The toast of "The Provincial Grand Lodge" was next given by the Chairman , who congratulated the province upon having a governing body full of life and energy , and in the active exercise of all its functions . The Prov . G . Lodge of Glasgow , he went on to say , hacl a foundation of practical working officebearers , with a body of earnest , zealous Masons to complete the superstructure . There were in that superstructure many stones of more than average qualit and none more so than its

y , " chiefest corner stone , " the Prov . G . M ., "Walter Montgomery Neilson . In Bro . Neilson they had not only a man of worth , but a man of modest worth—a rara avis in these days—ami it would not be forgotten that , while quite ready and willing to take upon himself the duties and responsibities of his present office , Bro . Neilson was at the same time content to remain in a subordinate position , if thereby he could have served the province

better . He had no doubt that under Bro . Neilson ' s reign such schemes as the Masonic Hall Company and tho educational scheme , which appeared to have been allowed to slumber lately , would receive earnest and early attention from tbe Pi'ov . G . Lodge—these being measures of practical utility , affecting not only the interests , but also the credit of the Craft . Aud let this not be forgotten , that , while we look to the Prov . G . Loclge for wisdom to devisewo should be prepared to lend our whole

Immediately previous to tho last toast , Bro . J . D . Porteous took occasion to present Bro . AVallace , as a mark of his gratitude for Masonic services rendered , a pair of gold spectacles suitably inscribed . This act being quite unexpected by Bro . Wallace , as well as tbe rest of the company , created quite a pleasant " sensation , " and formed not the least agreeable feature of the evening's entertainment . Bro . AVallace returned thanks in a feeling speech .

Tbe various toasts wore illustrated with suitable music by the director of music , Bro . M . J . Agnew , who also accompanied tho various songs which were sung throughout the evening . GLASGOW—Lodge of Glasgow St . John ( No . 3 lis ) . —The monthly meeting of this lodge was held on the 7 th inst ., Bro . Baird , R . AV . M ., in the chair . Bros . M-Millan , S . AV . ; M'Aulay ,

J . AV . ; and a considerable number of brethren 2 'i'esent . The minutes were read and passed . Five candidates were initiated . The nomination of office-bearers for ensuing year also took place , Bro . Bail d being re-elected R . AV . M . In reference to the coming festival of the loclge , Bro . Buchan observed that it might be judicious for the committee to consider the advisability of discontinuing the further propagation of tbe idea contained in the title " 812 th Anniversary" seeing said idea was in reality

, groundless . Bro . Baird , in reply , stated that " 812 th Anniversary" would be put upon the festival tickets in conformity with past usage , until it was proved to be wrong . The reply was satisfactory to the majority of the brethren . The loclge was thereafter called from labour to refreshment / and in process of time duly closed .

GLASGOW . —Shamrock and Thistle Lodge ( No . 275 ) . —The annual general meeting for the election and installation of officebearers for tbe ensuing year was held in the lodge room , Bridgeton , on the 3 rd inst ., the R . AV . M ., Bro . AVilliam Phillips , occupying the chair . The lodge was opened in the first degree , when the following brethren were elected : —Bros . AVilliam Phillips , R . AV . Arkle ' s Hotel , for the purpose of installing D . Prov . G . Master Bro . AV . M . Gilmour , ancl Substitute Prov . G . Master Bro . J . Clark Forrest , into their respective offices . In the absence of

the Provincial Grand Master—Bro . James Merry , M . P . —Bro . W . M . Gilmour presided ; Bro . John M'Ghie acting as S . W ., and Bro . John Wilson as J . AV . There were fully one hundred brethren present , and amongst those were Bro . Hector F . M'Lean ,. the Provincial Grand Master of the Upper AVard of Lanarkshire , ancl his office-bearers . Bros . Grand Loclge having been opened with solemnity in the first degree , the efficient secretary read the commissions in favour of Bros . Gilmour and Forest , when thereafter the ceremony of installation was most ably performed by Bro . Hector P . M'Lean . Bro . Gilmour , in name of himself ancl his substitute , thanked the brethren in an eloquent speech for their attendance , awl assured them that there would be nothing wanting on their parts to advance the interests of the Craft . Business being concluded , the loclge was called to refreshment .

HAMILTON . —Hamilton Lodge ( No . 233 ) . —This loclge met on Tuesday , the 30 th ult ., for the election of office-bearers , and to celebrate the festival of St . Andrew . The foUowing were elected office-bearers for the ensuing year , and installed into office by Bro .
