been half full ancl overflowing during the Christain period , ancl that for some purpose or other the water was carried away by an aqueduct to the Kedron Valley . At the present day , Avhen there is such a dearth of running water in Jerusalem , it

is rather mystifying to find that within our era the Birket Israil has probably been constantly full up to a certain point , ancl flowing over . It Avill be a great mistake now if we have to stop this Avork for Avant of funds . We have got over

to this N . E . angle Avith considerable trouble and at great risk , and it is hi g hly probable that difficulties would be put in the waj r of a second excavation at this point . If the excavations are to continue , I am

convinced ib is essential that we seould strain ev ery nerve to get sufficient funds to complete this work .

EXTRACTS FROM THE MINUTE-BOOK OF THE ROYAL VETERANS ENCAMPMENT OF KNIGHTS TEMPLAR .

( Continued from page 287 . ) On the loth of April , 1808 , Bro . Thos . Lacey , a Royal Arch Mason , was dubbed a Knight Templar of Saint John of Jerusalem and a Knight of Malta , and the sum of one pound and fivepenee halfpenny Avas

paid for repairing tbe Ark , October 16 , 1808 . Sir Knights John Pergusson and John Ellis were exalted to the Eed Cross degree , and paid half a guinea each for the same .

March 11 , 1811 . —Bro . Peter Horall , of Boston , Massachusets , in America , a Royal Arch Mason , was regularly dubbed a Kni ght Templar aud Knight of Malta and Knight of tbe Eed Cross . "August 31 , 1816 . —Sir Knight Pogelstrom craved admittance . He being requested to Avait for tbe

decision of the Sir Kni ghts present on account of his being excluded from the lower Orders before bis receiving an answer , be departed , but it Avas agreed to hy tbe Sir Knights be should not be admitted agaiu . " December 23 , 1817 . —Sir Knt . •¦ having been censured by a committee for having initiated persons into the lower Orders in a clandestine manner , it was unanimously resolved that he be debarred from all the privileges of this honourable Order . "

These few extracts throw a little li ght on the Avorking and discipline of tho Order as it existed 50 years ago , and further that at that period tbe Kni ght Templar , the Knight of Malta , and the Knight of the Eed Cross were given asj separate degrees under tbe Avarrant of the Grand Conclave of England . I have bad the good fortune to converse Avith a Sir

Knight who Avas dubbed on the Slut of August , 1816 ; he has a lively recollection of the Masonic workings of the period . His description of the Eed Cross degree enables me to connect it in substance with tbe Eed Cross of Constantine as now given in London .

Extracts From The Minute-Book Of The Royal Veterans Encampment Of Knights Templar.

This induces me to ask , through the medium of your valuable publication : — 1 . Did the Grand Conclave ever cede their authority over the Red Cross degree ? 2 . If so , when and to Avhat governing body ? 3 . If they did not , by Avhat authority is the Eed Cross of Constantine at present Avrought ?
