The Freemasons' Magazine And The Craft.

THE FREEMASONS' MAGAZINE AND THE CRAET .

It is always with considerable reluctance that we say anything about ourselves , and nothing is further from our wish than to parade our position or our usefulness before the Brethren . ¥ e endeavour to do our duty honestly and fairly to the Craft , and we expect in return to receive their confidence and support . That we

do enjoy that confidence to a considerable extent , we think there can be no denying , as it is evidenced by the complimentary manner in which our labours are spoken of at the various Lodges ; but that we have not received that amount of solid support which we had a right to anticipate , is equally true . A circulation of less than from 3 , 000 to 4 , 000 cannot pay for a publication of the extent and

character of the Freemasons' Magazine , and that—though our circulation during the last few months has been regularly and steadily increasing—we freely acknowledge , we do not possess . For our own time and labour w e care but little ; but we do think that the Brethren , for whose benefit and information the Magazine is published , should support us in a manner which would prevent the necessity of

our monthly dipping our hands into our pockets to meet an excess of outlay over receipts . These observations have been called from us . by a resolution which has been come to by the Belvidere Lodge of Maidstone ( at the instance of the W . M ., our esteemed friend , Brother Cooke ) , to give us increased support . Our worthy Brother , however , has gone a little further in his resolution than even we are

disposed to go . The resolution , says the Magazine , " is not supported in a manner worthy of the Craft , and that it is in danger thereby of being discontinued . " In the first part of the sentence we fully concur ; but as regards the second , we can assure our friends , even with a monthly loss staring us in the face , there is no danger the Freemasons ' Magazine being discontinued . We have set ourselves a task which we

are pledged to carry out , and there is no exertion , no determination , no sacrifice of our pecuniary means—which we are not prepared to make to secure to the Craft a first-class organ of communication , and to keep them fully acquainted with everything of interest that takes place throughout the world , wherever Freemasonry is known . Having made these few observations , we tender our most sincere thanks to Brother Cooke , and the Brethren of the Belvidere Lodge ,

for their kind wishes , and the number of subscribers whose names have been forwarded to us , annexed to the resolution . If they could only induce every other Lodge in the kingdom to follow their example to only one-fifth the extent ,- — -and surely every Master , Secretary , and Warden of a Lodge ought to possess the Magazine , —our publication would be placed in a position beyond all * Vide p . 718 , of this number .
