meetings and list of officers of the various lodges , chapters , conclaves , & c , & c , held in the town . Its purpose is for the use of townsmen merely , and not for provincial information . To the former it should be found a good help to memory , and preclude excuses for non-attendance at masonic meetings in Lancaster .

FROM THE SKY . —Whence came Geometry or Masonry ? We answer , from the canopy of the heavens . Our ancient brethren were wise observers of the sun , moon , planets and stars , and from their movements and changes deducted all the important figures and principles of Geometry or Masonry , and of architecture . Had we not seen the movements and changes which produce the figures

and suggest the principles named , we might have doubts on the subject . A discerning eye and years of observation will discover in the sky every geometrical figure used in Freemasonry and Knighthood , not excepting Jacob ' s Ladder , the Ark , the Arch , the apron , the Passion cross , the Maltese cross , and the cross of St . Andrew . The triangle constantly exists , and constantly is produced . Job saw all this and hinted it strongly . Look and think wisely brethren ) ere you discard this suggestion .
