After opening his lodge , reading and confirmation of the minutes , the W . AL . ose and said , brethren , before we proceed further with the business of the eveninir , I ask your indulgence for a short time whilst I refer briefly to the sad event which has cast a gloom over the whole nation . It

has pleased the God of Nations to remove from our midst one whom we all looked forward to as the probable head of the State and the Empire . We as Freemasons especially grieve for the young life thus cast off , and on the eve of that which promised so much happiness , and we deeply sympathise with our beloved M . W . G . M . his Royal father , H . R . H . the Princess of Wales , and all the members of the Royal Family , and it is my sad duty to ask you brethren in

solemn silence to be upstanding whilst I read the following resolution : The W . AL , officers and brethren of the "South Saxon" Lodge , No . 311 , meeting at the Freemasons' Hall , Lewes , on 20 th January , 1 S 92 , desire most respectfully to express their sympathy with the Alost Worshipful Grand Master of England , H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , H . R . H . the Princess of Wales , and all the members of the Royal House in their great sorrow at

the lamented death of their eldest son H . R . H . the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , and pray that Almighty God may graciously vouchsafe every needed consolaton . AL A Board of Installed Alasters being formed , the Installing Alaster , Bro . VV . Wright , placed Bro . VV . Stone in the chair of K . S , and after salutation , he

AL , Wardens , and brethren were given by the retiring VV . AI ., who at once proceeded to say : I have now a very sad duty to

perform , namely , to move a resolution of condolence with the family of our late beloved Grand Secretary , Bro . Col . Shadwell H . Clerke . If I may be permitted to refer to that which 1 conceive was the dominant feature in our late brother's character , 1 should say it was duty . From the time when as a young officer of 18 he climbed the heights of Alma , and in the face of a fierce foe planted the colours of his regiment on the top , to that wretched Tuesday when ,

although very ill , amidst the cimmerian darkness of a London fog such as has seldom been witnessed , he nude his way to his ollice in Great Queen-street , which he left only to return to his residence and die—this characteristic prevailed . Brethren , his loss seems almost irreparable , and will be more felt as time progresses . Every English Freemason , aye , every Freemason the world over is a loser by his death , for his sympathies were cosmopolitan .

In silence , brethren , and upstanding whilst I read the resolution . The W . AL , officers , and brethren of the South Saxon Lodge , No . 311 , meeting at the Freemasons' Hall , Lewes , on 211 th January , iSj 2 , beg to offer their sincere condolence with Mrs . Shadwell H . Clerke and family in the sad bereavement they have been called to sustain in the death of Col . Shadwell H . Clerke , Grand Secretary oi United Grand Lodge of Freemasons of England , and pray

that the Great Architect of the Universe may be pleased to comfort and sustain them in their sad affliction . 'The W . AL then , in very happy and eulogistic terms , presented the I . P . AL with a handsome Past Master ' s jewel , unanimously voted to him by the lodge , as a mark ot the esteem of the brethren and in recognition of the manner in which he had carried out the duties of his office during the past year . Bro . Wright suitably responded , Bro , J . C . Lucas , P . AL

P . P . G . W ., was unanimously elected Steward to represent the lodge on the Provincial Chatities Committee . The W . M . announced that , in consequence of the limented death of H . R . H . the Duke of Clarence and Avondale , the usual annual installation banquet was postponed until Wednesday , the 17 prox ., and would Ire at the London and Paris Hotel , Ncwhavcn . Several candidates for initiation having been proposed , the lodge was closed . 'The jewel was manufactured by Uro . George Kenning .

After the usual preliminary business , Bro . John Ansell Day was then raised to the Sublime Degree of a Alaster Alason by the W . AL A Board of Installed Alasters being formed , the Installing Alaster , Bro . VV . Wright , placed Bro . VV . Stone in the chair of K . S , and after salutation , he

appointed the following as his officers : Bros . W . Wright , Prov . J . G . W ., I . P . AL ; A . Russell , S . W . ; J . H . Bull , J . W . 5 J . Adames , P . M ., P . P . G . D ., Treas . ; J . Peters , Sec ; W . Flint , S . D . ; R . Weston , W . Af . 1303 , J . D . ; G . Lloyd , D . C ; E . G . Hales , LG . ; S . Starnes , Org . ; and H . Hall , Tyler . The addresses to the W .
