minutes of the last Preceptory having been read and confirmed and ajiologies from absentees received , the next business was the election of the E . P ., which resulted in

Knight Sidny Spark Milledge being unanimously elected . Comji . fosejih Old was obligated as Serving Brother or Guard , and invested with the Russet Gown and Insignia of Office . A vote of ten guineas was made to the R . M . I , for Boys , -and , at the invitation of the E . P ., the members dined

together , and a very pleasant evening was sjient . It is hoped an emergency meeting will be held during the jiresent month for the installation of one or two new members , jirior to the installation of the new E . P ., which takes jilace the third Thursday in February , when the Officers will also be ajijiointed .

Apropos of the public emotion regarding the Nelson relics , and of the centenary celebration at Washington , it may be mentioned that a Masonic lodge , associated with the old 46 th Regiment ( Duke of Cornwall ' s Light Infantry ) , jiossesses the identical volume of the Sacred Law on which

George Washington was sworn when he joined the Masonic Fraternity . It is nec'dless to say that this volume is treasured as a j *> recious relic . —Daily Telegraph .

The history of the introduction of champagne is not , like that of the intrepid individual who swallowed the lirst oyster , lost in obscurity , although it is of considerable antiquity . When we refer to chamjiagne , it goes without saying that we mean the sjiarkling beverage which in these days all the

world consumes . Dom Perignau is credited with the discovery of imjiarting to chamjiagne its sjiarkling character , and living at the same time at the Abbey of Hautviller was Dom Ruinart , the jirevious discovery of the Luther Monk was made known to him , and he transmitted it before his death to his nejihew , Nicholas Ruinart , the founder of

the famous house which for nearly two centuries has handed on the business in direct succession from father to son , each in his turn zealously guarding the interests and high name of the house . The representatives of the lirm in London are Messrs . Macmin , Richardson & Co ., if , Hart Street , Mark Lane , E . C .
