On the 25 th , the second reading of the Local Dues on Shipping Bill was brought f orward , and adjourned until the next day , when it was withdrawn , that the subject might be referred to a Select Committee .
ACCIDENTS AND OFFENCES . On the 3 rd a French polisher , out of regular employ , of the name of Bousfield , residing in Portland-street , St . James ' s , murdered his wife and three children by cutting their throats . Her Majesty ' s ship Polyphemus was lost on the 29 th January , off the northwest coast of Jutland , when the master and fourteen hands were lost . The ship Josephine Willis was run down in the Channel on the night of the 3 rd by the steamer Mangerton and from sixty to seventy persons lost .
On the 6 th Thomas Corrigan was found guilty , at the Central Criminal Court , of the murder of his wife in the Minories on the 26 th December , and sentenced to death . The sentence has since been commuted to imprisonment for life . On the 7 th Charles Westron was convicted of the murder of Mr . Waugh , by shooting him in Bedford-row , on the 16 th January , but recommended to mercy on account of predisposition to insanity .
Thomas Jones , a convict , murdered Mr . Hope , assistant-surgeon of the Stirling Castle convict ship , in Portsmouth harbour , on the 8 th , because that gentleman had ordered him to be removed from one deck to another , by which his liberty was somewhat abridged . The Pavilion Theatre , in the Whiteehapel-road , was totally destroyed by fire on the 13 th . The loss is estimated at £ 20 , 000 . Celestine Somner , the wife of an engraver , murdered her illegitimate daughter , aged ten , at her residence in Linton-street , Islington , on the 16 th . The child did not usually live with her mother .

Id . The losses on the year were very severe , amounting to £ 7 , 399 . Ss . Id . The report way adopted , and a dividend at the rate of 5 per cent , declared .
