" The Worshipful Master , in reply , said that notwithstanding the kind remarks of the I . P . M ., he was by no means pleased with the manner in which he ( the W . M . )

GREENWICH . —Borough of Greenwich Lodge ( No . 332 ) . —We should have thought that a lodge of the above order of Masonry could not hane been better placed than in the " Royal Borough , " where Craft Masonry flourishes like a green tree ; but , for some cause or other , Mark Masonry does not seem to catch on at-present , for , although the above lodge has been in existence for the
past five years , at present it is not much , if any , stronger in numbers than the day it was consecrated . It is splendidly located , has a suite of rooms elegantly appointed and furnished , while , so far as the catering is concerned , we have only to mention the name of the worthy host , Bro . George Burney , to convince our readers of the safety of that department from any lapses—but now to business .
The installation meeting took place at the King William the Fourth Hotel on the 26 th inst . Bro . F . Couldery , W . M ., having opened the lodge , and the minutes of the previous meeting having been confirmed , Bro . Ralph Gooding , M . D ., P . M . Bon Accord and P . J . G . O . Eng ., assumed the chair as Installing Officer . Bro . W . C . S . Burney , M . D ., S . W . and W . M . elect , was then presented
to Bro . Gooding , to receive at his hands the benefit of installation , and in due course that brother was placed in the chair of A ., and saluted according to ancient custom . He appointed his officers as follows : Bros . F . Couldery , l . P . M . ; W . T . Hunt , S . W . ; W . H . Burnev , J . W . ; J . G . Thomas , M . O . ; S . J . Gore , S . O . ; G . P . Carter , J . O . and Sec ; A . H . Satch , Treas . ; J . Tuck , R . M . ; E ! VV .
Carpenter , S . D . ; T . Newton , J . D . ; C . Kedgley , I . G . ; and Ii . Spinks , Tyler . Bro . Gooding then delivered the addresses with masterly eloquence , and so concluded a ceremony that was well designated " a real Masonic treat , " for which he was accorded a cordial vote of thanks , the same to be inscribed on the minutes of the lodge . Bro . Gooding , in response , said he thanked them very
much for the high honour done him in according him so hearty a vote of thanks . So far as the office of Installing Officer went , he looked upon it-as a duty , . a pleasure , and a privilege . At any time that he could do anything for , or be of service to the lodge , they might always depend upon him to do it . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren sat down to a superb banquet , " quite Burney , you know , " in its
admirable style and service . Among the other brethren present , either at lodge or at the banquet , were Bros . W . Kipps , P . M . and P . J . G . O . Kent ; H . Roberts , P . M . and P . P . G- Supt . of Works Kent ; H . Partridge , P . M . ; T . Ovenden , S . W . 226 and P . J . G . D . Kent ; and H . Burney , all of the lodge ; Capt . Eugene Sweney , P . M . 44 and P . P . J . G . W . Kent ; A . H . Bateman , P . M . 309 and P . P . G . M . O . Kent ; and C Jolly , S . O . 226 and P . P . G . O . Kent .
The toast of "The Queen and Mark Masonry " having been drunk , that of ' •H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , the M . W . G . M . M ., the D . G . M . M ., and Grand Officers , Present and Past , " followed ; and , in response , Bro . Gooding said it was his frequent duty to respond for the Grand Officers of England , not only in this , but in the Craft degree , and to be entitled to do so he
esteemed it a great pleasure , and a great privilege . He well remembered , when it was first mooted that there should be a Mark lodge in that great borough of Greenwich , the extreme pleasure it afforded him when he was requested to assume the position of its first Master , a pleasure and an honour that he should never forget , and for which he should ever return them his sincere thanks .
With regard to the Grand Officers of the Grand Mark Lodge of England , as they knew , those officers were selected by their Royal Grand Master , and always with the greatest care , from among those of the Degree who had borne the heat and burden of the day ; who had given alms in the cause of Charity ; who had worked well the ritual , and who had honoured , and were still honouring ,
the cause of Mark Masonry all over the world . Therefore , those who were honoured with the broad purple took it , and looked upon it as a great compliment , and whenever the compliment was paid them , as it had so heartily been paid that night , they always felt pleased and proud to acknowledge it with thanks . They of the borough of Greenwich had a very pretty little lodge , but he must
confess that he should have liked to have seen more members present , and trusted . that at their next meeting their W . M . would have the opportunity of introducing new blood into its ranks , so as to keep up the esprit de corps so essential to the welfare and stability of every lodge . As they were well aware , when he was selected as the first Master of that lodge , he was in the same year selected to receive the
broad purple of the G . M . M . Lodge of England , and it was necessary , if any of them aspired to the same honour , that they should put their shoulder to the wheel , not only for the honour of the province , but as he trusted , so as in time to achieve the broad purple at the hands of their Royal Grand Master or his Deputy . He trusted their W . M . would have a successful year of office , and a
healthy one , and thus not only be an honour to the Province of Kent , but to the Grand Lodge of England and Wales , and the Colonies and Dependencies of the British Crown . Bro . Sweney responded for "The R . W . P . G . M . M ., the D . P . G . M . M ., and the rest of the P . G . Officers , Present and Past , " and said he thanked them for placing his name
at the head of the . list of those with whom the toast was coupled , because it gave him an opportunity and the privilege of witnessing the splendid working of Bro . Gooding , which was assuredly , and indeed a truly Masonic and intellectual treat . He was present at the consecration of the lodge , and was sorry that their esteemed P . G . Master was unable to be with them that night , especially
Mark Masonry.
as he was an old and respected ally of his ( Bro . Sweney ' s ) family , as was also their equally esteemed D . P . G . M . M . Bro . the Rev . Hayman Cummings . He and he felt sure every present and past Grand Officer were proud of the progress the Order had made , and was making , in the Province of Kent , and trusted their lodge would go on and prosper .
Bro . Kipps spoke of their P . G . M . M . as one who did not believe in ornamental Masonry , but in hard work . Their lodge had been honoured with the purple no less than four times , he himself having received a step twice . He trusted the brethren would rally round the W . M . and make the lodge worthy some day of receiving , as Bro . Gooding had said , the broad purple of the G . M . Lodge .
Bro . Couldery then proposed the toast of the W . M ., and in so doing caused a rare laugh by saying that he was impelled to speak warmly in the praise of Bro . Burney btcause they were both " professors of anatomy , " and if their W . M . only followed in the footsteps of his predecessors the lodge would have no cause of complaint . Bro . Burney , in response , thanked them for their hearty
reception of the toast . It would be his bounden duty to make the Borough of Greenwich Lodge a success , and try and induce all good Masons to join it . They wanted more members , and as thc lodge was situated in the midst of the borough of Greenwich , so it ought to be the strongest in the Province of Kent . He did hope soon to have at least some 50 or Co members on its roll . He then presented
Bro . Couldery with a handsome P . M . M . jewel as a mark of the esteem of the brethren , and for services rendered the lodge during the past year , and trusted Bro . Couldery would live long to wear it with pride and satisfaction . Bro . Couldery , in returning thanks for the Past Masters , assured them that , while he prized their gift , it would never be so much prized as some other jewels in his
possession , because he had worked hard for them , but had had no work to do to earn that . His Masonic life commenced some 20 years ago , and he did not think that anyone could say a word against him behind his back , for he never was envious or jealous of anyone's success , but always applauded and helped on a good and worthy brother to higher honours than he himself held . For himself , he
cordially thanked them for the toast . Bro . Roberts having also responded , the toast of "The Visitors " was responded to by Bro . Jolly . The " Officers " and Tyler's toasts completed the business and pleasure of the evening . Bro . Kipps presided at the piano , and the singing and reciting were good , especially that of Bro . Gore in "The Lifeboat , " from the " Dagonet Ballads . "

Bro . Briggs responded in a neat little speech on behalf of "The Grand Mark Officers . " Bros . Walls and Fisher for "The Provincial Grand Officers . " Bro . Kohler proposed the toast of "The W . M . " The Worshipful Master , in reply , said that notwithstanding the kind remarks of the I . P . M ., he was by no means pleased with the manner in which he ( the W . M . )
had done the work . It was his first effort , and he hoped to carry out the working far better before he reached the chair in 1 S 90 . Bro . Conway replied to the toast of " The Advancee . " Bro . Kohler for " The Past Masters ; " Bros . Fisher and Walls for " The Treasurer and Sccrerary ; " and Bros . Porter and Bonney for " The Officers . " Bros . Porter , Bailey , and others , instrumentally and vocally entertained the brethren .
