AVhen I saw Faust up to Date for the first time some few weeks ago , the burlesque , good as it was , needed amendment in certain places . Since then certain excellent alterations and improvements have been effected , and these serve to render the latest travesty of Goethe ' s immortal work one of the brightest I have ever seen on the subject . Messrs . Sims and Pettitt have , in their book , displayed
more than abundant humour , and they have provided amply for the display of the special talents of the company engaged in the representation . The music , by Maestro Meyer Lutz , is graceful , taking , and far more clever than is that of many a comic opera . The good old story of Faust and Marguerite is treated by the authors in a very ingenious manner in order to bring it "up to date" in more
ways than the title merely suggests . It is scarcely necessary , now , to detail the points of the plot ; suffice it , that the hero and heroine escape the fate of the original personages by having been married by special license , by which ruse Mephistopheles is deprived of his victims , and all ends happily . Miss Florence St . John is the Marguerite ; though not seen at her best as an actress in this
production , her singing is of the greatest value . She now introduces a pretty new ballad in the second act , "For You , " which gained a very decided encore ; but , for my part , I much prefer the ballad of ' ¦ The Dawn of LoA e , " words , music and rendition being alike excellent . Miss Fanny Robina as Faust , acts , sings < and dances with vivacity , sprightliness . grace and " go . " She has much improved
during her absence in Australia , and , while I give th-s clever little laoy all possible credit for the excellence of her performance , I cannot help wondering why the authors did not break through the conventionality of burlesque , and , instead of having a girl to play the hero , engage a male for the part . If one only considers Avha ' t the Mephisto of Lonnen would be like if backed up by a Faust by ,
say , Frank AVyatt or Tom Squire , a vision of fun is aroused Avhich even those laudatores temporis act ' t , who praise nothing modern , would be compelled to admire . Of Lonnen ' s Mephisto , nothing by Avay of description can be given ; from the time that he descends upon the stage a . la Baldwin in a parachute , until the final fall of the curtain , this clever artist is constantly
providing fresh fun . He never flags , and he is eminently successful throughout . Mr . George Stone is delightfully humorous as Valentine . This is one of the features of the piece ; the part is so well acted , from a burlesque point of view , that it cannot fail to commend itself to all Avho love a hearty laugh . Mr . Harry Parker is only fairly good as the Lord Chancellor . Miss Maria Jones , as
Martha , is as good a thing in its line as has been seen for years . A clever quartette of ladies , namely , the Misses Lilian Price , Florence Levey , Maude AVilmot , and Eva Greville , create quite a furore by their clever dancing , while their vocalisation is agreeable ; the Gossips' Quartette at the beginning of act tv ? o Avas very nicely
rendered . Several other clever and attractive young ladies , headed by Miss Jenny McNulty , deserve special mention did space allow . The piece , as is usual under Mr . Edwardes' management , is elaborately staged , and the groupings and dances reflect great credit upon Mr . Charles Harris , the stage manager , and John D'Auban . the ballet
master . The Lyceum re-opens on the 22 nd inst . Avith Macbeth . Irving ' s first essay with this part at the same theatre Avas not a success . I Avonder Avhat will be the verdict upon the present A'enture . Miss Terry ' s Lady Macbeth will be looked forward to with the greatest possible interest . So Avill the new patent moon .
Sims and Pettitt ' s new drama for the Adelphi Theatre is to be called Break o' Day ( no connection Avith Peep o' Day ) , and will lie produced on the 21 st inst . Friday I Absit omen ! JYadgy , at the Avenue Theatre , is drawing crowded houses , mainly through the popularity of Mr . Arthur Roberts , as Professor Pharagas , and Madlle . Vanoni in the title role . I am sorry that I
cannot congratulate either the author or the composer on their work . The " book " is , to my mind , utterly feeble , and the music is only moderately attractive . Everything has been done in every possible Avay to make the production a success , and in this connection Mons . Marius , whom I have always regarded as one of the best stage managers we have , and Mr . AVatkin , are to be highly
complimented . Mr . John Crook conducts a more than efficient orchestra , and the chorus is good enough , the female element thereof being costumed most tastefully , added to Avhich the natural charms of these lovely young ladies are by no means hidden . Mr . Joseph Tapley sings agreeably , and Mr . Alec Marsh , who possesses a splendid voice Avhich he manages with taste and skill , made me regret that I did not hear more of his singing . Of hia speaking I
cannot say much , for he delivers his lines in anything but a satisfying manner . Mr . J . J . Dallas is really most amusing . I was prepared to like Miss Guilia AVarwick very much , and she did not disappoint me . Miss Sallie Turner was good as the duenna . Of Madlle . Vanoni and Mr . Arthur Roberts nothing can be said which is too complimentary . They each acted with the greatest amount of abandon and " go , " and were the life and soul of the opera , Avhichwithout themAvould scarcel

The statements that some large amounts of gold are on their way to this country had given rise to a more confident feeling as regards the future , or rather , I ought to say , has to some extent relieved the depression existing , but I am by no means sure that this is much to be depended upon as likely to improA r e prices for the present . At the
fortnightly settlement , commenced yesterday , it was found that the amount of the speculative account open had been very much reduced , so that the contango rates , although heavier than on the last occasion , Avere not so onerous as was expected , and no difficulty Avas experienced in carrying forward bargains to the new account . There is , however , very little business of any kind doing , nor do
I think there will be much more until after the holidays . There is a slight recovery from the lowest prices touched during the last few days , but it is not well maintained , . and , when we calculate the added contangoes , prices are in many cases actually lower than before . Since I wrote last Aveek there has been little else but depression , in some cases very marked . In New York there is as yet
no indication to put prices up , and it looks as if the dealers there were determined that a lower level must be reached before they will make any attempt to improve matters . As a rule it will be found that the last prices of the y ear are dull , and 1888 gives every indication of keeping up the record . Perhaps the most doubtful stock is Milwaukee , which one day vrere as low as 00 , and w ill probably be
the same again or even lower . There is the most business done just noAV in Union Pacific , and the tendency here is better . If there were any bargains doing in the English railway market , I should expect to see higher prices ; as it is there is a quick recovery after every fall . The traffic returns keep up well , and in the case of the heavy lines Avarrant the expectation of increased dividends .
Midlands , North Eastern , and Great AVestern Avill no doubt be bought for next year , as soon as there is any clearing up of the monetary horizon . And speaking of these particular lines , there is not much stock floating , so that a very moderate demand will have a sharp effect on prices . In the Foreign Market the feeling is better . In Paris great
efforts are being made to prevent any actual collapse in the Panama scheme , and , this danger averted , there will not be much reason to fear that stocks will be recklessly thrown away . The New Russian Loan has fallen very flat in London , and is not even mentioned . AATiat the success has been I do not know , bey r ond the fact that there is no dealing in the new scrip . The demand for Peruvian
Stocks is renewed , and although the smart little rise is not Avell maintained , I should rather be a buyer than a seller . Egypts are stronger , and of these I consider that Dairas will give the best profit to a buyer . The advance in the gold premium in Buenos Ayres is depressing Cedulas , which look very weak again . The increase of £ 1 , 700 in the Mexican railway weekly traffic did
not improve the price of the stock , comparing as it does against a IOAV take last year ; up to date the gross increase is £ 7 , 800 for the current half-year , leaving three weeks to add , which are usually dull ones as regards business . Trunks do not show much strength and are loAver than they were a week ago and give but a very poor chance to the bulls . An attempt ; is being made by some of the
shareholders to induce the directors of this and the Canadian Pacific Companies to come to some terms which will . avoid the disastrous competition , but it is evident that the dealers do not put much reliance upon any such Avell-meaning endeavours ; where there is only traffic for one both cannot gain by an equal division . Nitrate rails go up and down with a pretty frequent
regularity and Avill probably vary from 27 to ' 61 , and may be bought at the one price or sold at the other with tolerable certainty of a profit . The shares of the Nitrate Companies are better . The meeting of the Taltal Company ' s shareholders is calculated to inspire them with confidence in their property , assurance being given that the returns are likely to be better than
promised . Of the miscellaneous companies , beyond a few dealings in these different nitrates , there is almost utter absence of bargains ; nor do I for the moment see where the next movement will be . African gold mines continue to absorb the attention of the dealers , and as but little is known of the concerns prices will
doubtless be carried higher ; whether they will be maintained or not is extremely doubtful .
