of the Upton Chapter . It was twenty years since he had taken part in such a ceremony , Avhen he had acted as Director of Ceremonies . He knew Avhat an excellent Mason their M . E . Z . was , and that their other Principals were loved and respected by all . He Avas therefore sure that the Upton Chapter would prosper , as it had within it all the elements of

success . The M . E . Z ., proposing the toast of " The Consecrating Officers , " said they had that night had an excellent rendering of a most beautiful ceremony . They had listened to an eloquent oration , one point of Avhicli was worth noting ,

" What was worth doing at all Avas worth doing Avell . " He could promise the Consecrating Officers that , the founders would bear that in mind and endeavour to do them credit . The Rev . Canon Brownrigg , replying , thanked the M . E . Z . on behalf of the Consecrating Officers . It had been a pleasure

to them to consecrate another chapter in the Metropolis , the centre of civilization . They hoped to visit later on to see how the chapter Avas doing . He could IIOAV prophesy a successful career . Comp . Frank Richardson proposed the toast of " The

Principals , " and congratulated the companions on the material of which it Avas composed , and predicted a certain success for the chapter . The M . E . Z ., replying , said the companions had asked his advice with regard to founding a chapter , and he had placed his services at their disposal . They had asked him to become

their First Principal , and he Avould devote his best interests and abilities to the wellbeing of the chapter . Comp . W . R . Barr , P . Z ., H ., and Comp . the Rev . J . Beeby , J ., also replied . The M . E . Z . proposed the toast of "The Visitors , " of whom there were twenty-eight , and hoped they would come

and see the work of the chapter at a later date . The toast Avas responded to by Comps . Songhurst and Hennings . In proposing the toast of "The Officers , " the M . E . Z . said that the Principals Avere both grateful to and proud of their officers , particularly Comp . Stocks , Scribe E ., and Comp .

Gairdner , Treasurer , both of whom had been unceasing in their labours to build up and start the chapter successfully , . and the success of those labours were evident that evening . He was sure also that all the other ollicers would do their best to assist the Principals in making the chapter a success .

The toast AV . IS responded to by Comps . Gairdner , Treasurer ; H . Stocks , Scribe E . ; W . J . Carroll , P . S . ; and A . B . Noble . The Janitor ' s toast brought the evening to a close . Great credit is due to Comp . Stocks for all the

arrangements of the consecration , and it is noteworthy that he and his friend , Comp . Gairdner , appear to run in double harness . They were both initiated in Lodge No . 1351 , were exalted together in Chapter No . 862 , were joining members together of Chapter No . 1929 , and now have become founders . Scribe E ., and Treasurer respectively of the Upton Chapter .

THE Provincial Grand Lodge of Norfolk held its annual meeting at Diss on the 18 th June , Avhen a large number of brethren attended from all parts of the province . The Provincial Grand Master , Bro . Hamon le Strange , presided , supported by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , Bro . Harry James Sparks , and other Provincial Grand Officers .

Provincial Grand Lodge having been opened , the roll Avas called , when it appeared that every lodge Avas represented at the meeting . The minutes of the Provincial Grand Lodge which Avas held at Norwich on the 10 th July , 1 9 , were read and confirmed , and the Provincial Grand Registrar , Bro . A . H .

Bateman , read a return of the status of the lodges in the province for the past year , Avhich proved to be satisfactory . In the absence of the Provincial Grand Treasurer , Bro . T . J . Mackley , the Provincial Grand Secretary read the balancesheet of the province for the year , from which it appeared

that there remained in hand a considerable balance to the credit of the province , and the same having been put to the lodge , ' was adopted . The report and recommendations of the Board of General Purposes Avere read by the Provincial Grand Secretary . This

included recommendations tlvat . £ 10 should be voted to the widows of two deceased brethren ' ; that ten guineas each be voted to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , and that for Girls ; a donation of eleven guineas to the Provincial Charitable Association and Educational and Benevolent Fund ; and a subscription for the purpose of securing , through

the neAV Charitable Fund of the province , a life-governorship in one of the Central Charities of the Order . With respect to the provincial Charities , it Avas recommended also that the initial expenses of its formation should be defrayed from the balance in the Treasurer ' s hands . The report stated that in

consequence of the removal of the Provincial Honorary Librarian ( Bro . W . H . Jones ) from Norwich , and the inaccessibility of the books in the library at No . 47 , St . Giles ' Street , Norwich , in his absence , he had tendered his resignation , but the Board recommended that Bro . Jones be

re-elected jointly with Bro . G . A . H . Harrison , of Norwich , as Honorary Librarians . On the motion of the Deputy Provincial Grand Master , the several recommendations were unanimously agreed to . Bearing upon the report of the Board of General Purposes , Bro . C E . Ward moved : " That this Provincial

Grand Lodge invites lodges and brethren in the province to support the Charitable Association and Educational and Benevolent Fund , and proceeds to elect four brethren willing to act as Provincial Charity SteAvards , to visit each lodge and chapter in the province , to appeal on behalf of the

Association and Fund , and report result to next Provincial Grand Lodge . " After considerable discussion respecting the details of administration of the Provincial Charity Funds , the motion AYas adopted , and Bro . W . H . Jones was appointed to visit

the lodges at Yarmouth , Harleston , Cromer , and North Walsham ; Bro . B . P . P . Barwell , the Norwich lodges ; Bro . Ward in the Lynn district ; and Bro . the Rev . Lawson those in the South . The report of the Charities Committee , read by the

Honorary Secretary , Bro . B . P . P . Barwell , Avas of a gratifying character . It recorded the success which had attended several candidates from the province , and on the motion of the Provincial Grand Master , the report Avas unanimously adopted , with a warm expression of thanks to Bro . Barwell for the great energy which he had displayed in promoting the interests of the province .

The lodge then proceeded to the election of Provincial Grand Treasurer , and there being only one candidate nominated , Bro . James Brown , of Philanthropic Lodge , Lynn , he Avas declared to be duly elected . The Provincial Grand Master then proceeded to appoint and invest his Provincial Grand Officers , after which the

brethren proceeded to the parish church for Divine Service , when the Rev . Austin le Strange , M . A ., preached an appropriate sermon . The brethren afterwards dined together , after which the loyal and Masonic toasts Avere enthusiastically honoured .
