His Royal Hig hness then drove off , under the escort of the Brighton Troop of the Middlesex Yeomanry ( Duke of Cambridge ' s own Hussars ) and amid the enthusiastic cheers of the good people of Horsham and their visitors , to the new School , where a spacious marquee , capable of accommodating some 2000 people , had been erected , in which the ceremony of the day was appointed to take place . " Your Royal Hig hness and Gentlemen : It is a great pleasure to me to be present as the representative of her Majesty to receive your loyal address and inaugurate the new schools of Christ ' s Hospital . Her Majesty is deeply interested in every foundation within her realm which has for its object the Christian education of the young , and Christ ' s Hospital , which was founded by one of her predecessors , and of which the Oueen and all her three sons
are governors—your Royal Highness is its president—has special claims on her affection . ( Cheers . ) The expansion ot the ancient foundation under the new scheme , of which the institution commenced to-day is one of its chief fruits , has engaged her Majesty ' s thoughts and will always be attended with her liveliest good wishes . 1 cannot bul believe that the transfer of the boarding school from the venerable but somewhat confined building in the Citv lo this spacious and beautiful country site will have the best possible
effect on the health , well-being and progress of the scholars . ( Cheers . ) And I trust that the tradition of the old school will be continued , and that it will nourish in its new surroundings , and that young men will be trained within these walls who will rival the many whose fame in learning , piety , or action is among the most precious possessions of the hospital . 1 thank your Royal Highness for the welcome you have given , and I shall gladly lay your expressions of loyalty and affection before her Majesty . The Grand Master then moved to his position by the stone , and the upper stone having been raised , and the lower adjusted , his ROVAL HIGHNESS delivered the address customary on such occasions , and the GRAND CHAPLAIN having delivered up a prayer , the ACTING GRAND SECRETARY read the following inscription on the plate : " This stone was laid on behalf of rer Most Gracious Majesty Oueen Victoria , with full Masonic ceremonial ,
by H . R . H . Albert Edward , Prince of VVales , K . G ., Most Worshi pful Grand Master of ihe United Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of England , on the 2 , vd day of October , 1897 , being the anniversary of the biith of his Majesty King Edward VI ., by whom was founded in the City of London , A . D . 1553 . the religious , Royal , and ancient foundation of Christ ' s Hospital . " The Giand Treasurer having deposited the phial containing the coins , and the Acting Grand Secretary having placed the plate upon
the lower stone , the Grand Master spread the cement upon the upper face of the stone , and proved it . The upper stone was then lowered into position , and his Royal Highness having proved i : with the plumb , level , and square , successively handed to him by the Junior Grind Warden , the Senior Grand Waiden , and the Deputy Grand Master , gave the stone the usual three knocks with the mallet handed to him for the purpose , and strewed the corn , and poured the wine and oil thereon .
The architects were then presented to his Royal Highness , and delivered to him the plan of ihe building , which the Prince inspected and returned to them together with the tools us : d in proving the stone , and Bro . the Rev . The trowel used by his Royal Highness is the identical trowel with which
the first stone of the Great Hall in Newgate-street was laid and has on it the following inscription : "With this Trowel His Royal Highness Frederick Duke of York , representing His Most Gracious Majesty King George the Fourth , laid the First Stone of the New Hall of the Royal and Ancient Foundation of Christ ' s Hospital , on the 28 th day of April , in the year of our Lord , 1825 . " To this has now been added the following :
" With this same Trowel His Royal Highness Albert Edward Prince of Wales , representing Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria , laid the First Stone of the New Schools of Christ ' s Hospital at Horsham , on the 23 rd day of October , 1897 . "

George Frederick Busbridge as Z ., Frederick William Robinson as H ., Bertrand Grant as J ., and 20 others for a chapter to be attached to the Papyrus Lodge , No . 2562 , to be called the Papyrus Chapter , and to meet at Freemasons' Hall , London . The foregoing petitions being regular the Committee recommend that the prayers thereof be respectively granted .
The Committee have likewise received memorials , with extracts of minutes , for permission to remove the following chapters : The Lewis Chapter , No . 1185 , London , from the King ' s Arms Hotel , VVood Green , to the Holborn Restaurant , W . C . The Studholme Brownrigg Chapter , No . 2421 , from the British Schools to the Station Hotel , Amersham .
The Lome Chapter , No . 1347 , Sutton , from the Greyhound Hotel , to the Masonic Hall , The Chapter of Felicity , No . 58 , London , from the Ship and Turtle Tavern , Leadenhall-street , to the Grafton Rooms , Beak-street , W . The Committee being satisfied of the reasonableness of the requests , recommend that the removal of these chapters be sanctioned .
The Committee have also received a memorial from the Joyce Chapter , No . 942 , Port Chalmers , NewZealand , asking for permission to change the name from the Joyce Chapter to the Port Chalmers Marine Chapter , and the Committee recommend that the prayer thereof be granted .

D . of C . announced that the Provincial Grand Master of Essex , Bro . the Rig ht Hon . the Earl of Warwick , and the Prov . G . M . of Oxfordshire , Bro . the Earl of Jersey , were present , and he called upon the brethren to salute them .
