Masonic Notes .
Our review of the proceedings of the Craft during the year which is on the point of closing will have made it manifest that the progress we have made in 1894 , if not unexampled , has been very satisfactory , and that everywhere throughout the vast extent of the British Empire Freemasonry has upheld its position .
Hence we are justified in looking forward to at least an equal measure of success during the year on which we shall enter on Tuesday next . At all events , it is our earnest wish that twelve months hence its condition may be as sound and firm as it is now , and
that the maintenance of this state may be accomplished with as little loss as possible to the general body . In every way indeed , and to the brethren individually , as well as collectively , we hope that the year 1895 will be a happy and a prosperous one , and the forerunner of many more years of equal happiness and prosperity .
* # # We understand thc M . W . Grand Master , having regard to the great increase in thc number of lodges in the South African Republic , has been pleased to constitute the Transvaal a Dblrict for Masonic purposes , and has appointed as first District Grand Master , Bro . George Richards , P . M . of the Richard Giddy
Lodge , No . 1574 , Kimberley , and P . Z . of the Richard Giddy Royal Arch Chapter . Bro . Richards , who resides at Johannesburg , also holds high rank in the Ancient and Accepted Rite , in Mark Masonry , in the Temple , the Royal Order of Scotland , and other branches of Masonry . He occupies a very leading position in the district , where he has resided for upwards oi 30 years , and is much respected .
Masonic Notes.
The inauguration of the Fellowship Lodge , No . 2353 , at the Frascati Restaurant , of which we published a full report last week , was attended with a considerable amount of eclat , while its prospects , if we may judge from the figures which were stated in the speech of Bro . James Stephens , its indefatigable Secretary ,
are more encouraging than is usually the case even with the most promising of new lodges . Its worthy Treasurer entered upon his duties with upwards of . £ 400 to the credit of the lodge , and among the earliest acts of its members was to vote a donation of . £ 26 5 s . to each of the three Masonic Institutions . Generally
a lodge may consider itself extremel y fortunate in emerging from the first year of its existence with a clear balance sheet , but the Fellowship bids fair to have ample fends in hand at all times , not only for its own necessities , but likewise for the demands of Charity .
We congratulate the' members , and more particularly Bro . James Stephens , the originator of the lodge , on having placed their lodge thus early on a sound monetary basis , and we trust the expectations which its friends have formed of its future career , may be fully realised .
The usual Christmas entertainment to the inmates of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution at Croydon will be given on Wednesday next , the 2 nd prox ., when Bro . James Terry , the Secretary , and several members of the Committee of Management , and many friends
and supporters of the Charity will attend , and render willing service in promoting this annual and most agreeable function . The following day an appropriate entertainment will be given to those pupils of the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls who remain at the School during the holidays .
» * * Our attention has been called to an omission from our review of Freemasonry in 1894 , which we regret . Under the head of Masonic Literature we mentioned among other matter that two Lodge Histories had
been published during the year . The number should have been four , the two we overlooked being the Histories of the Fidelity and Philanthropic Lodges , of Leeds , Nos . 289 and 304 respectively . It is the more important to note the omission a . i both these lodges have celebrated the centenary of their constitution .
* - * We have been favoured by Bro . Henry Smith , D . P . G . M . of West Yorkshire , with a neatly got up itinerary of his recent tour in Canada and the great American lakes , whither he journeyed in July last in search of health . That object , we are glad to note , was
fully accomplished , and Bro . Smith , on his return , sat down to record with grateful and pleasant thoughts a simple narrative of his delightful trip . The little brochure is written under the impression that it would not be unwelcome to his very numerous friends , and as one of them , we can say that although there are no
stirring incidents of flood and field , " it is all very agreeable reading , and we can only hope if we should ever have the good fortune to traverse the same ground that our experiences may be as pleasurable as those of the writer . The photograph which forms the frontispiece is a view of thc delightful house and grounds in which Bro . Smith's son-resides , at London , Ontario .
We learn from thc Voice of Masonry that Bro . Colonel John M . Chivington , Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Colorado , died on the 4 th October , and was interred with Masonic honours , the funeral oration being delivered by Bro . H . P . Brownwell , one of the lights of Freemasonry in that jurisdiction . Our
deceased brother > vas elected Grand Master at the inauguration of the Grand Lodge some 34 years ago , and had thus enjoyed the satisfaction of witnessing its progress from the very outset of ^ its career . The same journal records the death of another veteran
brother—Bro . Dwight Byington , Past . Deputy Grand Master , Past Grand High Priest in the Royal Arch , Past Grand Master R . S . and M ., and Past Grand Commander of Kansas . As thc deceased was Grand Recorder of the Grand Commandery at the time of his death , he was buried with Templar honours .
* The Directors of the Pennsylvania Masonic Home , Philadelphia , have appointed New Year ' s Day as a Reception and Donation Day , and have addressed an earnest appeal to the Craft throughout the jurisdiction for additional support . The Home is at present
capable of furnishing accommodation for no more than 41 Aged Brethren , and it is in contemplation to enlarge the premises at an estimated cost of 10 , 000 dollars . This will give room for 42 additional beds , and will suffice for the needs of the Home for some years . We trust the appeal will prove successful .
