DU-M-DUM . —Lodge St . LuJce , ( No . 1150 ) . —The old Dum-Dmn Lodge , Couav . ge with Humanity ( No . 551 ) , established 1821 , was remoA-ed to Calcutta about eighteen years ago , owing to a decrease in the number of members , which rendered it inexpedient to its continuing to ivork at Dum-Dum . From that time to the establishment of the present lodge , St . Luke , there Avas no lodge at Dum-Dum . Iu 1860 , certain brethren , then resident in this station , thought it advisible to establish a

neiv lodge , and applied to R . W . Bro . J . J . L . Hoff . Officiating Provincial Grand Master of Bengal , for permission to do so , soliciting that a dispensation might be grantd to enable them to commence working , pending the arrival of a AVarrant of Constitution from the Grand Lodge of England . Owing to the departure of some of the office bearers , unfornately too common an occurrence in lodges ivhich' number many military men amonst their members , some of the offices have changed hands during the year . On the 25 th March Bro . Lawrell AA-IIS appointed J . D ., and Bro . Forbes , I . G . ; on the the 26 th June Bro . Forbes AVIIS elected Treasurer , ancl Bro . Winn was appointed I . G . ; and on the 9 th September Bro . Fenwick was appointed S . AV and Bro . AV . AV . Clark , J . AV .

On the 15 th June 1861 the AA ' arrant from the Grand Lodge of England Avas brought forward hi open lodge ; and on the Srd July the brethren assembled for the purpose of consecrating the lodge . The lodge haA'e assembled , received the Officers of the Grand Lodge , and the AA ' . M . offered the Hiram to the R . AV . Oftg . Prov . G . M ., who returned it . The AV . M . opened the lodge , aud subsequently raised it to the 2 nd and Srd degrees .

The Offg . Prov . G . M . then took the Eastern chair , the warradt of constitution ivasread , and the Lodge ivas consecrated in due and ancient form , with solemn prayer ; the Ofl ' g . Prov . G . M . observing that , during his long career as a Mason , he had never ei'en witnessed the ceremony he now called on to perform . The lodge was then reduced to the 1 st degree , and there being no further business before the lodgeit Avas closed in and

, peace harmony ; the brethren , accompanied by their guests , adjourning to a banquet wnich had been provided by the Members of the lodge . ST . JOHN ' S LODGE ( NO . 715 . )—At a meeting of this lod <* e held on the 14 th February , Bro . Capt . J . . 1 . Browne , of Lod ^ e La Triple Esperance , at Port Louis , Mauritius , was elected a joining member . Mr . AA m . Robert Burkett , of the Bengal Civil Seivice , ivas initiated , and Bro . Brooks , of Lod ge St . Luke , who had been passed to the 2 nd degree at Dum-Dum by Bro . John AV . Brown , ivas raised to the 3 rd degree b y the

same brother . At an Emergent Meeting held on the folloivinoday , at 4 P .. I ., Bro . Capt . Foivler , of xhe China steamer Thunder , was passed to the 2 nd degree . He had been initiated in Lodgo St . John about tAvo years ago , and might have sought for advancement in China or at Singapore ; but he preferred waiting till he could have an opportunity of getting it in his mother lodge . The lodge has received a A'cry kind letter from General Boilean , Prov . Grand Master , dated Camp LiiHufcpore ,

the 16 th February , in reply to one addressed to him by the lodge , acknoAvledging receipt of his circular , and announcing his appointment to the Masonic charge of the province . At a meeting of the lodge held on the 14 th March , Mr . Arthur Howard Emerson , of the Hurkaru Press , was initiated by Bro . John Wm . Brown , P . M .. There was a very good attendance of brethren , among them Avere the Masters jaf Humility ivith Fortitude and Courage with Humanity , and some of the members of St . Luke and other lodges . Relief was given from

the poor-box to an applicant . Several left tho hall after dinner , for the purpose of being present at the reception at Government House ; but they returned to join in the song and harmony of the evening . LODGE HUMILITY AVITU FORTITUDE ( NO . 279 ) . —This lodge met on the 17 th February . Several visitors ivere present , and when their health ivas proposed , Bro . Dr . Sanger , in returning thanks , referred to bis connection with the lodge some eighteen

years before . He had just returned to Calcutta after a long absence , and he felt gratified at finding that the lodge still gave as hearty a welcome to brethren visiting it as it did in bygone days . The lodge met again on the 3 rd March , and initiated Mr . C . J . Macniillan , of Berhampore , anil Mr . H . T . Bristow In returning thanks for the health of the visitors , Bro . Hugh McLardy , of the Hoivrah Lodge , stated that he had not been in the habit of visiting lodges , but that the hearty Avelcome

ivhich he and the other visitors had received that evening in Humility with Fortitude , mado him feel disposed to have a greater experience of the hospitality of tho Calcutta lodges . Whether invited or not , he ivould , as a member of the Fraternity , come to the lodge , as a matter of right , whenever it Avas in his power to do so . He ivould rather see a lodge shoiA'ing an anxiety to prevent the visitors from leaving the hall before supper , than an anxiety to scrutinize their right to occupy a seat at the table .

The Centennial celebration of St , John ' s Lodge ( No . 4 ) , held at Hartford , on March 21 st , 1862—passed off finely , and Ave maysay was a decided success . The unfavourable state of the weather prevented the attendance of largo numbers of brethren from abroad , who ivere expected , and for whom accommodation had been made and ample arranginents completed . Notivithstauding the disappointment in this respect , it was an occasion long to be remembered , and an inrportant event in the history

of St . John's Lodge , and of masonry in this State . Agreeably to arranginents , the brethren assembled at Masonic Hall , 130 Main-street , and at 10 o ' clock a procession was formed . Precisely at half-past ten the procession commenced to move ii |) Main-street , and extended from the Hall to the State House . It made a fine and imposing appearance , and attracted marked attention . Giving to the disagreeableness of the Aveatherraining quite hard—the procession moved directly into Asylum

street to Allyn Hall . The gallery of this spacious and elegant Hall ivas reserved for the ladies , ivho in spite of the watery - element , ivere out in large numbers . The body of the hall ivas occupied by the various Lodges , Chapters , Councils , and Commanderies ; Avhile the Grand Officers of the State . and _ distinguished hrethren from abroad , occupied the stage , ivith the Chaplain , Orator , Germania Band , Beethoven Society , and others who took part in the exercises .
