The Province of Oxfordshire .

AS a Province , Oxfordshire is not much more than one hundred years old , but Masonically speaking , the County dates back to 1729 , for a Lodge was chartered in the City in that year , and constituted accordingly on 8 th August ; the Grand Master being Lord Kingston . The brethren assembled at the " Crown , " in the Corn Market , but they did not attend to their duties for long , as the Lodge was erased as No . 5 8 in 1736 .

The next of the ( extinct ) Lodges which was opened in the County was formed at the " White Lion , " High Street , Banbury , on the 31 st March , 1740 , by permission of Ihe Marquess of Carnarvon , Grand Master . It was during his

Lordship ' s rule that the charge of half-a-crown was fixed " for every lodge on removing from one house to another , " payable to the Engraver of the List ; so that the members had that sum to pay on removing in the following year to the " Three Lions " or " Oxford Arms . " The warrant to Constitute was paid for on 23 rd July , 1740 . There are no Records extant , unfortunately . Its erasure occurred in 1768 as No . 114 , its previous position being 1 S 1 on the Roll .

There were then 110 Lodges in the Province , but in the following year the " Lodge of Alfred in the University of Oxford , " was warranted on 2 nd December as No . 455 , to meet at the " King's Head , " in the Corn Market , and was
