Edinburgh , St . Jai & aes , representatives were present from the following Lodges , viz .: —Fortrose , Renfrew county , Kilwinning , Biggar Free Operatives , and St . James , Tarbolton , the Lodge presided over by Burns , and to which he addressed his touching " farewell . " The hall of the Lodge , which has been recently renovated , attracted considerable attention from its chaste and classic embellishments and its striking combination of the chief astronomical and geometrical symbols of the Order . Two candidates were initiated into the Apprentice Degree , and the evening was spent in an exceedingly happy and harmonious manner .

Lodge of Edinburgh ( Mary ' s Chapel—No . 1 ) . —The annual meeting of this Lodge for the election of Office-Bearers , was held in the Lodge-room ( Ship Hotel ) , on Saturday , 27 th of December , when the R . W . M . Brother Dr . M'Cowan was reelected . Thereafter , the Brethren celebrated the festival of St . John the Evangelist , and received deputations from the various Lodges in Edinburgh and Leith , and from the Dalkeith Kilwinning . The meeting was most harmonious and happy . About 70 Brethren were present .

Lodge Edinburgh Defensive Band ( No . 151 ) . —This Lodge held its meeting for the election of Officers in the Anchor Hall , 221 , High-street , on the evening of Dec . 29 th , when Bro . James Finlayson was unanimously re-elected R . W . M . The rest of the offices having been filled up by the Brethren , the Lodge proceeded to celebrate the Festival of St . John , when -deputations from ten of the sister Lodges honoured them with their presence , congratulating the Lodge on the re-election of such a worthy and esteemed Mason as Bro . James Finlayson . During the evening the R . W . M ., in the name of the Lodge , spoke with true

Masonic feeling of the many valuable services rendered to the Lodge by P . M . Bro . James Ker , he having been elected at five different periods to the office of R . W . M ., besides filling various other offices in the Lodge , all which he filled not only with credit to himself , but with the esteem and respect of the Brethren ; and concluded a lengthened speech by presenting Bro . James Ker with a splendid jewel , emblematical of Faith , Hope , and Charity ; the reverse being a medal bearing the following inscription : — " Presented to Brother James Ker by the Brethren of the Masonic Lodge , Edinburgh Defensive Band , No . 151 , as a token of their respect and esteem for him . December 29 , 1856 . "

Celtic Lodge ( No . 291 ) . —This Lodge met in their Lodge-room , Turf Hotel , on the 29 th Dec , for the installation of Office-bearers for the ensuing year , and to celebrate the Festival of St . John the Evangelist . Before the installation , two candidates , one a commercial gentleman from Birmingham , the other a gentleman of the 5 th Dragoon Guards , were initiated in the 1 st Degree . Brother Jeffrey , of Lodge Dunbar Castle , was , on the motion of Bro . Murray , affiliated a member of

the Celtic Lodge . The offices of the Lodge being then declared vacant , Bro . Alexander Hay was installed with due ceremonies into the chair as R . W . M ., and received the mystical emblems of his office ; J . Gildawie , S . W . ; W . S . Brown , J . W . After the ceremonies had been concluded , between thirty and forty of the Brethren sat down to an excellent dinner . After a very pleasant evening , the harmony of which was much promoted by Bro . Watson on the harmonium and Bro . F . Bridginan on the concertina , the Lodge was closed in due form .

GLASGOW . PROVINCIAL aRAND LODGE . The festival of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Glasgow took place on the 23 rd of January , in the Trades Hall , under most favourable auspices . Brother Sir Archibald Alison , P . G . M ., presided , supported by Bros . Dr . G . A . Walker Arnott , S . P . G . M . ; James Miller , P . G . T . ; Donald Campbell , P . G . Sec . ; John Deuchar , of Morningside , Gr . B . B . ; Captain Barbour , Gth Dragoon Guards ; T . J . Rochead ; Councillor Taylor ; John M . Rowan ; J . G . Houston . Cruikshank , of St . John ' s , acted as S . W . ; and Sutherland , of St . Mungo ' s , as J . W .
