He would rather , for the benefit more especially of the newly-initiated Brethren , observe that , fk > m the days at least of Shem to that hour , wherever enlightenment has existed , it had been found amongst Masons , and that from this venerable Order had ever arisen those men whose office and pleasure it was to dispel ignorance and darkness , and to promote peace , good-will , and progress , amongst men . In the volume of the Sacred Law were to be found many forcible and beautiful

illustrations of this truth , to the full propriety and power of which initiation in the mysteries of Freemasonry afforded the only key ; and whether the Old or New Testament be the charter of the Mason ' s faith , he would find that , to understand the full depths of its meaning , he had ( provided he pursued those studies to which Masons professed to devote themselves ) helps in Masonry from which the outer world was debarred . The Bev . Bro . concluded , by wishing the W . M . and Brethren , individually and collectively , many happy returns of the new year .

The W . M . could not let the opportunity pass wichout proposing the " Masonic Press and Bro . Warren , " who briefly acknowledged the compliment . Amongst the visitors were Bros . Harrison , W . M ., No . 202 ; Solomon , W . M ., No . 108 ; Hammett , P . M ., No . 752 ; Carpenter , P . M ., No .- 219 ; Kelly , W . M ., No . 211 ; Gurton , W . M . elect , No . 211 ; Blackburn , No . 169 ; Lowick , No . 15 . Bro . Taylor presided at the piano , and the Misses Taylor , Bro . Lowick , Bro . Crew , & c , contributed , by their very excellent singing , to the evening ' s entertainment .

The Annual Ball of this Lodge took place at the Hanover Booms nn the 17 th ult ., and was attended by a very numerous and elegant company—the Officers of the Lodge and many of the visitors appearing in their collars and jewels . At 12 o ' clock the Supper-rooms were thrown open , when upwards of 360 ladies and gentlemen partook of a very elegant supper , supplied by Mr . Withers , the wines being supplied by Bro . Arnell . Bro . G . P . Taylor ' s band , conducted by Mr . Bradley , gave great satisfaction ; and Bro . Frampton , being the M . C .,

contributed materially to the delight of all . The Board of Stewards , consisting of Bros . Kennedy , G . M . Gurton , Booth , Jackson , G . Watson , Jeffries , Underwood , & c , with Bro . Nicholson as the Pres ., and Bro . Ernmens Hon . Sec , carried out all the arrangements for the reception of so large an assembly to perfection ; and although the expenditure incurred was about £ 150 , we are happy to add there will be a considerable surplus , which , as usual with this Lodge , will be devoted to Masonic charity .

Manchester Lodge ( No . 209 ) . —The annual festival of installation of this now prosperous Lodge took place at the Gun Tavern , Pimlico , on the 17 th January , when Bro . R . Coliard was most ably installed W . M . for the ensuing year , and was pleased to appoint the following Brethren as his officers , viz ., M . Levinson , S . W . ; H . Norman , J . W . ; Pitcher , S . D . ; Kice , J . D . ; Hunt , I . G . The

new W . M . then initiated two gentlemen into Freemasonry , and the other business of the Lodge having been completed , the Brethren adjourned to a most splendid dinner , which reflected great credit upon Bro . Backstraw . The Lodge was honoured with several visitors , amongst whom we noticed Bros . J . Levinson , No . 7 ; Beal , No . 7 ; Goring , No . 25 ; Potter , No . 11 ; Couchman , No . 165 ; Archer ( St . Thomas ) , & c . & c .

St . James ' s Union ( No . 211 ) . —This excellent working and most prosperous Lodge held its first meeting for the season on Tuesday , January 8 , in consequence of its having outgrown the accommodation afforded by the Westmorland Arms , where it has hitherto held its assemblies . Bro . Kelly , the W . M . for the past year , having raised a Brother to the 3 rd Degree , proceeded to instal as his

successor Bro . John Gurton , and rarely have we heard the ceremony so impressively performed . After the appointment of his officers , Bro . Gurton initiated a candidate into the Order , and proved that the mantle of his r > redece , ssor had worthily fallen on his shoulders . At the conclusion of the Masonic business the Brethren adjourned to a very elegant banquet , and a most harmonious and delightful evening was spent by the Brethren , amongst whom were several visitors . Universal Lodge ( No . 212 ) . —At the meeting of this Lodge on the 25 th January , Bro . Thos . Green was installed W . M ., by Bro . Algernon Attwood- P . M .
