Summary Of News For March.

THE AA AR .

In the early part of the month , the death of the Emperor of Russia , gave rise to hopes of peace , which have since been nearly dissipated , by the Manifestoes of the new Emperor . In the mean time every thing appears to be mending in the Crimea , the works are being pushed steadily on ; the health of the men is improving , and the Allied Armies are said to be ready to act on the offensive . There have been some skirmishes between the French and Russians , Avithout any great adA'antage to either side . The negociations have been opened at Viennaand the two first articles of the

pro-, tocol for peace agreed to ; but the Morning Post informs us , that on the third , which stipulates for the entrance of Turkey into the European family , and for the limitation of the preponderance of Russia in the Black Sea , a difficulty has been started on the part of the representatives of Russia , wluch renders it necessary for the plenipotentiaries to communicate Avith their respective Governments . A large portion of the Baltic Fleet has already sailed .

BENEVOLENT . The Anniversary Festival of the Royal Medical College ( to provide for decayed Medical men or their widows , and afford education to their children , was celebrated at the London Tavern on the 29 th Feb ., and subscriptions amounting to nearly 2200 / . announced . The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths , have presented a donation of 1001 . to that excellent Charity—the Royal St . Anns Asylum .

The City of London Hospital for diseases of the chest , had a dinner at the London Tavern on the 7 th , when subscriptions to the amount of 3700 / . were announced . The Hospital is in Avant of further aid , to enable the Governors to complete the building in Victoria Park , which is now nearly ready for opening . On the same day , the Central Association in aid of Soldiers wives and Avidows , held their first annual meeting , the Duke of Cambridge presiding . Br . the Hon . Major PoAvys read the report , from which it resulted that the total amount received , up to the

7 th inst .. Avas 104 , 853 / . 7 s . lOf / ., of which 34 , 643 / . 1 * . 9 f / . had been spent in relief , and 5 , 812 / . 18 s . Id . in advertisements , printing , & c , leaving a balance in Exchequer bills , and at the bankers , of 64 , 379 / . 8 s . Resolutions in support of the Charity were passed . A Committee has been appointed to inquire into the position and management of the Literary Fund . The Seamans Hospital Anniversary Festival was celebrated on the 28 th , with Lord Palmerston in the chair , when a subscription list of nearly 2000 / . was obtained . ) j $ ? The Engineer's Masonic , & c , Life Assurance Society held its annual meeting on the 6 th , when a report was presented Avhich stated that the total number of proposals received by the directors during the past year has been 207 ; the annual premiums derivable from which would have amounted to 2 , 343 / . 3 s .. assuring the sum of 62 , 640 / . ; of these , 154 , producing an annual income of 1 , 761 / . 19 s . llf / ., and assuring a sum of 45 , 840 / ., have been completed . The claims from death during the

past year have amounted to 3 , 750 / : these claims have accrued upon the death of 18 members , which is beloAV the average calculated mortality . On the 7 th the Palladium Assurance Company held its 13 th annual meeting . The report said the new premiums received in 1854 were nearly 33 per cent greater than those received in 1853 ; the amount assured was nearly 5 per cent greater ; and the number of policies in force about 34- per cent greater ; and the surplus balance larger than that of the previous year by 23 , 207 / . lis . 2 d . On the other hand , the amount paid as claims Avas less in 1854 than in 1853 by 55-i- per cent . The policies issued during the year numbered 153 , assuring 150 , 920 / ., and yielding new premiums to the amount of 5 , 524 / . 5 s . lid . The report Avas adopted .

THE AA AR .
