has filled the office of Deputy of that Province , and whose services in that capacity were so kindly recognised by the brethren at the annual meeting of Prov . Grand Lodge at Brentwood , on Tucsdav , the 26 th instant . In the remaining case
it is Bro . the Rev . J . S . BROWNRIGG , Past G . Chaplain , who has served as Dep . Prov . G . Master firstly of Berks and Bucks , and latterly of Bucks onl y , since the year iSyr , and who has now resigned a position , the duties and responsibilities of which are
somewhat exacting . Our Rev . brother has been for a long time past one of the most prominent figures in Masonry in the Metropolis and the counties adjoining . There is hardl y a new
lodge hereabouts at the inauguration of which the Rev . Bro . BROWNRIGG has not assisted as Chaplain , and the brief , but admirable orations on the nature and princi p les of Freemasonry which he has delivered on these numerous occasions would fill a
moderate-sized , and we venture to add—though there is little reason to do so—a most valuable and instructive volume . Our respected brother appears to have come to the conclusion that he has discharged the duties of a Deputy Prov . Grand
Master for a sufficiently long term of years , and that having done so under three Provincial Grand Masters , the late Bro . Sir DANIEL GOOCII , Bart ., Bro . Earl CARRINGTON , and his successor , Bro . Lord ADDINGTON , he is entitled to a
little rest , and all the more so , perhaps , from his work in Masonry having b y no means been restricted to the official labours of a Deputy with those of Consecrating Chaplain superadded for the sake of variety . Bro . BROWNRIGG has been
Prov . Grand Mark Master of Buckinghamshire since 1882 and Grand Superintendent of Royal Arch Masonry in the same county since 1 S 91 . At the same time he is Grand Prior in the Supreme Council , 33 ° , of the Ancient and Accepted Rite , as well as a Kniirht Grand Cross and Past Grand Prelate of the
Order of the Temple , and it is to be hoped that for many years to tome we shall have the opportunity of greeting him in some , if not in all , of these exalted offices . As regards the post he has just resigned , it must have given him the greatest pleasure
10 receive , at the hands of the Prov . G . M ., the address and other evidences of the kindl y feelings entertained towards him by the brethren of the Province , which it devolved on Lord ADDINGTON to present to him on their behalf . There can be no question
that the presentation meant , as Bro . BROWNRIGG himself interpreted it to mean , " the personal friendship and the personal affection which his work in Masonry had brought him from every one present then- that day , " and not onl y from cverv one
present , but likewise from those who from various causes were unable to attend the meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge , and personall y assist at this most gratif ying incident in the

Plate 3 represents a clearance certificate granted by No . 91 , and dated 5 th January , 1 790 , with a tiny seal attached . A swarm from the lodge petitioned the " Moderns , " or regular Grand Lodge , for a charter , in consequence of which St . Some curious correspondence followed as to the custody ol the warrant of No . 91 , it having got into the " hands of the enemy ; " but eventually the "Ancients" secured their rightful property , and set to work again . Valuable information is afforded as to No . 18 , held in the 17 th Regiment , which has long been a puzzle . It will be news to many that in 1796 Bro . Leslie , Grand Secretary of the " Ancients , " wrote stating there was no objection to
a member of their organisation belonging " to any other Society " [ meaning the " Modems " ] , so long as he conducted himself properly . Of the other plates , mention should be made of the one devoted to a Royal Arch certificate of 1 S 01 , and others relating to seals of the lodge , Royal Arch , Atk Mariners , K .
