» A regular Quarterly Convocation of Supreme Grand Chapter will be held at Freemasons' Hall on Wednesday , the and prox ., at the usual hour , but , as will be seen from the Agenda we publish in another SATURDAY , OCTOBER 29 , 18 9 8 .
' olumn , there is nothing but the usual routine business ' o transact . The number of new chapters for which warrants have been issued since the August convocation is five , namely , two in the Provinces—the Egerton ° f Tatton Chapter , No . 2132 , New Brighton , Cheshire ;
'" id the Ashbury Chapter , No . 1459 , West Gorton , ' -ancashire ( E . D . ); and three Abroad—tbe Campbell Chapter , No . 2656 , Hatton , Ceylon ; the St . George Chapter , No . 1152 , Singapore ; and the Silver River Chapter , No . 2320 , Buenos Ayres .
* » * The Masonic banquet given by the Right Hon . the -ord Mayor of London—Bro . Alderman Davies , M . P ., G . D . of England—at the Mansion House on
Wednesday evening proved a great success . His ' * ° yal Highness , the M . W . Grand Master , being in ee P mourning for the late Queen of Denmarkother of the Princess of Wales—was of necessity

absent . But there was a splendid muster of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , and of other distinguished Masons , and as a dispensation had been granted for the brethren to appear in Masonic clothing , the scene , as may be imagined , was brilliant in the extreme , These Masonic reunions , which from time to time are held at the official residence of the Chief Magistrate
of the City of London , are about the best answer that can be given to those weak-minded people who delight in condemning or sneering at the Society of Freemasons , the members of which would certainly not be received as the honoured guests of our Lord Mayor if they were the dreadful people they are sometimes depicted . * * *
The rulers of the Province of Northumberland appear to have adopted the plan—and a most excellent plan it seems to be—of connecting their Provincial meetings with any event of exceptional importance , such as the consecration of a new lodge or new chapter for which a warrant of constitution
has been granted . If we remember rightly , a year or two back the annual meeting of Prov , Grand Lodge was arranged to be held at Newcastle-upon-Tyne just at the time selected for the consecration of two new lodges ; and on the 5 th inst . the opportunity afforded by the annual convocation of Prov . Grand Chapter
was turned to account with a view to inaugurating a new chapter at North Shields , which is named after the late Comp . Colonel Addison Potter , C . B ., who was Grand Superintendent of Northumberland from 1881 to 1894 . The plan strikes us , as we have said , as
being an excellent one . The consecration of a new Masonic body is necessarily an event of the greatest interest and importance , and the fact of the annual meeting of the Province being associated with it serves to lend additional dignity to the proceedings .
# » The Addison Potter Chapter , thus auspiciously started on its career , makes the nth on the roll of Prov . G . Chapter , and as there are 30 lodges in Northumberland , the proportion of Royal Arch to Craft Masonry is a very fair one . It is , moreover , satisfactory to learn
from the brief address delivered by the Grand Superintendent , Comp . Sir M . White Ridley , Bart ., M . P ., in the course of the Provincial proceedings , that Royal Arch Masonry has steadily progressed during the past year , and that the greatest possible harmony has
prevailed among the constituent chapters of the province . We trust it may always be in the power of the Grand Superintendent to congratulate the companions of Northumberland on being so well and pleasantly established . « * *
As a rule , postponed meetings are not a success—at all events , not such a success as was hoped for originally—but the annual meeting of the Mark Prov . Grand Lodge of Middlesex appears to have lost nothing by having been put off from the dite first assigned to it . We question indeed if it did not prove
to be something more than an ordinary exception to the rule . It is , indeed , more than probable that , as the cause of the postponement was the illness of the Prov . G . M . M ., our respected Bro . Col . A . B . Cook , so the knowledge that he had so far recovered from his illness as to be able to resume his duties may have impelled the members to meet in greater force than usual . Be
this as it may , there is no doubt that the annual meeting on the 14 th instant—which we reported last week —was exceedingly well attended , and that the reception accorded to the Prov . Grand Master was of the most cordial character , while the congratulations he received on his recovery were most kindly . * * *
That he should have been recommended to his Royal Highness the M . W . Grand Mark Master for re-appointment to an ollice he has so greatly adorned was a matter of course . Bro . Col . Cook has rendered many and great services to Mark Masonry in other capacities , but in none has he distinguished himself so
greatly as in that of Prov . G . Mark Master of Middlesex . He has , indeed , been an admirable ruler , capable and unremitting in the discharge of his duties , yet genial and kindly withal . Under his auspices the Mark Degree in the Metropolitan Province has prospered both Masonically and financially , while thanks to his able presidency at last year ' s Festival of
the Mark Benevolent Fund it holds through him the record of being the most successful Chairman's Province at any of the Mark Benevolent Festivals . We hope that many years will elapse ere the association of Bro . Col . Cook with Middlesex Mark Masonry—an association that is equally honourable to the Prov . G . Master and the lodges under his charge—shall be severed .
Masonic Notes.
The Masonic Service which was held at St . Martin ' s Church , Gospel Oak , on Sunday , the 23 rd instant , appears to have been a great success . There was , however , one drawback from the satisfaction of those present on the occasion—Bro . the Bishop of
Marlborough , who was to have preached the sermon was prevented at the last moment b y a sudden attack of illness from fulfilling his engagement . In all other respects the service passed off well . There was a good attendance of the brethren and their friends , and the
arrangements under the direction of Bro . Terry , P . G . S . B ., as Director of Ceremonies , left nothing to be desired . We congratulate the Hampstead Lodge , which was primarily responsible for the Masonic character given to the meeting , on the manner in
which the proceedings were conducted and the vicar and the parishioners generally , on their Church of St . Martin being the richer for the handsome screen and lectern—the gift of the aforesaid Hampstead Lodge , No . 2408—which were dedicated on the occasion .
* * * The selection of Leeds , which is not only one of the chief industrial centres of the West Riding of Yorkshire , but likewise a stronghold ot Freemasonry , to be the head-quarters of the Provincial Grand Lodge is a
particularly happy one , more especially at a time when it happens that the Provincial Grand Master—Bro . the Right Hon . W . L . Jackson—is one of the representatives in Parliament of that city , and his Deputy , Bro-J . C . Malcolm , P . G . D ., one of its most respected
inhabitants . For the present , only the offices of the Prov . G . Secretary and the Library of Prov . G . Lodge will be located there , but it has been resolved to acquire a site on which to erect a Masonic Hall and offices at a cost of . £ 10 , 000 , and the Special Committee
which reported in favour of this scheme , and whose report was accepted almost unanimously at the recent half-yearly meeting at Huddersfield of the Prov . G , Lodge , has been re-appointed to draw up proposals for the utilisation of the site and submit them to a future meeting . It would be too much to expect that all of
our provinces , many of which are small and far from wealthy , should provide a hall and offices for its Prov . G . Lodge , but there has been no difficulty in adopting this plan in the case of the two Lancashires , and we are glad to know that West Yorkshire , which stands third as regards the number of its lodges , has determined to follow such good examples .
# * * It is further gratifying to know , On the authority of Bro . W . C . Lupton , Chairman of the Charity Committee of the Province , that the West Yorkshire Benevolent and Educational Fund , Which was started a year or
two since , is in a flourishing condition . A large amount of support in the shape of donations and subscriptions has been forthcoming , and up to the present no claims have been made upon it . But several such are pending , and Bro . Lupton did well to impress upon the brethren the desirability of continuing that support
Enthusiastic Reception Of The Sirdar, Bro. Sir Herbert H. Kitchener, P.G.W.
ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION OF THE SIRDAR , BRO . SIR HERBERT H . KITCHENER , P . G . W .
When the Sirdar reached Dover an impressive scene was witnessed . The Admiralty Pier was crowded with an enthusiastic throng of spectators , whose deafening cheers resounded again and again , On the parades the people were equally hearty in their
welcome . After greetings had been exchanged , the company adjourned to the Lord Warden Hotel , where Bro . Sir Herbert H . Kitchener , P . G . W ., was entertained at a luncheon by the Mayor and Corporation , and an address of congratulation was presented .
* * » The arrival of the Sirdar in London at seven o ' clock brought thousands of spectators to Victoria Station and the vicinity , and a scene of wild enthusiasm was witnessed . Owing to the want of adequate police
provision much confusion prevailed , and it was with some difficulty that Bro . Sir Herbert H . Kitchener , P . G . W ., effected an exit from the terminus . When he drove off , amid the cheers of the populace , there
was renewed confusion owing to the vastness of the throng , but there was but one sentiment on every hand—that of patriotic welcome to the victorious General .
THE CORPORATION of Kingston-on-Thames propose to confer the Freedom of the borough on the Duke of Cambridge on the occasion of his opening the new Victoria Hospital , the site for which he presented to the town .
